START OF THE MEN’S DOWN- HILL AND THE “FREE FALL”

Engadin St. Moritz is extremely proud to be host of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz. We are looking forward to this thrilling event with tremendous enthusi- asm. This will be the fifth time since 1934 that our beautiful mountain realm has been the unmistakable backdrop for world ski championships – making St. Moritz the only place on the globe that the FIS has entrusted with its world ski championships so often. The event’s organising committee and the team at Engadin St. Moritz are making every effort to organ- ise an atmospheric, authentic and modern sporting event at the highest level of competition.

The superb facilities benefit not only the athletes but also all the other winter sports enthusiasts who spend their winter holidays in Engadin St. Moritz. Of the 88 pistes only one is reserved for the races of the World Ski Championships 2017.

Take advantage of our attractive “Hotel and Ski Pass” deal: if you book more than one night at any participating hotel, your ski pass costs just CHF 35.– per person and day for the entire duration of your stay. The offer applies throughout the winter season, including both weeks of the World Ski Championships 2017.

The “House of St. Moritz” is a single, central meeting point for visitors, competitors, media and locals – the first such venue of any world ski championships, and an important link between the past and the future. The sporting extravaganza will generate worldwide coverage, but visitors and locals can also enjoy a top-quality supporting programme of other events, full of variety. Find details in the programme summary enclosed in this catalogue.

The wonderful climate of the Engadin

The Engadin’s elevated location, high in the Alps, creates unique weather patterns. Experts refer matter-of-factly to a dry, continental climate. As variations in temperature between day and night are as great as those between summer and winter, conditions for winter sports are superb. The dry cold preserves the freshly fallen snow so that the landscape keeps its white, fairy-tale appear- ance throughout the winter, and sports enthusiasts enjoy powder conditions rivalled only by those in the Rocky Mountains. www.engadin.stmoritz.ch www.stmoritz.ch

As host, the Engadin St. Moritz holiday region is looking forward with great pleasure to the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz. The community has set its sights on an atmospheric, authentic and modern sporting event in an unmatched mountain setting. For St. Moritz, these will be the fifth world championships since 1934: a long tradition lies behind the goal of organising an event that is truly pioneering.

To be able to offer competitions at the highest level, outstanding facilities are required. At the same time, there is a duty to protect the unique mountain environment and to respect its boundaries. The world ski championships represent an investment in the future beyond the event itself, as was the case last time the championships were held here in 2003. St. Moritz Page 35

Gourmet pleasures at the highest level

The Engadin St. Moritz region is home to a strikingly inventive and varied gastronomic scene. Here, too, you will encounter the contrasts that are so characteristic of the region. At typical Engadin restaurants, with their ele- gant rustic charm, menus feature delicious local specialities such as capuns (chard-wrapped dumplings), pizokels (buckwheat pasta), plain in pigna (baked potato hash browns with bacon), maluns (slow-fried potatoes with herb butter) and Zuozer Krautsuppe (Zuoz cabbage soup). For world-class international or classical cuisine, head to one of the many exclusive restaur- ants crowned with GaultMillau points or Michelin stars, which are particu- larly abundant in the valley. The restaurants of the top hotels also serve gourmet delights to the very highest standards.

Its name is protected CH-7500 St. Moritz as a trademark and stands worldwide for elegance and high class. It was here that winter T +41 81 837 33 33 tourism was invented in 1864, and to this day, no other resort celebrates it in such style. F +41 81 837 33 77 Guests from all over the world enjoy the chic, cosmopolitan ambiance and a unique com- [email protected] bination of top-quality restaurants in the resort and on the slopes, hotels that set new www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/en/ standards in luxury in every way, and a packed calendar of top-level international events stmoritz – from the FIS Ski World Cup and the Gourmet Festival to the international horse races and the polo tournament on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. The shopping is famously seductive, notably along glamorous Via Serlas, while close by, guests find all kinds of local specialities such as the delicious Engadin walnut cake. Of course, the quality of winter sports on offer in St. Moritz is also superb – from the local mountain, Corviglia/Piz Nair, with its 100 km (62 miles) of pistes, to the legendary Cresta Run and the world’s only natural-ice bob run that still hosts World Cup races. No wonder, then, that after staging four Alpine World Ski Championships and two Olympic Winter Games (in 1928 and 1948), St. Moritz has won the honour of hosting the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships St. Moritz 2017. Samedan Tourist Information The vibrant capital of the Upper Engadin is not only the region’s political centre, but also the focus for the CH-7503 Samedan traditional Engadin way of life. Samedan owes its importance to its location at the heart of the Upper En- T +41 81 851 00 60 gadin: the town serves as a hub for the Rhaetian Railway, as well as being home to a small international F +41 81 851 00 66 airport – a prized launch site for glider pilots. The Badrutt family, which went on to write hotel history [email protected] in St. Moritz, originated here; among many historic features is the magnificent 16th-century Chesa Planta, www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/en/ while new additions include the “vertical” mineral baths. A village that is as vibrant as it is picturesque samedan with its stately traditional Engadin houses may appear idyllic, but the charm is genuine: local people (and two museums) ensure that traditional Engadin culture is very much alive here. Furthermore, all parts of the Engadin are easily reached from here, including the summit of the local mountain, Muottas Muragl, with its stunning panorama and where the impressive first plus-energy hotel in the Alps, the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl, is located. The Survih ski area, the cross-country ski centre and the fast toboggan run also make for enticing winter sports experiences.
