Welcome visitors and Taoseños! You are invited to explore the diversity of this region, through a self-guided tour. The two-hundred year old Taos Plaza, and the streets that radiate from it like spokes, form the National Historic District of Taos. It contains a number of national and state landmarks which are Historic testimonials to the rich and complex cultural history of T aos. The T aos Valley has been a major trade and travel route since human presence was first felt in the area. Archeological evidence suggests that people have been using and moving through the Taos Valley for, at least, the past 9,000 years. The ancestors of the Pueblo people, commonly known as the Anasazi, were the first permanent inhabitants of the Valley. Room blocks and pit houses in the Taos area testify to their presence since 900 AD. Around 1200 AD, they aggregat- ed into small above ground structures of 50-100 rooms. Many believe the Taos Pueblo was constructed around 1450 as a multi-story TAOS complex. However, archeologists predominantly place the date of construction of Taos Pueblo in the 14th century on or about 1350. Unfortunately , there is no known recorded date. In any case, the Pueblo Indians depended upon nature for their survival, and therefore treated nature as an organizing and spiritual element in their lives. At the time of the arrival of the Europeans, all of Taos Valley was in the domain of Taos Pueblo Indians. In 1540, Francisco de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador and explorer, was authorized to explor e the area by the king of Spain. -

Alexxa Gotthardt May 17, 2019 5:57 pm Georgia O’Keeffe had an unexpected train detour to thank for her first encounter with New Mexico. Little did she know, it was the land that would free her—both artistically and emotionally. Several months after photographergallerist Alfred Stieglitz presented O’Keeffe’s first New York solo show, in April 1917, the 29yearold painter embarked on a trip across the American West with her youngest sister, Claudia. While they’d planned to head straight from Texas to Colorado, their train detoured to Santa Fe. Cultivation, environment, and faithful caring all have an influence on the final result. Throughout history burgeoning artists have instinctively, and certainly out of financial consideration, opted to live in close communities with fellow artists. In such settings, artists create their own subcultures as they spend their days among like-minded friends who speak their language—a form of communication that is based on their specific brand of artistic discipline and philosophy. Fellowship among artists becomes an essential source of sustaining encouragement in this lifestyle which can be sporadic in work and income. For more information, please contact [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]. • In Memoriam • Dr. Robert Rankin White (1942–2014) Steve Watson obert Rankin White, preeminent southwestern art historian and author, passed away in Albu- querque, New Mexico, on 17 July 2014. Born Rin Houston, Texas, on 8 February 1942, he graduated from the prestigious St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin in 1960. He received a bachelor’s degree in geol- ogy from the University of Texas in 1964, served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and completed a master’s degree in hydrology from the University of Arizona in 1971. After a two-year stint in Texas, Robert worked for the U.S. Geological Survey in New Mexico as a hydrologist and editor for the next fifteen years. He then obtained his doctorate in American Studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1993. During the course of his career, Rob- ert authored or co-authored over fifty books, articles, chapters, and essays in history and the arts. -

Blumenschein: The Life of An American Artist" | Book Reviews | santafenewmexican.com Early in 1898, Ernest Leonard Blumenschein and Bert Geer Phillips, both illustrators in New York, planned a painting trip to Mexico as a break from their work. Although they were ignorant about the outdoors, equine care, and western customs, they would cope. In Denver they purchased camping equipment, two horses, and a wagon. Their route followed the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains. A coin toss and a late summer’s rain-washed road in Northern New Mexico dictated a fateful change in their travel plans. Blumenschein rode the 20 miles to Taos, lugging the wheel that broke when their wagon slipped into a rut and “suddenly sat down.” Approaching the town, the novice equestrian and Paris-educated artist was exhilarated at the sight of the Taos valley’s “magnificent country,” and he realized it signaled their destination. He later commented that it was “the first unforgettable inspiration of [his] life.” Blumenschein’s trajectory from that moment arced toward more study in Paris, greater recognition as an illustrator, numerous awards and prizes, and an international reputation as an artist. In May 2011, his 1922 painting White Robe and Blue Spruce sold for $1,583,500 at Sotheby’s. -

After my first ten years in a gallery in Encino, I moved to Laguna Beach and have been here in the same charming building for the past twenty-one years. After all, Laguna was the favored painting destination and home to many of the early historical artists in which I specialize, so it is quite appropriate that The Redfern Gallery is here as well. It is the same glorious environment that is depicted in many of the paintings I display. I am fortunate to live in Laguna Beach and it still gives me great joy and a sense of accomplishment to come to work and encounter more great paintings from this phenomenal art period. Four years ago, I opened a second gallery location in the beautiful Montage Resort and Spa.
