    Welcome visitors and Taoseños! You are invited to explore the diversity of this region, through a self-guided tour. The two-hundred year old Taos Plaza, and the streets that radiate from it like spokes, form the National Historic District of Taos. It contains a number of national and state landmarks which are Historic testimonials to the rich and complex cultural history of T aos. The T aos Valley has been a major trade and travel route since human presence was first felt in the area. Archeological evidence suggests that people have been using and moving through the Taos Valley for, at least, the past 9,000 years. The ancestors of the Pueblo people, commonly known as the Anasazi, were the first permanent inhabitants of the Valley. Room blocks and pit houses in the Taos area testify to their presence since 900 AD. Around 1200 AD, they aggregat- ed into small above ground structures of 50-100 rooms. Many believe the Taos Pueblo was constructed around 1450 as a multi-story TAOS complex. However, archeologists predominantly place the date of construction of Taos Pueblo in the 14th century on or about 1350. Unfortunately , there is no known recorded date. In any case, the Pueblo Indians depended upon nature for their survival, and therefore treated nature as an organizing and spiritual element in their lives. At the time of the arrival of the Europeans, all of Taos Valley was in the domain of Taos Pueblo Indians. In 1540, Francisco de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador and explorer, was authorized to explor e the area by the king of Spain.

Volcano House began checking in visitors March 22 for the first time since it closed for structural upgrades and interior renovationsT on December 31, 2009. On June 1 the lobby, dining room, gift shop, and bar also reopened for business. Visitors familiar with the island’s oldest hotel will find completely new décor. Gone is the dark wood paneling, dark brown overstuffed leather sofas, and most of koa rocking chairs that gave the hotel’s great room its former gentleman’s club feel. The walls are a much lighter color now, and the lounge is furnished with modern wicker-rattan, as is common in most Volcano House Hotel circa 1866, at the edge hotels in Hawai‘i. Vintage photographs displaying a pictorial of Kīlauea volcano. Mark Twain stayed here and wrote history of the hotel that used to hang on the walls of the bar about it in his book Roughing It. and hallways are gone. This chant, which appeared in Hawaii Holomua shortly after Queen Lili'uokalani's removal in early 1893, expressed a strong desire that she regain her throne.1 "Greek artillery fire" was a classical and heroic allusion by the poet, but it was also, as events turned out, appropriate in that Greek men in Hawai'i during the Revolution and Counterrevolu- tion were loyal to her. During those years, a dozen or so natives of Greece who were Hawai'i residents were involved in the prolonged and ultimately futile struggle to preserve the monarchy. Seven men were active participants, and the rest were royalist sympathizers. Having in common commercial, political, and social interests, they united with other European residents, with non-missionary-descended, more recent American immigrants, and with royalist Hawaiians. The Greeks came into direct conflict with that small but powerful group of haole men who effectively weakened Kalakaua's government by means of the "Bayonet Constitution" of 1887, then led a revolution against Queen Lili'uokalani's government and in 1895 defeated the counterrevolutionists who attempted to restore her to the throne, and, finally, succeeded in having Hawai'i annexed to the United Helen G. Little did she know, it was the land that would free her—both artistically and emotionally. Several months after photographer­gallerist Alfred Stieglitz presented O’Keeffe’s first New York solo show, in April 1917, the 29­year­old painter embarked on a trip across the American West with her youngest sister, Claudia. While they’d planned to head straight from Texas to Colorado, their train detoured to Santa Fe. This was the most elegant and meticulous publication on American Indian art ever offered for sale. Its publication came at a time when American Indian art of the West and Southwest was prominent in the public imagination. Of particular interest to the art world in that decade were the new watercolors being made by Kiowa and Pueblo artists; a place was being made for their display within the realm of the American “fine arts” traditions in museums and art galleries all over the country.
