John Le Carré's the Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold
John le Carré’s The Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold War Jonathan Goodwin Abstract. The Secret Pilgrim was John le Carré’s first novel to consider the end of the cold war. The author describes how the novel’s embedded structure reveals le Carré’s political perspective more clearly than previous works and argues that this narrative frame is an adaptation to the sud- den collapse of le Carré’s traditional subject matter. In a speech given at University of Edinburgh, John le Carré remarked that only the spy novel could reveal the world’s hidden agendas (qtd. in Atwood 21). His own represen- tational agendas of betrayal and duplicity in the cold war (and after) are revealed in an unusual way in his The Secret Pilgrim (1990). The book, which contains a series of discrete episodes linked with a frame narrative, reveals the relationship between le Carré’s politi- cal thought and narrative technique more clearly than any of his other works because of the bareness of its structure. A source for le Carré’s title may be Rupert Brooke’s poem “Dust”: And every mote, on earth or air, Will speed and gleam, down later days, And like a secret pilgrim far By eager and invisible ways, Nor ever rest, nor ever lie, Till, beyond thinking, out of view, One mote of all the dust that’s I Shall meet one atom that was you. (49) The transmutation of the body into its elements in death, and the romantic possibility of preservation of some spirit beyond it, are the immediate references in Brooke’s poem; the particulate imagery of atoms and motes is also significant. -

Watergate: What Was It? by JOHN W. DEAN, IH* First, let me say it is certainly a pleasure to participate in what I believe to be the first serious scholarly examination of the impact of Watergate on the legal profession and the integrity of public service. Certainly sufficient time has passed to take a hard look and reach some conclusions about whether, in fact, Watergate made any difference. I look forward to the insights and observations of the distinguished panelists who have been assembled for this occasion. Events not of my choosing have required me to spend considerable time during the last nine years looking back at my Watergate experience. As a result, I have now read testimony of many others involved in Watergate that I had never looked at or been aware of before; I have examined countless books and memoirs about these events that I had purposefully avoided; and I have spent several months (cumulatively) at the National Archives going through files and presidential recordings from the Nixon White House, plus the files of the Senate Watergate Committee and the Watergate Special Prosecutor's Office. -

Macintyre sees this event as a forerunner of today’s Russian disinformation projects.1 What he omitted, of course, was that this AIDS nonsense was a response to the US disinformation at the beginning of the decade about the KGB shooting the Pope. After I wrote that paragraph I was looking at volume 1 of Charles Moore’s biography of Margaret Thatcher and noticed that he has it that the shooting of the Pope was probably the work of the KGB. Probably? Moore’s caution is striking. Hadn’t the KGB-dunit verdict been accepted by almost all and sundry in the West? Apparently not quite. When first arrested, the shooter (Mehmet Ali Agca) said the Bulgarians and KGB were involved.2 Released from prison, in a recent autobiography, he has claimed that he was told to do it by Ayatollah Khomeini.3 It has also been argued that it wasn’t the KGB but Soviet military 1 A regular survey of Russian disinformation is at <https://euvsdisinfo.eu>. THE ONE GREAT HYPERPOWER IN THE SKY ANTI-AMERICANISM IN CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN LITERATURE JESPER GULDDAL, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Abstract In this article, three recent works by French, English and German authors are analyzed as examples of anti-Americanism in contemporary European literature. Luc Lang’s travel book, 11 septembre mon amour (2003), John Le Carré’s spy novel, Absolute friends (2003) and Frank Schätzing’s apocalyptic ‘eco-thriller’ Der Schwarm (2004) were all written in response to the ongoing ‘war on terror’ and each present remarkably antagonistic interpretations of the United States and its role in the world today. Although the literary strategies employed in these negative representations of the US are very different in each case, the three books share a deep disgust not only with American foreign policy, invariably interpreted as a reckless, deranged bid for global hegemony, but also with American culture and society in general. This article interprets this disgust as an expression of a deep-seated, irrational Americanophobia—that is, of ‘anti-Americanism’. -
