“Muppets Now” is The Muppets Studio’s first unscripted series and first original series for Disney+. In the six- episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him. Overflowing with spontaneous lunacy, surprising guest stars and more frogs, pigs, bears (and whatevers) than legally allowed, the Muppets cut loose in “Muppets Now” with the kind of startling silliness and chaotic fun that made them famous. From zany experiments with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker to lifestyle tips from the fabulous Miss Piggy, each episode is packed with hilarious segments, hosted by the Muppets showcasing what the Muppets do best. Produced by The Muppets Studio and Soapbox Films, “Muppets Now” premieres Friday, July 31, streaming only on Disney+. 05_559702_part5.qxd 7/23/04 11:40 AM Page 182 Part Five Disney’s California Adventure A Brave New Park The Walt Disney Company’s newest theme park, Disney’s California Adventure, held its grand opening on February 8, 2001. Already known as “DCA” among Disneyphiles, the park is a bouquet of contradictions conceived in Fantasyland, starved in utero by corporate Disney, and born into a hostile environment of Disneyland loyalists who believe they’ve been handed a second-rate theme park. The park is new but full of old technology. Its parts are stunningly beautiful, yet come together awk- wardly, failing to comprise a handsome whole. And perhaps most lamen- table of all, the California theme is impotent by virtue of being all-encompassing. The history of the park is another of those convoluted tales found only in Robert Ludlum novels and corporate Disney. Southern California Dis- ney fans began clamoring for a second theme park shortly after Epcot opened at Walt Disney World in 1982. Although there was some element of support within the Walt Disney Company, the Disney loyal had to content themselves with rumors and half-promises for two decades while they watched new Disney parks go up in Tokyo, Paris, and Florida. For years, Disney teasingly floated the “Westcot” concept, a California version of Epcot that was always just about to break ground. Whether a matter of procrastination or simply pursuing better opportunities elsewhere, the Walt DisneyCOPYRIGHTED Company sat on the sidelines while MATERIAL the sleepy community of Anaheim became a sprawling city and property values skyrocketed.

Viola 2009 Marina R. Viola Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science December 2009 The thesis of Marina R. Viola was reviewed and approved* by the following: Lorraine Dowler Associate Professor of Geography and Women‘s Studies Thesis Advisor Melissa W. Wright Associate Professor of Geography and Women‘s Studies Karl Zimmerer Professor of Geography Head of the Department of Geography *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ABSTRACT Disney turns fantasy into reality. ―Imagineers‖ are Disney‘s team of dream makers responsible for creating the magic. Nearly one dozen international theme parks, a cruise ship line, shopping centers, hotels and ownership of the community Celebration, Florida attest to Imagineering‘s cultural influence and success. This vast and variant space along with widely recognized topographic neologisms such as ―Disneyscapes,‖ and ―Disneyfied,‖ illustrate the Company‘s ability to transform ordinary landscapes into fantasy-scapes. In 2001, Disney deviated from its traditional Imagineering practices and attempted to re-recreate reality. Disney‘s California Adventure park opened as a celebration of the Golden State and the Golden Dreams that brought countless individuals in search of opportunity. Using qualitative methods, this study textually analyses the stories conveyed throughout the park‘s artwork, architecture, landscape and iconography. This thesis reveals that the lives and ―dreams‖ of various California subcultures are represented in demeaning and stereotypical manners that reinforce the superiority and dominance of white males over California‘s landscape.

This is where I met many of the independent game designers I’ve come to know and respect while feeling this renewed sense of vigor about my academic studies. I came alive when I discovered this area of study and I still have that spark every time I talk about it to others or read someone else’s inquiry into independent game development. For this, I thank Dr. Peaslee for being the catalyst in finding a home for my passions. More pertinent to the pages that follow, Dr. Peaslee also carefully combed through each malformed draft I sent his way, narrowed my range of topics, encouraged me to keep my sense of progress and challenged me to overcome challenges I had not previously faced. I feel honored to have worked with him on this as well as previous projects.
