  • The Development of Marxist Thought in the Young Karl Marx Helenhund
DOUGLAS L. BENDELL AWARD THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARXIST THOUGHT IN THE YOUNG KARL MARX HELENHUND Karl Marx was born a contradiction to the world of his time: from a Jewish family, he would become the world's foremost proponent of atheism; from a culture steeped in German romanticism and Hegelian idealist philosophy, he would become the foremost materialist philosopher; from a profligate son and later, profligate husband and father, he would become the economist who spent hours researching the topic of money for the world changing "Das Kapital;" and from this man noted for his culture, intelligence, and arrogance would come the destruction of the old order of privilege through the "Communist Manifesto." Karl Marx was a contradiction to his times, and a revolutionary with a burning desire to change the existing society. His thought, however, was not revolutionary in the sense of being original, but a monumental synthesis of influences in his life, which congealed and culminated in three early works: "Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right," "Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right: Introduction," and the "Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844." Marx was born May 5, 1818 in Trier, a city on the Mosel River • a region renowned for its wine, Roman history, Catholicism, and revolutionary French ideas. Trier, a beautiful city surrounded by vineyards and almost Mediterranean vegetation, had a reputation for wine production from Roman times: Treves (Trier) metropolis, most beautiful city, You, who cultivate the grape, are most pleasing to Bacchus. Give your inhabitants the wines strongest for sweetnessP Marx also had a life-long appreciation of wine; he drank it for medicine when sick, and for pleasure when he could afford it.

  • 'True Democracy' As a Prelude to Communism
Political Philosophy and Public Purpose ‘True Democracy’ as a Prelude to Communism THE MARX OF DEMOCRACY ALEXANDROS CHRYSIS Political Philosophy and Public Purpose Series Editor Michael J. Thompson William Paterson University USA This series offers books that seek to explore new perspectives in social and political criticism. Seeing contemporary academic political theory and philosophy as largely dominated by hyper-academic and overly- technical debates, the books in this series seek to connect the politically engaged traditions of philosophical thought with contemporary social and political life. The idea of philosophy emphasized here is not as an aloof enterprise, but rather a publicly-oriented activity that emphasizes rational refection as well as informed praxis. Marxism and Eschatology Reconsidered Roland Boer Marxism is a secularized Jewish or Christian messianism — how often do we hear that claim? From the time of Nikolai Berdyaev (1937) and Karl Löwith (1949) at least, the claim has grown in authority from countless restatements.1 It has become such a commonplace that as soon as one raises the question of Marxism and religion in a gathering, at least one person will jump at the bait and insist that Marxism is a form of secularized messianism. These proponents argue that Jewish and Christian thought has influenced the Marxist narrative of history, which is but a pale copy of its original: the evils of the present age with its alienation and exploitation (sin) will be overcome by the proletariat (collective redeemer), who will usher in a glorious new age when sin is overcome, the unjust are punished, and the righteous inherit the earth. The argument has served a range of very different purposes since it was first proposed: ammunition in the hands of apostate Marxists like Berdyaev and especially Leszek Kolakowski with his widely influential three-volume work, Main Currents of Marxism;2 a lever to move beyond the perceived inadequacies of Marxism in the hands of Christian theologians eager to assert that theological thought lies at the basis of secular movements like Marxism, however

Abstract: This article has as objective clarify the potency of resistance and intellectuality of Jenny von Westphalen, setting in debate the woman role in the production of knowledge and their atrophy in a patriarchal society. We resort as methodology the analysis of recent productions and oldest ones like the biography by Mary Gabiel - Love and Capital: Karl and Janny Marx and the Birth of a Revolution(2013), the movie The Young Karl Marx (2017) by Raoul Peck and the biography by Françoise Giroud: Jenny Marx or la femme du diable(1996).

On the one hand human rights were being portrayed as a part of a Western ideological propaganda offensive. On the other hand it appeared that human rights were being taken seriously in the cases that the West was accused of riding roughshod over the social basic rights. (1) The question the author wishes to answer in this paper is whether this ambiguity towards human rights was not already present in Marx’s writings. He will first (in part I) analyze the role which Marx’s anthropology and his concept of civil society play in this point of view.

  • The Rediscovery of Karl Marx
IRSH 52 (2007), pp. 477–498 DOI: 10.1017/S0020859007003070 # 2007 Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis REVIEW ESSAY The Rediscovery of Karl Marx Marcello Musto Few men have shaken the world like Karl Marx. His death, almost unnoticed, was followed by echoes of fame in such a short period of time that few comparisons could be found in history. His name was soon on the lips of the workers of Detroit and Chicago, as on those of the first Indian socialists in Calcutta. His image formed the background of the congress of the Bolsheviks in Moscow after the revolution. His thought inspired the programmes and statutes of all the political and union organizations of the workers’ movement, from Europe to Shanghai. His ideas have changed philosophy, history, and economics irreversibly. Yet despite the affirmation of his theories, turned into dominant ideologies and state doctrines for a considerable part of humankind in the twentieth century, and the widespread dissemination of his writings, to date he is still deprived of an unabridged and scientific edition of his works. Of the greatest thinkers of humanity, this fate befell him exclusively. The main reason for this peculiar situation lies in the largely incomplete character of Marx’s oeuvre. With the exception of the newspaper articles he wrote between 1848 and 1862, most of which featured in the New York Tribune, one of the most important newspapers in the world at the time, the works published were relatively few when compared with the amount of works he only partially completed and the imposing extent of research he undertook.

  • Raoul Peck's Film the Young Karl Marx\
H-Film Raoul Peck's film The Young Karl Marx\ Discussion published by Daniel Garrett on Monday, November 11, 2019 I look forward to observing, and participating in, more conversations about subjects related to history and politics of significance, beyond the headlines and crude ideological conflicts. I had a chance to revisit, through film, an old, still current subject -- economic inequality, and how to think about it: Karl Marx, through Raoul Peck's film. A short excerpt, with the web link, is below. (I have written about literature, film, and music, allowing me to consider Hannah Arendt, James Baldwin, Emily Dickinson, Call Me By Your Name and other past and recent subjects of interest; and some of my work can be seen at Offscreen.com and CompulsiveReader.com) Questions I have: How can we integrate radical questions and methods into public discourse? How can we bring ordinary citizens closer to histories and philosophies that may illuminate their lives, though these have been denigrated or misrepresented in the past? How much intellectual weight can art and entertainment carry? These are the sorts of questions that inspire me to pay attention to films such as Raoul Peck's The Young Karl Marx.
