Traveling Abroad, Writing Nationalism, and Performing in Disguise: People on the Japanese Colonial Boundaries, 1909-1943 Abstract This dissertation investigates the relationships and discourse among “in-between” people under Japanese colonial rule. Featuring three case studies including literary travalers in Manchuria, colonial writers in Taiwan, and transnational performers in East Asia that each provide multiple evidentiary examples, this study is centered on three dimensions of colonial discourse that deliberately challenged normative identity, nationality, and coloniality: writing as empowerment of local authors, traveling as a project of identity and state building, and cultural performance as imperial propaganda. By examining specific instances in which colonial writers and performers such as Natsume Sōseki, Yosano Akiko, Satō Haruo, Nishikawa Mitsuru, and Ri Kōran in Taiwan and Manchukuo engaged in colonial discourse, this dissertation re-contextualizes and fully portrays the relationships between colonizer and colonized, empire and colonies and, most importantly, human beings and society. Chapter One argues that Sōseki and Yosano’s travel writing not only reveals their ambition to shape the empire but also provides their opinions that reconstructed the borderlines of the Japanese empire. Chapter Two examines the views of colonial identity and binaries through Satō and Nishikawa’s journeys and literary works of Taiwan. Chapter Three analyzes voices and performances from the semi-colonized territory of Manchuria, mainly through the discussion of cinematic representations of Japanese colonialism within the region. This chapter shows that Ri’s cheerful cinematic image portrayed a different dimension of colonial conversation and created a multi-layer conversation between empire and the colonies, and temporarily pacified the tension and anxiety of the war-time period. The concluding chapter explores the question: What is the cultural legacy of the Japanese empire? By examining two Taiwanese colonial writers, Zhang Wenhuan and Long Yingzhong, and their literary works as well as their respective journeys to Tokyo for the first Greater East Asia Writers’ Conference, I claim that their actions amplified colonized voices that attempted to create a counter-discourse from the empire’s edges. To conclude, this dissertation demonstrates that one cannot fully understand colonial reality without acknowledging a multi-dimensional discourse between colonized, colonizer, and people in between. DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING, FINANCE & ECONOMICS GRIFFITH BUSINESS SCHOOL GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2006 ii ABSTRACT This thesis describes the rail gauge decision-making processes of the Australian colonies in the period 1850 – 1901. Federation in 1901 delivered a national system of railways to Australia but not a national railway system. Thus the so-called “standard” gauge of 4ft. 8½in. had not become the standard in Australia at Federation in 1901, and has still not. It was found that previous studies did not examine cause and effect in the making of rail gauge choices. This study has done so, and found that rail gauge choice decisions in the period 1850 to 1901 were not merely one-off events. Rather, those choices were part of a search over fifty years by government representatives seeking colonial identity/autonomy and/or platforms for election/re-election. Consistent with this interpretation of the history of rail gauge choice in the Australian colonies, no case was found where rail gauge choice was a function of the disciplined search for the best value-for-money option.

The whole subject of light railways cannot be treated within the limits of the present short paper, which is confined to narrow-gauge railways of two feet gauge and under: although the author is personally of opinion that the circumstances which would justify the adoption of a gauge under two feet must be of an exceptional character. Comparatively few engineers realise the capability of narrow-gauge railways, and the saving that can be effected by their adoption, when applied to large industrial undertakings. Several instances have come under the author's notice, where the judicious adoption of light narrow-gauge lines, such as those dealt with in this paper, has resulted in considerable financial benefit to those concerned in them. Reasons for adoption.-Narrow-gauge lines of this class may be roughly divided into two categories:-first, where the work to be done is of a permanent and constant nature, enabling the line'to be laid down as a fixture ; and second, where the work is of a temporary character.

    WASEDA RILAS JOURNAL NO. 8 特集 5 特集 5 RILAS 研究部門「創作と翻訳の超領域的研究」 Yosano Akiko’s Princess Saho and its Multiple Speakers Janine BEICHMAN Abstract To translate is to interpret, and this is especially so for a difficult poet like Yosano Akiko. The translator con- fronting the task of interpreting the stupendous number of poems that Yosano Akiko (1878-1942) published over the course of her career begins, of course, by looking into the biographical background and reading as many com- mentaries as possible, but often that is not enough. Then come such avenues of inquiry as comparing iterations of the same themes within the corpus of the poetry itself, picking up echoes of Japanese classical and other litera- tures, and noting connections to Western literature, art, and ideas. In working with the poems here, I have used all these avenues. There is also one other approach, and that is to cycle between Akiko’s prose and her poetry. She often touched on the same topic and themes in both genres, sometimes using the prose to explain the poetry and even vice versa. The essay “Bosei Henchō wo Haisu” (I oppose the glorification of motherhood, 1916) is usually considered only in terms of its role in the public debate on the protection of motherhood (bosei hogo ronsō) that Akiko car- ried on in the media between 1916 and 1919, but it also provides a good background for reading her poetry. This is because Akiko explains her criticism of the glorification of motherhood by eloquently articulating her concep- tion of the self as multi-focal, a conception which in a certain sense is the philosophical counterpart of the multiple speakers that populate her poems.

I attempt to reveal connections between the colonial past and socialist “present”. I also aim to reveal both the idiosyncrasies of Japanese colonialism vis-à-vis Western colonialism from the perspective of the built environment, and the similarities and connections of urban construction between the colonial and socialist regime, despite antithetically propagandist banners, to unfold the shared value of anti-capitalist pursuit of exploring new visions of and different paths to the modern.
