S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY VIEW FROM S T C A L N R N A THE CHAIR IN Y S SATURDAY 27TH JULY 2019 GLE Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Oulton who make the short trip across Leeds for this afternoon’s NCL Division 1 game. Oulton currently lie in 8th place with 14 points, they had a great victory last week against Dewsbury Moor running away with the game 48-8. Well what can you say about our game last week? I think that has to be one of the best crowds in the NCL this year with hundreds here to watch. Milford were blown away in the first 20 minutes with Stanningley scoring 5 tries and 3 goals to make it 26-0 in the first quarter! 32-0 at half time then 44-4 at the final whistle! A lot of glum Milford people leaving the Arthur Miller last Saturday. What a shame. A fantastic team performance once again to leave us in 6th place with 18 points. In the last 3 games our lads have played some inspiring Rugby amassing 146 points and conceding only 10. Today’s game will be a tester against a strong Oulton team who defeated us 30-16 at their place in May. After today we face two of the form sides in our division, next week Featherstone Lions away, the week after at home to York Acorn. These next 3 games will define our season and on our current form we should fear no one We are on a 4 game winning run that has put us into a playoff position, with good results in the next 3 games that position should be cemented. Who fancies a playoff game against Milford in September? Let’s give the lads as much support as possible for the rest of the season. 130 YEAR CELEBRATION DAY Thank you to everybody who attended and helped on our 130th Celebration Day last week. Some fantastic stalls and entertainment, good to see a lot of our ex-players and the incredible result ensured a great day and a fantastic party atmosphere well into the evening, aided by great local band “Cook and the Stew” Big thanks to Cath Brook and the parents of the Under 14’s for helping with the big clear up on Sunday morning. The Raiders’ first win has been a long time coming. West Wales had a terrible time of it in 2018, when they were on the receiving end of some fearful hammerings. And although there has been a marked improvement this time under Aussie coach Kim Williams, the side had been unable until last Saturday to finish a game on the `right’ side of the scoreboard. But it all came right against Coventry, and emphatically so. While you have to feel sorry for the Bears, who aren’t too bad a side at all in my experience, in becoming the Raiders’ first victims, I think there will be general delight around the world of Rugby League that West Wales Raiders have at last broken their `duck’. I’ve raised the point several times in conversations with Welsh stalwarts that it can become very hard for teams that are seeking a first victory to get off the mark, as I know from personal experience when I played for the Middleton Arms in south Leeds and we had two or three bad seasons in the mid-70s. Opponents invariably `up there games’ as they don’t want to be the first team to lose to you, so what’s already a hard task becomes even more difficult. My understanding is that teams facing West Wales have sometimes drafted in players from Super League clubs, such is the fear of making the wrong kind of history. The Raiders will no longer have to worry about that and, hopefully, will make something of an impact on Betfred League 1 in 2020. I’d expected them to do that this year, to be honest, believing that Williams would enlist two or three decent Aussies and that West Wales, as a result, would be much more competitive. They have, indeed, been just that this season, but only in the sense that their defeats have been largely heavy rather than humiliating. But the hoodoo has been broken and it will, surely, now be a case of “onwards and upwards” for West Wales Raiders. I certainly hope so. The side, indeed the club, has suffered enough. And after what must have felt like a Cup Final win last week, the Raiders will now, hopefully, be treated by their opponents just like any other side and will start to pick up their fair share of victories.
