Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing.     Speaking Redemption: Narrative Voice in David Elias’s Sunday Afternoon Edna A. Froese, St. Thomas More College, Saskatoon Whatever the recent developments in narrative theology have accomplished by way of allowing Christian believers to negotiate postmodern challenges to the authority of the scriptural foundations of their beliefs, the newly emphasized parallels between theology and literature open up wonderful possibilities for reading fiction as well as the Bible itself. Catherine Wallace, for example, in “Faith and Fiction: Literature as Revelation,” argues that literature “has much to offer religion that religion fails to understand and to accept” (2). With Coleridge and then Steiner, Wallace observes that faith is neither “an act of will [nor] an act of knowledge” but “a creative act, the act of imagination”; thus “art and the encounter with God share a common origin in the human spirit” (5). Since “the knowledge of God is not propositional but visionary” (5-6), the poet (or novelist or playwright) is also an “autonomous and significant theologian” (1), whose task it is “to take all the muddled disruptive incoherence of real fact and actual memory – whether communal or personal – and then select and arrange, reform and recast them into a coherent aesthetic whole that tells a visionary truth that facts alone cannot reveal” (10).1 If the 202 Journal of Mennonite Studies truth that the poet thus reveals is to be understood, whether that poet happens to be the redactor of Scripture or a contemporary novelist, “we must first of all read properly, which is to say attentively, details regarded not as historical facts but as poetic choices” (Wallace 10).

    "A Press with Such Traditions": Oxford University Press of Canada Ruth Panofsky' On Tuesday, 10 August 1904, when Oxford University Press established a branch in Canada,2 it joined a small but significant group of publishing houses already operating in Toronto. By the turn of the century, Toronto had become a centre for Canada's burgeoning publishing industry, home to the Copp Clark Company, W.J. Gage and Company, and the Methodist Book and Publishing House (later Ryerson Press), for example. When Oxford University Press set up shop on "Booksellers' Row"3 at Zy Richmond Street West, the company sought to consolidate its presence in the small Canadian market with a view to establishing itself as an important branch. Eight years earlier, in September 1896, Oxford had opened its first branch operation in New York. The founding of a second branch in Toronto served, in fact, to widen Oxford's presence in North America. By 1929, the Toronto branch could announce with "great pride" that it represented "a Press with such traditions, and such a record of useful and important work, not only in the development of printing but in the History of England."4 After twenty-five years in Canada, Oxford University Press had begun to realize its hopes for expansion.     University of Saskatchewan Department of English Ph.D. Field Examination Ph.D. candidates take this examination to establish that they have sufficient understanding to do advanced research and teaching in a specific field. Field examinations are conducted twice yearly: in October and May. At least four months before examination, students must inform the Graduate Chair in writing of their intention to sit the examination. Ph.D. students are to take this examination in May of the second year of the program or October of the third. The examination will be set and marked by three faculty specialists in the area that has been chosen by the candidate. The following lists comprise the areas in which the Department of English has set readings for Ph.D. candidates: American, Commonwealth/Postcolonial, English- Canadian, Literary Theory, Literature by Women, Medieval, Modern British, Nineteenth- Century British, Renaissance, and Restoration/Eighteenth Century. Each candidate is either to select one of the areas listed here or to propose an examination in an area for which a list is not already set. The set lists themselves are not exhaustive; each is to be taken as two-thirds of the reading to be undertaken for the examination, the final third to be drafted by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor. At least three months before examination, this list will be submitted to the candidate’s Examining Committee for approval. A candidate may choose to be examined in an area for which there is no list. Should this option be chosen, the candidate (in consultation with the supervisor) will propose an area to the Graduate Committee at least six months before the examination is to be taken.

    Larry McDonald The Politics of Influence: Birney, Scott, Livesay and the Influence of Politics The immediate focus of this essay is the manner in which most criti­ cism of Dorothy Livesay, Frank Scott and Ear le Birney has worked to obscure the influence of politics on their writing. More specifically (because the actual extent of political influence must be set aside for the moment), my aim is to demonstrate that dominant critical approaches have foreclosed any possibility of political influence on the writing by disguising, diminishing or eliminating the role that politics played in their lives. The narrow question of how these writers have been packaged for general consumption is best appreciated, however, if viewed as representative of the way that criticism has neglected a key aspect of Canadian literary history. I refer to a suppressed tradition of affiliations, remarkable in both range and intensity, between Cana­ dian writers and socialist ideology. The affiliations between our writers and socialist thought have taken many different forms: some have declared their socialist sympa­ thies in essays and journalism (Archibald Lampman, Margaret Lau­ rence, Kenneth Leslie); some worked long and hard for left-wing organizations or political parties (Earle Birney for the Trotskyists, Dorothy Lives ay for the Communists, Frank Scott for the CCF I NDP, David Fennario for the Socialist Labour Party); some stood for politi­ cal office (F. P. Grove, A. M. Klein, Phyllis Webb, Robin Mathews); some were involved with literary journals that promoted a socialist aesthetic (John Sutherland, Irving Layton, Louis Dudek, Patrick Anderson, Milton Acorn, Al Purdy, Miriam Waddington, Margaret Atwood).
