Further information on page 9. AN ENDURING LEGACY Engadin St. Moritz The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz were a major event for the region, one that will live long in our memory. The impact of this celebration of alpine ski sports extends well beyond the occasion itself. The championships offered social, economic and environmental opportunities to the Engadin and to Switzerland that enable an enduring legacy. You can find the report on this legacy at www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/legacy from summer 2017. The Engadin Ski Marathon is another wonderful legacy. This winter, it celebrates its 50th anniversary, having become one of the most eagerly awaited events of the calendar. The initiator and “spiritual father” of the event was the St. Moritz sports dealer and former ski racer Albert Scheuing. It is thanks to him and the various organising committees over the course of half a century that some 13,000 cross-country skiers now tackle the impressive and challenging route of the Engadin Ski Marathon each year in March. Another legacy, already thousands of years old, has endured to this day: the mineral springs of St. Moritz. These are the highest in Switzerland and have embodied life-giving energy for 3,000 years. No wonder it was these springs that founded St. Moritz’s legendary reputation. Ever since the Bronze Age, people have come to bathe in St. Moritz’s mineral water, and the tradition continues to be cherished. The Engadin St. Moritz holiday region also encompasses an exceptional wealth of contrasts. Here, you are sure to find all you need for an unforgettable holiday, whatever your budget. • Terrestrial Hibernation in the Northern Cricket Frog, Acris Cnepitans
1240 Terrestrial hibernation in the northern cricket frog, Acris cnepitans Jason T. hwin, Jon P. Gostanzo, and Rlchard E. Lee, Jr. Abstract: We used laboratory experiments and field observations to explore overwintering in the northern cricket frog, Acris crepitans, in southern Ohio and Indiana. Cricket frogs died within 24 h when submerged in simulated pond warer that was anoxic or hypoxic, but lived 8-10 days when the water was oxygenatedinitially. Habitat selectionexperiments indicated that cricket frogs prefer a soil substrate to water as temperature decreasesfrom 8 to 2"C. These data suggested that cricket frogs hibernate terrestrially. However, unlike sympatric hylids, this species does not tolerate extensive freezing: only 2 of 15 individuals survived freezing in the -0.8 to -2.6"C range (duration 24-96 h). Cricket fiogs supercooledwhen dry (mean supercoolingpoint -5.5"C; range from -4.3 to -6.8'C), but were easily inoculated by external ice at temperatures between -0.5 and -0.8"C. Our data suggested that cricket frogs hibernate terrestrially but are not freeze tolerant, are not fossorial, and are incapable of supercooling in the presence of external ice. Thus we hypothesized that cricket frogs must hibernate in terrestrial sites that adequately protect against freezing. Indeed, midwinter surveys revealed cricket frogs hibernating in crayfish burrows and cracks of the pond bank, where wet soils buff'ered against extensive freezing of the soil.
