In celebration of the thirty-fifth anniversary of our walking tours, the Los Angeles Conservancy is revisiting our first-ever offering: a self-guided tour from 1978 called Would You Believe L.A.? The tour map included fifty-nine different sites in the historic core of downtown, providing the basis for the Conservancy’s first three docent-led tours. These three tours still take place regularly: Pershing Square Landmarks (now Historic Downtown), Broadway Historic Theatre District (now Broadway Theatre and Commercial District), and Palaces of Finance (now Downtown Renaissance). In the years since Would You Believe L.A.? was created and the first walking tours began, downtown Los Angeles has undergone many changes. -

A City of [ PART 1 OF 2 ] Theatres By Marc Wanamaker n Noted theatre historian Marc Wanamaker is Hynda’s guest columnist this month. Part two continues next month. t is not generally known, but Los Angeles was one of the largest Itheatre towns in the United States dating back to the 19th cen- tury. Beginning with legitimate stages and later cinema theatres, Los Angeles boasted more than several thousand theatres sprawl- ing throughout the entire Los Angeles area by the 1920s. Every main street in every town had a theatre on it, and by the time movies came to Los Angeles there were even more built that were bigger and better. Los Angeles had a grand legitimate theatre history since the mid-19th century as described by famed stage and film actor Hobart Bosworth, who worked in several of the downtown theatres in the 1880s and 1890s. Bosworth described the theatre world of Los Angeles as “surprisingly robust and patronized by thousands of residents who were knowledgeable about the plays and players.” Los Angeles had its first semi-permanent stage, an open-air cov- ered platform with a proscenium arch near the Plaza in 1848, but the most important theater to be built in Los Angeles was the 1,200-seat Ozro Childs Grand Opera House, built in 1884 on Main Street near First. From the mid-1880s, Los Angeles became a regular stop for touring theatrical companies, starring some of the world’s most illustrious stars including Sarah Bernhardt, Maurice Barrymore, Lillian Russell, Anna Held and Lionel Barrymore, among many others. -

Abstract The Terry Helgesen Collection contains 26 oversize scrapbooks, some correspondence, several draft chapters of a book on theatres, and an oil painting of a young Terry Helgesen. The scrapbooks consist of photographs and drawings of theatres collected by THS member Terry Helgesen with his descriptions of the theatres and other information such as number of seats, architect, opening and closing dates, renovation and demolition dates, and other notable facts. Background Information Terry Helgesen (1914-1995) was a pianist who played on stage in the waning days of presentation houses (a short stage show followed by a movie) as well as in nightclubs. Terry was also a THS Founding member and the 1979 Member of the Year. He was born in Seattle, WA but his family moved to Santa Barbara, CA when he was still very young. He was tutored in piano by Roger Clerbois and Joseph Hoffman, among others. Terry entered vaudeville (variety entertainment with a mixture of comedy, song and dance) in a “tyke” act called “Terry and Ty” with Terry playing a miniature piano and Ty doing a quick-step. Though Terry started as part of an act, he later changed to accompaniment and played on the Orpheum, Fanchon & Marco and Publix circuits. During his travels he sought out newspapers and photographers who had images of theatres which he purchased and assembled into scrapbooks. -

Center Theatre Group's production of Pulitzer finalist "Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue" (at the Kirk Douglas Theatre January 27 through February 25, 2018) and Pulitzer winner "Water by the Spoonful" (at the Mark Taper Forum January 31 through March 11) will be joined by Latino Theater Company's production of the final installment of the trilogy "The Happiest Song Plays Last" (at the Los Angeles Theatre Center February 17 through March 19). It is the first time all three plays will run at the same time in one city. "It's really thrilling to get a chance to see the plays produced back to back for the first time in a single city," said Hudes. "You see one play, and you get that beginning, middle, end-you get that story. But you see two, three of the plays, you get that sense of family all of a sudden. You've gone through it over time with this family. So I think the ending of the entire trilogy lands in a deeper way. The laughs get deeper, the pain gets more pronounced. Hopefully the plays are resonating off of each other in ways that will yield rewards." "This is a special moment for our patrons and for us-and really for anyone in Los Angeles who loves theatre," said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. -

L.A.’s Urban Renaissance Take a fresh look at downtown’s thriving food, art, and music scene By Josh Jenisch Westways January/February 2013 Dig into a hearty bowl of tonkotsu ramen at Daikokuya, a popular dining spot in Little Tokyo. Over the past decade, downtown Los Angeles has experienced a phoenixlike resurrection. Previously abandoned and decaying office buildings are now filled with interesting-looking people and their designer dogs. Cluttered storefronts that once peddled knockoff Nike gear have been transformed into coffee shops, art galleries, and the occasional mescal bar. This isn’t to say that downtown L.A. is Xanadu with bike lanes. The area still has enough character to be considered gritty by all but the most disaffected hipster. But corporate sterilization (think Times Square) hasn’t happened here. Yet. What has happened here is art—and lots of it. Visual, culinary, and musical artists have moved downtown in droves, helping to reshape the area into a bastion of creativity and commerce. These days, you don’t have to walk far in downtown L.A. to reach an underground art gallery, a four-star restaurant, or a beautifully restored music venue. Although many people think downtown is “that place you go for jury duty,” it’s actually the cultural nucleus of Los Angeles. Best of all (and unlike just about anywhere else in the city), you can experience most of it without a car. Join us now, for a (mostly) walking tour of downtown L.A.’s cultural revolution.
