The diary was found in Guevara's backpack by the Bolivian military after his capture and murder in 1967. It was first published in the United States in 1968 in a special edition of Ramparts magazine, instantly becoming a necessary component of radical student catechism. Che's diary remains fascinating to read, suppressed and hopeful at the same time, and abruptly discontinued. Guevara believed that he was opening the final stage of America's liberation. In this he was decidedly mistaken, but his death and the recent excavation of his remains in Bolivia created a mythology that probably long to survive the end of the Cuban revolution he also helped romanticize. The main figure of the Cuban revolution, after his death, the stylized visage of Guevara became an ubiquitous countercultural symbol and global icon in popular culture. His belief in the need for a world revolution to advance the interests of the poor contributed to his participation in Guatemala's social reforms under President Jacobo Arbenz, whose possible overthrow of the CIA reinforced Guevara's radical ideology. Later, while living in Mexico City, he met with Raul and Fidel Castro, joined their movement and traveled to Cuba with the intention of overthrowing the U.S.-backed Batista regime. Guevara soon rose to prominence among the rebels, was elevated to and played a key role in the successful two-part guerrilla campaign that has been a major attack on the Cuban government. After serving a number of key roles in the new government, Guevara left Cuba in 1965 to ignite a revolution abroad, first unsuccessfully in Congo-Kinshasa and then in Bolivia, where he was captured by Bolivian forces with the assistance of the CIA and executed. Guevara remains both revered and reviled by a historical figure polarized in the collective imagination in a variety of biographies, memoirs, essays, documentaries, songs and films. Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, while Alberto Korda's photograph of him, titled Guerrillero Heroico, was declared the world's most famous photograph by the Maryland Institute of The Arts 1 win. Photo THE Bolivian diary of ALBERTO PISAOLI Che Guevara in 1967 was digitized and made available to the public on the Internet, bringing the iconic communist leader's handwritten memoirs to an exponentially wider audience. AFP reports that Bolivian researcher and che Guevara expert Carlos Soria Galvarro has decided to make the magazine available online to place it within everyone's reach. The Bolivian diary was handed over to the Cubans in 1968 and later published. However, the Cuban Government has revised the text, often to Guevara's wording, AFP notes. Here's Where the Call of the Handwritten Diary Comes In. More From GlobalPost: The New Fidel Castro Castro reminds of the life of the rebels in Mexico you can read Guevara's diary of yourself on the website of Soria Galvarro, although (shocking enough) it is in Spanish. It is presented in a realistic Flash format that gives something of an impression of flipping through a historical document of its own. Che Guevara, who helped inspire the Cuban revolution with Fidel Castro, came to Bolivia in 1966. He hoped to lead a guerrilla peasant uprising, a bold undertaking that angered the Bolivian military as well as the U.S. government. Joint efforts by CIA and Bolivian forces eventually captured and killed Guevara in the same year without trial, the BBC reported. What does a diary look like? According to Kenneth Maxwell of Foreign Affairs: Che's Diary remains fascinating to read, suppressed and hopeful at the same time, and abruptly terminated. Guevara believed that he was opening the final stage of America's liberation. Do you want to sit at the table? Performances of Gender in Revolutionary Contexts: The Case of Nicaragua 1 Performances of Gender in Revolutionary Contexts: The Case of Nicaragua Performances de genre en contextes révolutionnaires : le cas du Nicaragua Viria Delgadillo Introduction 1 Gender policies were at the heart of the 1980s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional’s (FSLN) plans for social change. These policies were crucial to the legitimation of the Sandinista government, both domestically and abroad. In the existing literature on the Nicaraguan revolution, the issues of gender and legal reform as well as gender and revolutionary ideology have been dealt with at length. Molyneux’s (2001), Kampwirth’s (1998, 2006, 2013, 2015) and Montoya’s (2003) illuminating works on Sandinista law-making and gender ideology address how revolutionary ideology shapes legislation regarding women, LGBTQI individuals and the family.

Abstract The problem facing the Cuban Revolution after 1959 was how to increase productive capacity and labour productivity, in conditions of underdevelopment and in transition to socialism, without relying on capitalist mechanisms that would undermine the formation of new consciousness and social relations integral to communism. Locating Guevara’s economic analysis at the heart of the research, the thesis examines policies and development strategies formulated to meet this challenge, thereby refuting the mainstream view that his emphasis on consciousness was idealist. Rather, it was intrinsic and instrumental to the economic philosophy and strategy for social change advocated.

Heller, PhD Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition William D. Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory.

RESTLESS THE STORY OF EL ‘CHE’ GUEVARA by ALEX COX & TOD DAVIES first draft 19 jan 1993 © Davies & Cox 1993 2 VALLEGRANDE PROVINCE, BOLIVIA EXT EARLY MORNING 30 JULY 1967 In a deep canyon beside a fast-flowing river, about TWENTY MEN are camped. Bearded, skinny, strained. Most are asleep in attitudes of exhaustion. One, awake, stares in despair at the state of his boots. Pack animals are tethered nearby. MORO, Cuban, thickly bearded, clad in the ubiquitous fatigues, prepares coffee over a smoking fire. "CHE" GUEVARA, Revolutionary Commandant and leader of this expedition, hunches wheezing over his journal - a cherry- coloured, plastic-covered agenda. Unable to sleep, CHE waits for the coffee to relieve his ASTHMA. CHE is bearded, 39 years old. A LIGHT flickers on the far side of the ravine. MORO Shit. A light -- ANGLE ON RAUL A Bolivian, picking up his M-1 rifle. RAUL Who goes there? VOICE Trinidad Detachment -- GUNFIRE BREAKS OUT. RAUL is firing across the river at the light. Incoming bullets whine through the camp. EVERYONE is awake and in a panic. ANGLE ON POMBO CHE's deputy, a tall Black Cuban, helping the weakened CHE aboard a horse. CHE's asthma worsens as the bullets fly. CHE Chino! The supplies! 3 ANGLE ON CHINO Chinese-Peruvian, round-faced and bespectacled, rounding up the frightened mounts. OTHER MEN load the horses with supplies - lashing them insecurely in their haste. It's getting light. SOLDIERS of the Bolivian Army can be seen across the ravine, firing through the trees. POMBO leads CHE's horse away from the gunfire.

  • Adiós Utopia, Hello Texas the First Major U.S
Adiós Utopia, Hello Texas The first major U.S. show since 1942 of Cuban art comes to Houston. Texans may be forgiven if many of us don’t know the first thing about art from Cuba. For most of the past 58 years, the socialist island nation has been cut off diplomatically and culturally from the United States. Almost all Texans, however, will recognize at least one important work from the island: “Guerrillero heroíco (Heroic Warrior),” the 1960 photograph of Ernesto “Che” Guevara taken by Alberto Korda. Perhaps you’ve seen it on a T- shirt once or twice. Guerrillero Heroico (“Heroic Guerrilla Fighter”) ALBERTO KORDA/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS “Guerrillero heroíco” is, by some estimates, the most reproduced and viewed photo in history. For more than half a century, it has conveniently stood as shorthand for both the island and the revolutionary project transpiring there — romantic, forward- looking and inspiring to some; shallow, dubious and menacing to others. The level of metonymy that Korda’s photo has achieved with his home country speaks to the power of art to reflect and translate the dreams and challenges of a people into a universal visual language. But as vital as “Guerrillero heroíco” remains, the photo is 57 years old. The thrilling hopes and predictable disappointments encoded in Korda’s image have long since been realized, chewed over and spit out by wave after wave of new Cuban artists, many of whom have been sentenced to invisibility in the United States because of embargo politics. The time has come for a closer look. The long overdue U.S.
