Lady Howard De Walden and the First World War
Lady Howard de Walden and the First World War Margherita van Raalte married the 8th Baron Howard de Walden in 1912 at St Marylebone Parish Church where Lord Howard de Walden was Crown Warden. At the time the name was over 300 years old, granted to Lord Howard by Elizabeth I in 1588, supposedly in gratitude for his bravery in battle against the Spanish Armada. Margherita possessed the aristocrat’s structure – her neck was long, and took its languid time to meet her body. Her fingers were slim and graceful: designed to dangle jewels or to barely hold a fan of feathers. And her eyebrows rushed downwards: the titled lady’s suffering, hooded glory.After holding the ancient name for only a few years, she too was fighting. She defied the Director General of Army Services who refused to give her permission to take on a Matron and eleven private nurses and establish a convalescent hospital in Egypt. It became the Convalescent Hospital No. 6, in Alexandria. A newspaper article from January 10, 1916 read: “A visit was paid to Lady Howard de Walden’s British Red Cross hospital which was formerly a palatial residence. Much marble has been used in its construction, and it stands amidst beautiful grounds. Among the patients were 36 New Zealanders. Lady de Walden’s husband, who is serving with the Forces in the Dardanelles, is one of the richest men in England, and both husband and wife have been generous and indefatigable to a degree. New Zealanders who come to this hospital are indeed fortunate.” This patient is wearing his ‘hospital blues’. -

CHAUCER AND CHIVALRY by Francine Renee Hall (Knight Templar Magazine, page 28, Dec. 1980) (Reprinted Knight Templar Magazine, pages 16-17, August 2001) In his medieval classic, "The Canterbury Tales," Geoffrey Chaucer is quite deliberate when he introduces his cast of characters with the Knight. Although chivalry was a stylized code of behavior that signaled the decay of the medieval feudal system, Chaucer is upholding what is essentially the perfect expression of earthly behavior with divine aspiration -- knighthood. During the Age of Chivalry, the ideal knight owed fealty to his king. The king considered himself God's intermediary, so a knight's military obedience became not only a spiritual defense of Christendom in general but a personal homage to God. In the Middle Ages, God was often referred to as the "Lord" and "Heaven-King"; therefore, when Chaucer tells us that the Knight "had proved his worth in his *lord's* wars," we can easily interpret this as meaning God Himself. Chaucer's Knight, then, becomes the standard by which the other pilgrims are gauged. And the Pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Thomas Becket at Canterbury becomes more than an opportunity to journey to a different place and tell stories -- the presence of the Knight transforms it to a spiritual quest. What is the history of this saintly English Knight who leads the "company of nine and twenty" on their pilgrimage to Canterbury and who sets the spiritual tone of the journey? He "loved chivalry, truth and honor, liberality and courtesy." He also "proved his worth" in the holy wars and yet he is humble: "Although he was valiant, he was prudent, never in all his life had he been rude to anyone at all. -

TThhee AArrttiicclleess ooff CChhiivvaallrryy We as Chivalric Knights of the Holy Order of the Fellow Soldiers of Jacques DeMolay, as we affix our signatures to this set of articles, do hereby agree to uphold them as a covenant upon which we wish to base our lives as Sir Knights. We further recognize that through the incorporation of these articles into our lives, we can better represent ourselves and the Order of DeMolay. We further assert our willingness to be removed from the roles of Knighthood should it ever be found that our conduct has been contrary to the principles herein set. Article 1 - A Sir Knight is Honorable 1. A Sir Knight must accept responsibility for the one thing that is within his control: himself. 2. A Sir Knight must always keep his word, realizing that a man who's word is as good as his bond is held in high esteem by all. 3. A Sir Knight must never speak harshly or critically of a Brother, unless it be in private and tempered with the love one Brother has for another, always speaking to him for the purpose of aiding him to be a better man. 4. A Sir Knight must always rely on his instincts and those lessons taught to him throughout the course of his DeMolay career when deciding right from wrong. Article 2 - A Sir Knight Shows Excellence 1. A Sir Knight must commit to excellence, and seek the highest level of excellence in all aspects of his life. 2. Using information from the herald’s visitations of four counties, it offers quantitative evidence of the proportion of gentry children who entered university, spent time at one of the inns of court or became apprentices in London. We show that over the period there was little change in the educational destinations of gentry sons: university and apprenticeship absorbed roughly equal proportions; the inns of court slightly less. We also show that a son’s position in the birth order had a very strong influence on the kind of education he received. Eldest sons were much more likely to go to university or one of the inns of court. Younger sons were much more likely to become apprentices in London – as we show, trade clearly was an acceptable career for the gentry. There is little sign of a change in the status of different educational choices in this period. Our findings confirm some traditional assumptions about the importance of birth order and normative expectations in determining the life-courses of gentry children in the seventeenth century: historians should not over-state the autonomy of elite children in deciding their futures. -

Sir John Fogge of Ashford. SARAH BOLTON Sm JOHN Focce, well known for his refusal to be reconciled to Richard III in 1483, is worthy of closer study. Not only does his career illustrate the extent to which the fortunes of the gentry could be affected by the political changes of the fifteenth century, but also the increasing use made of their services in royal government, and the réle they could play in local affairs. The Fogge family originated in Lancashire, but one Otho moved to Kent in the reign of Edward 1. Through judicious marriages his descendants acquired sizeable properties in East Kent. Sir Francis Fogge, grandson of Otho, married the co-heiress of Waretius de Valoyns and thereby acquired Cheriton, Repton Manor in Ashford, which became the family’s principal residence, Beechborough, and Sene Farm. Sir Francis’ great-grandson, Sir William, in his turn, married as his second wife the only daughter and heiress of Sir William Septvans, through whom he acquired the manor of Milton.1 Our Sir John was born, according to Wedgwood, in 1425, but there seems some debate over his immediate antecedents. In a lawsuit in 1460 he called himself son and heir of John; this John was, according to Wedgwood, a younger brother of William, or, according to another source, an older brother. Sir John’s mother was Jane Catton, and through this marriage the family gained the manor of Crixall.2 Debate over the Fogge pedigree does not stop here. Sir John himself married 'twice: unfortunately to two ladies named Alice. One was Alice Kiriell, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Thomas Kiriell, who died in the second battle of St Albans fighting for the cause of York. -

Golnaz Nanbakhsh University of Edinburgh Politeness and address forms in contemporary Persian: Thirty years on Abstract. This paper examines the correlation between language use (particularly address terms and pronouns), politeness norms, and social structure in contemporary Iranian society. The Persian system of address terms in post-revolutionary Iran was influenced by the Islamic ideology of the early 1979 Iranian revolution (Keshavarz 1988). These terms include extensive use of kinship terms such as bæradær ‘brother’ and xahær ‘sister’ in public domains, which clearly illustrate that influence. In an attempt to investigate the impact of the 1979 revolution on language use and politeness, the patterns of contemporary Persian address usage are compared with the social and political structure of the 1979 egalitarian ethos. Ten hours of spontaneous media conversation (candid camera and interviews) and 20 sociolinguistics interviews gathered in Iran are analysed. The interactional analysis reveals variation within the Persian address system leading to changes in linguistic and social structuring of language in contemporary Iran.
