Hirohito, Emperor of Japan a Forgotten War Criminal? by Lydia Chagoll Translated from French by Google Translate
Hirohito, Emperor of Japan A forgotten war criminal? by Lydia Chagoll Translated from French by Google Translate April 29, 1987. According to the radio, you Emperor Hiro-Hito, you the oldest reigning monarch, would have felt unwell during an official meal offered for your 86th birthday. But your state of health did not seem to be of great concern. It was only an indisposition. There is certainly more important than the fortunes and misfortunes of royal personages. Personally, I am not interested in it. But you, Emperor of Japan, are an exception to the rule. You, Emperor Hirohito, do not leave me indifferent. Do you not have millions of deaths on your conscience? Millions of people who, in your name, by the hands of your servile subjects, have been martyred to death, beaten to death, trampled to death, crucified, hanged, beheaded, drowned, buried alive, burned alive, finished by the bayonet. I have decided to send you an open letter. A letter begins courteously with Monsieur, dear Monsieur, Sire, dear Sire, Excellency. In your case by Majesty. Majesty, as for you, proves impossible. For more than three years I had, under duress, to show you respect. You were, at that time, Emperor of Dai-Nihon (Greater Japan). The ceremonies of bowing the head in front of you have been taught to us by means of beatings, kicks, punitive constraints, reductions made to our already so meagre ration. We have bowed to you, literally and figuratively, to the point of vomiting. Always the deepest inclination because it was addressed to the Emperor. -
The Heritage of Rogier Van Der Weyden. Painting in Brussels 1450-1520
Press Release Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium The heritage of Rogier van der Weyden. Painting in Brussels 1450-1520. 11.10 2013 > 25.01 2014 In the autumn of 2013 the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium will stage an exhibition devoted to painting in Brussels in the period between the death of Rogier van der Weyden (1464) and the activity of Bernard van Orley (1515- 1541). At that moment Brussels was a thriving town. The Coudenberg Palace being the favourite residence of the dukes of Burgundy. It was surrounded by the palaces of courtiers and noble families like the Nassau or the Ravenstein. They were all important patrons of the arts. It is difficult to identify the painters of this period. Among the painters active in Brussels at that moment, Colyn de Coter is the only one of whose signed work has come down to us. Rogier van der Weyden, Portrait of Antony of Bourgondy ca. 1430 -1504 (1456 - 1464), Oak, 38,4 x 28 x 0,4 cm ©MRBAB/KMSKB Through a document we know that Aert van den Bossche painted a triptych for the Saint Nicolas church. Pieter van der Weyden, who inherited the famous workshop of his father Rogier, is mentioned in several documents, but no painting can be attributed with certainty to him. On the other hand, there are unsigned and undocumented paintings that show a strong influence of Rogier van der Weyden, or others with the inscription "te Bruesele" - made in Brussels - and some that prominently depict Brussels monuments, like the Saint Gudula Cathedral. -

ABSTRACT The architecture directly reveals its functionality and the sacredness of their structures. But the Early Flemish transform their scenography in an endless source of meanings from “disgui- sed symbolism”. To set their iconographic these painters based on the Christian tradition and theology of the Middle Ages. This text intends to go in depth the relationship between archi- tecture, liturgy and symbols through the works of R. Campin, D. Bouts and V. van der Stockt preserved in the Museo del Prado. Facing the Sea: the Jews of Salonika in the Ottoman Era (1430–1912)

Origins, Settlement and Heyday, 1430–1595 Jews resided in Salonika many centuries before the Turkic tribes first made their appearance on the borders of Western civilization, at the Islamic world’s frontier. In fact, Salonika was one of the cities in whose synagogue the apostle Paul had preached Jesus’ teachings. Like many other Jewish communities is this part of the Roman (and later the Byzantine) Empire, this had been a Greek-speaking community leading its life in much the same way as the Greek pagans, and later, the Christian city dwellers around them. The Ottoman conquest of Salonika in 1430 did little to change their lifestyle. A major upheaval did take place, however, with the Ottoman takeover of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, the Conqueror (Fatih in Turkish), aimed to turn the former Byzantine capital into the hub of his Empire, a world power in its own right on a par with such earlier grand empires as the Roman and the Persian. To that effect, he ordered the transfer of entire populations— Muslims, Greeks, and Jews—from other parts of his empire to the new capital in order to rebuild and repopulate it. -
