Box 2447 • Taos, New Mexico 87571 Taos County Historical Society 2 Taos and the American Art Colony Movement: The Search for an American School of Art by Virginia Couse-Leavitt ONE DAY in SEPTEMBER, 1898, Bert Phillips and Ernest Blumenschein drove their wagon into the village of Taos for the first time. It was fate, not design, that led them there, but they were both so captivated by the town, its picturesque people and beautiful environment, that it became their spiritual and literal home. Phillips immediately decided to settle in Taos and Blumenshcein made plans to return as soon as possible. This early permanent commitment to Taos gave Phillips and Blumenshein the distinction of being the actual founders of the art colony, although Henry Sharp had just spent two summers painting there. Archeological evidence suggests that people have been using and moving through the Taos Valley for, at least, the past 9,000 years. The ancestors of the Pueblo people, commonly known as the Anasazi, were the first permanent inhabitants of the Valley. Room blocks and pit houses in the Taos area testify to their presence since 900 AD. Around 1200 AD, they aggregat- ed into small above ground structures of 50-100 rooms. Many believe the Taos Pueblo was constructed around 1450 as a multi-story TAOS complex. However, archeologists predominantly place the date of construction of Taos Pueblo in the 14th century on or about 1350. Unfortunately , there is no known recorded date. In any case, the Pueblo Indians depended upon nature for their survival, and therefore treated nature as an organizing and spiritual element in their lives. At the time of the arrival of the Europeans, all of Taos Valley was in the domain of Taos Pueblo Indians. In 1540, Francisco de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador and explorer, was authorized to explor e the area by the king of Spain.

Alexxa Gotthardt May 17, 2019 5:57 pm Georgia O’Keeffe had an unexpected train detour to thank for her first encounter with New Mexico. Little did she know, it was the land that would free her—both artistically and emotionally. Several months after photographer­gallerist Alfred Stieglitz presented O’Keeffe’s first New York solo show, in April 1917, the 29­year­old painter embarked on a trip across the American West with her youngest sister, Claudia. While they’d planned to head straight from Texas to Colorado, their train detoured to Santa Fe. Born Rin Houston, Texas, on 8 February 1942, he graduated from the prestigious St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin in 1960. He received a bachelor’s degree in geol- ogy from the University of Texas in 1964, served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and completed a master’s degree in hydrology from the University of Arizona in 1971. After a two-year stint in Texas, Robert worked for the U.S. Geological Survey in New Mexico as a hydrologist and editor for the next fifteen years. He then obtained his doctorate in American Studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1993. During the course of his career, Rob- ert authored or co-authored over fifty books, articles, chapters, and essays in history and the arts.

Blumenschein: The Life of An American Artist" | Book Reviews | santafenewmexican.com Early in 1898, Ernest Leonard Blumenschein and Bert Geer Phillips, both illustrators in New York, planned a painting trip to Mexico as a break from their work. Although they were ignorant about the outdoors, equine care, and western customs, they would cope. In Denver they purchased camping equipment, two horses, and a wagon. Their route followed the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains. A coin toss and a late summer’s rain-washed road in Northern New Mexico dictated a fateful change in their travel plans. Blumenschein rode the 20 miles to Taos, lugging the wheel that broke when their wagon slipped into a rut and “suddenly sat down.” Approaching the town, the novice equestrian and Paris-educated artist was exhilarated at the sight of the Taos valley’s “magnificent country,” and he realized it signaled their destination. He later commented that it was “the first unforgettable inspiration of [his] life.” Blumenschein’s trajectory from that moment arced toward more study in Paris, greater recognition as an illustrator, numerous awards and prizes, and an international reputation as an artist. In May 2011, his 1922 painting White Robe and Blue Spruce sold for $1,583,500 at Sotheby’s.

    “Untitled (Indian Drum Song), ca. 1950, by Bert Geer Phillips Spotlight Paper by Ralph Petersen, 2017 Artist’s Background Information Bert Phillips was born in 1868 and raised in Hudson, New York, about 120 miles north of New York City along the Hudson River. He started creating art as a young boy, and he took studio art classes growing up. He left home for New York City at age 16 to study art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design for five years before traveling to England and Paris for two years to sketch, paint and study at the Academie Julian. Phillips had a fascination with Native Americans that began in boyhood. He found a Mohican arrowhead in a limestone quarry near his home and retained it into his adulthood. He was taken by the tales of western heroes, particularly the Indian stories written by James Fenimore Cooper. Kit Carson also fascinated him. Likewise outdoor pursuits like game hunts drew him as a boy. While in Paris, he befriended fellow art student Ernest Blumenschein, who shared his fascination with the American West and Native Americans in particular. Phillips found the landscape captivating and made it his year- round home. Tudl-Tur (Sun Elk), also known as Manuel Mondragón, was Phillips’s friend and served as a guide when he traveled to Native American communities. In this portrait, Phillips immortalizes the man who granted him access to cultural traditions that he would not have otherwise been welcome to observe.     The Taos Society of Artists, 1915-1927 UW Art Museum, fall 2006 Educational packet developed for grades K-12 Introduction In the early 20th century, artists began to make their way to the American Southwest, intrigued by the landscape and the Pueblo culture of the region. In Taos, a group of twelve artists would band together in their quest to paint the land and people of northern New Mexico. Founded by Ernest Blumenschien, Bert Phillips, Oscar E. Berninghaus, E. Irving Couse, Joseph Henry Sharp, and William H. Dunton in 1915, the group, known as the Taos Society of Artists, grew to include Victor Higgins, E. Martin Hennings, Julius Rolshoven, Catherine Critcher, Walter Ufer, and Kenneth Adams. Their work introduced the country to the landscape and Indian culture of the region and was essential in establishing Taos as an artist center that attracted such important 20th century Modernist artists as Georgia O’Keefe, Stuart Davis, John Marin, and Marsden Hartley. The Taos Society of Artists, 1915- 1927, presents examples of each of the twelve members of the group through the generous loans of the Harwood Museum (University of New Mexico), and several private collectors. History The Taos Society of Artists When their wagon broke a wheel outside of Taos, New Mexico during a sketching trip from Denver to Mexico in September of 1898, neither Ernest Blumenschein nor Bert Phillips could have imagined the far-flung consequences of this seemingly unfortunate accident. After losing a coin toss to Phillips, Blumenschein began the twenty mile trek into Taos (where the nearest blacksmith was located), awkwardly balancing the broken wheel on his reluctant horse.
