This paper first introduces the historical background of popular music in the community and in school music in China in the twentieth century. Second, it explores the reform of music education that has, from the turn of the millennium, included popular music in school music education. This is followed by a discussion of the integration of popular music into the school curriculum in terms of how music education and cultural politics are shaped by the social and political relationships between: (i) contemporary cultural and social values and traditional Chinese ideologies; (ii) collectivism and individualism; and (iii) nationalism and globalism.

In the Second Sino-Japanese War, Chinese female characters in Japanese films or popular songs were portrayed as obedient and able to speak Japanese, for Chinese women who couldn’t speak Japanese were regarded as a potential threat. Such representations strengthened the image of the ideal Chinese woman, who was gaining pro-Japanese sentiments, typically by becoming acquainted with Japanese soldiers. Chinese actresses and singers gave stage performances, appeared on radio, or released records in Japan, where they sang songs in Japanese. It is noteworthy that they were expected to sing in broken Japanese with a thick accent, i.e., use stereotypical ‘role language’. Thus, this paper ascertains how Chinese women’s ‘imperfect’ speech was interpreted as a manifestation of their immaturity and otherness to the Japanese own advantage. Keywords: popular songs; gender role expectation; colonial gaze; critical listening; linguistic imperialism You see this creature with her kerbstone English: the English that will keep her in the gutter to the end of her days.

  • SHAD 20 Dot 1 Book
The Social History of Alcohol and Drugs 20 (2005): 66-104. Opiate Addiction and the Entanglements of Imperialism and Patriarchy in Manchukuo, 1932-45 Norman Smith Abstract. In the Japanese colonial state of Manchukuo, opiate addiction was condemned by officials and critics alike. But the state-sponsored creation of a monopoly, opium laws, and rehabilitation programs failed to reduce rates of addiction. Further, official media condemnation of opiate addiction melded with local Chinese-language literature to stigmatise addiction, casting a nega- tive light over the state’s failure to realise its own anti-opiate agenda. Chinese writers were thus transfixed in a complex colonial environment in which they applauded measures to reduce harm to the local population while levelling critiques of Japanese colonial rule. This paper demonstrates how the Chinese- language literature of Manchukuo did not simply parrot official policies. It also delegitimised Japanese rule through opiate narratives that are gendered, consistently negative, and more critical of the state than might be expected in a colonial literature. …This sacrifice is truly terrifying You’ve turned your life’s blood to mud The price is far too high. If it were your lover You’d have to let it go. It goes without saying that your enemy/lover Is also my enemy/lover… Jie yan ge [Get Off Opium Song]1 In 1942, Li Xianglan (b. 1920), the most famous entertainer in the Japanese colonial state of Manchukuo (1932-45), sang the Jie yan ge to decry the “truly terrifying” cost of the “enemy/lover” Norman Smith is Assistant Professor of History at University of Guelph.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE “Uninvited Guests” – Hao Jingban solo exhibition 27 November 2018 – 12 January 2019 Opening Reception: 24 November 2018, Saturday, 5-6:30pm Artist will be present Venue: Blindspot Gallery (15/F, Po Chai Industrial Building, 28 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong) Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm (Sunday and Monday by appointment only); closed on public holidays Hao Jingban’s first solo exhibition at Blindspot Gallery — “Uninvited Guests” – will feature three new video works from the artist’s most recent project using the Manchukuo of the 1930s-40s as background. The artist conducts historical investigation, archival research, field study and personal interviews, tracing back to the propaganda, drama and documentary films, as well as related figures, from the period of the Manchukuo Film association. By weaving real and fictional narratives in video, reenactments and live performances, Hao explores the politicalness of visual language and the subjectivity of interpretation, revealing the power dynamics, border geopolitics and conflicting identities behind these performative mediums. Forsaken Landscapes is a work integrating live performance and videos, based on several films selected and edited by the artist. These moving images include documentary and propaganda films made in the 1940-50s about Manchukuo, Dersu Uzala, a Soviet-Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1975, and more. The Northeastern China has always shifted in the current of history: from a wild land full of aspirations, to a battlefield where bravery and despondence coexisted, to the “black-soil earth” that symbolised the Socialist spirit of agricultural and industrial expansion, to the slow decline of the “Northeastern” region as a whole.
