Welcome to Chile GEOGRAPHY Chile’s incredibly thin landmass tricks many people into thinking that it is a relatively small country. However, Chile’s length, about the distance from New York to San Francisco, makes up for what it lacks in width. This length of 2,700 miles/4,300 kilometers is the key factor that allows for there to be such climatic, biological, and geographical diversity. Though its maximum width is 150 miles/240 kilometers, this doesn’t impede you from seeing everything from deserts to penguins. About 80% of Chile’s landmass is made up of mountains, big and small. The large Andes make up all of Chile’s eastern border, while smaller mountain and hill ranges can be found throughout the entire country. Chile’s rocky topography is due to the almost incessant tectonic activity off of its Pacific coast, which has also led to Chile’s proclivity for earthquakes - though the country is well prepared for them. Due to the combination of its length and abundance of mountains, Chile is usually split up into five regions: the far north, near north, central Chile, southern Chile, and the far south. The Far North (Norte Grande) Home to the Atacama Desert, El Norte Grande is more diverse and vibrant than many tourists think it to be before they visit. In contrast to the common idea of deserts being flat and empty plots of land, the Atacama Desert is hilly and mountainous.

    By Private Chef Amalia Damgaard CHILEAN PANORAMA Although it appears slim and small, Chile is a long and narrow country about the size of Texas, with a vast coast line covering about 3,998 miles. The Pacific Ocean borders to the west; Argentina is a neighbor to the east; Bolivia, to the northeast; and Peru, to the north. Because of its geographical location, Chile has an unusual and fun landscape, with deserts, beaches, fjords, glaciers and icebergs, fertile lands, the Andes mountains, over 600 volcanoes (some active), and sub-artic conditions in the South. Since Chile is below the equator, their seasons are different from ours in the United States. So, when we have winter they have summer, and so on. Even though Chile had years of political and economic turmoil, it has evolved into a market-oriented economy with strong foreign trade. Currently, it has the strongest economy in South America, with a relatively-low crime rate, and a high standard of living. Chile is a land rich in beauty, culture, and literature. It is called “the Switzerland of South America” because of its natural splendor. World renowned poets, Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, won Nobel Prizes. The majority of Chileans are descendants of Europeans, namely Spanish, French, and German, and others in smaller numbers. Allegedly, the original inhabitants of the region prior to Spanish conquest were not natives but merely nomads who lived in the area. Their descendants are today about 3% of the population. A mixture of the so-called natives and European settlers is called “mestizo.” Today’s mestizos are so well blended that they look mostly European.

    Paper No. CDDFV CRUSTAL DEFORMATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE 1960 EARTHQUAKE EVENTS IN THE SOUTH OF CHILE Felipe Villalobos 1 ABSTRACT Large earthquakes can cause significant subsidence and uplifts of one or two meters. In the case of subsidence, coastal and fluvial retaining structures may therefore no longer be useful, for instance, against flooding caused by a tsunami. However, tectonic subsidence caused by large earthquakes is normally not considered in geotechnical designs. This paper describes and analyses the 1960 earthquakes that occurred in the south of Chile, along almost 1000 km between Concepción and the Taitao peninsula. Attention is paid to the 9.5 moment magnitude earthquake aftermath in the city of Valdivia, where a tsunami occurred followed by the overflow of the Riñihue Lake. Valdivia and its surrounding meadows were flooded due to a subsidence of approximately 2 m. The paper presents hypotheses which would explain why today the city is not flooded anymore. Answers can be found in the crustal deformation process occurring as a result of the subduction thrust. Various hypotheses show that the subduction mechanism in the south of Chile is different from that in the north. It is believed that there is also an elastic short-term effect which may explain an initial recovery and a viscoelastic long-term effect which may explain later recovery. Furthermore, measurements of crustal deformation suggest that a process of stress relaxation is still occurring almost 50 years after the main seismic event. On the same day, President of Chile Sebastián Piñera 10 announced a state of emergency, authorizing the deployment of Chilean Army 11 forces across the main regions to enforce order, invoking before in the courts 12 the State Security Law against dozens of detainees. A curfew was declared on 13 October 19th in the Greater Santiago area. 14 In the following days, protests and riots expanded to other Chilean 15 cities, including Concepción and Valparaíso. President Piñera addressed 16 the nation on the afternoon of October 20th, saying the country was "at 17 war with a powerful and implacable enemy" and announced that the state 18 of emergency was extending to those cities and other regions, such as 19 Antofagasta, Coquimbo, Iquique, La Serena, Rancagua, Valdivia, Osorno 20 and Puerto Montt.
