Summer 2016 Issue "Mari Sandoz, Custer, and the Indian Wars" “Mari Sandoz, Custer, and the Indian Wars” is the theme of the 2016 Pilster Lecture on October 13 at the Chadron State College Student Center. Paul Andrew Hutton, Distinguished Professor of History at the University of New Mexico is the guest speaker for this annual event sponsored by the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society and supported by the Esther and Raleigh Pilster Endowment. The mission of the lecture series is to bring speakers of national renown to the Chadron State College campus for the benefit of the college and residents of the high plains of Western Nebraska. The 7:30 pm MT lecture is free to the public. A reception and book signing will be held following the lecture at the CSC Student Center. Hutton has published widely in both scholarly and popular magazines, and is a five‐time winner of the Western Writers of America Spur Award and six‐time winner of the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for his print and film writing. His Phil Sheridan and His Army (1985) received the Billington Prize from the Organization of American Historians, the Evans Biography Award, and the Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. He is also the editor of Western Heritage (2011), Roundup (2010), Frontier and Region (1997), The Custer Reader (1992), Soldiers West (1987), and the ten‐volume Eyewitness to the Civil War series from Bantam Books (1991‐1993). From 1977 to 1984 he was associate editor of the Western Historical Quarterly, from 1985 to 1991 was editor of the New Mexico Historical Review, and from 1990‐2006 served as Executive Director of the Western History Association. -

We promised to have a detailed response to the specific questions, and the enclosure to this letter, prepared principally by the Department of Justice, constitutes that response. As you asked, the response avoids rhetoric and" soothing words" in its answers and confines itself to facts of history and law, with citations of statutes and Court decisions. By way of preface, however, I would like to add a personal word. -

Delaware Indian land Claims: A Historical and Legal Perspective DAVID A. EZZO Alden, New York and MICHAEL MOSKOWITZ Wantagh, New York In this paper we shall discuss Delaware Indian land claims in both a histori cal and legal context. The first section of the paper deals with the historical background necessary to understand the land claims filed by the Delaware. In the second part of the paper the focus is on a legal review of the Delaware land claims cases. Ezzo is responsible for the first section while Moskowitz is responsible for the second section. 1. History The term Delaware has been used to describe the descendants of the Native Americans that resided in the Delaware River Valley and other adjacent areas at the start of the 17th century. The Delaware spoke two dialects: Munsee and Unami, both of these belong to the Eastern Algonquian Lan guage family. Goddard has noted that the Delaware never formed a single political unit. He also has noted that the term Delaware was only applied to these groups after they had migrated from their original Northeastern homeland. Goddard sums up the Delaware migration as follows: The piecemeal western migration, in the face of white settlement and its attendant pressures during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, left the Delaware in a number of widely scattered places in Southern Ontario, Western New York, Wisconsin, Kansas and Oklahoma. Their history involves the repeated divisions and consolidations of many villages and of local, political and linguistic groups that developed in complicated and incompletely known ways. In addition, individuals, families and small groups were constantly moving from place to place. -

Most of the 64,000 American Indians living in South Dakota are members of the Lakota, Nakota and Dakota Nation (also known as the 1 Great Sioux Nation) as well as Americans. Lakota histories are passed from generation to generation through storytelling. One story tells about the Lakota coming to the plains to live and becoming Oceti Sakowin, the Seven Council Fires. The story begins when the Lakota lived in a land by a large lake where they ate fish and were warm and happy. A man appeared, and told them to travel northward. The Lakota obeyed, and began the journey north. On their way they got cold, and the sun was too weak to cook their food. Two young men had a vision, and following its instructions, they gathered dry grasses and struck two flint stones together, creating a spark and making fire. There were seven groups of relatives traveling together. Each group took some of the fire, and used it to build their own fire, around which they would gather. 2 As a result, they became known as the Seven Council Fires, or Oceti Sakowin. During the mid-17th century, nearly all the Sioux people lived near Mille Lacs, Minnesota.3 Pressured by the Chippewas, they moved west out of northern Minnesota in clan groups by the early 18th century.4 The three tribes spoke the same general language, but each developed dialects or variations, which also became their known name. -

[] SENATOR AGUILAR: Welcome everyone to the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee hearing. I'll start off by introducing the senators that are present, and I will introduce the others as they arrive. We've been attacked by a bunch of homeschoolers today and they've taken some of our senators captive. Anyway, on my far right is: Senator Scott Lautenbaugh of Omaha; next to him is Senator Kent Rogert, our Vice Chair, and he's from Tekama, Nebraska; on my immediate right is Christy Abraham, our legal counsel; my name is Senator Ray Aguilar, I'm the chair of the committee from Grand Island. On my immediate left is: Sherry Shaffer, our committee clerk; next is Senator Rich Pahls of Omaha; Senator Greg Adams of York; just coming in is Senator Bill Avery of Lincoln and late Bill Avery of Lincoln.
