2016 Neighborhood Profile Covenant Blu/Grand Center Blu/Grand Covenant Washington University Medical Center A partnership between BJC HealthCare and Washington University in St. Louis 1 Covenant Blu/Grand Center Neighborhood Introduction The Covenant Blu- Grand Center neigh- borhood is located at the geographic center of the City of St. Louis, home to a dynamic and diverse array of anchor institutions, residents , and venues for the arts. The neighborhood suffered from precipitous decline in the latter half of the 20th century while dealing with significant structural changes, but has been engaging in revitalization efforts with its stakeholder institutions since the 1980s, achieving great progress along the way. Covenant Blu- Grand Center is located just north of Saint Louis University, centered around the Grand Center Arts District on North Grand Blvd, home to the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Powell Symphony Hall, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and a host of additional arts, media, and civic institutions and venues. With the motto, “The Intersection of Art & Life”, Grand Center is arguably the center of the high arts community in St. Louis while presenting a skyline of architectural landmarks recognizable and visible to St. Louisans throughout the city. In the early decades of the 20th Century, the area was known as the social hub of Saint Louis, with the city’s 2 grandest social clubs, fraternities, hotels, and classic theatres. However, by the middle of the century, these venues fell out of fashion as society moved westward and many were shuttered. As private investment withdrew from the City, the urban fabric of the neighborhood surrounding the Grand Center Arts District experienced great decline. -

Education Program Handbook for Teachers WELCOME We look forward to welcoming you and your students to the Sheldon Concert Hall for one of our Education Programs. We hope that the perfect acoustics and intimacy of the hall will make this an important and memorable experience. ARRIVAL AND PARKING We urge you to arrive at The Sheldon Concert Hall 15 to 30 minutes prior to the program. This will allow you to be seated in time for the performance and will allow a little extra time in case you encounter traffic on the way. Seating will be on a first come-first serve basis as schools arrive. To accommodate school schedules, we will start on time. The Sheldon is located at 3648 Washington Boulevard, just around the corner from the Fox Theatre. Parking is free for school buses and cars and will be available on Washington near The Sheldon. Please enter by the steps leading up to the concert hall front door. If you have a disabled student, please call The Sheldon (314-533-9900) to make arrangement to use our street level entrance and elevator to the concert hall. CONCERT MANNERS Please coach your students on good concert manners before coming to The Sheldon Concert Hall. Good audiences love to listen to music and they love to show their appreciation with applause, usually at the end of an entire piece and occasionally after a good solo by one of the musicians. Urge your students to take in and enjoy the great music being performed. Food and drink are prohibited in The Sheldon Concert Hall. -

Movie-Going on the Margins: The Mascioli Film Circuit of Northeastern Ontario A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY JESSICA LEONORA WHITEHEAD GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO February 2018 © Jessica Leonora Whitehead 2018 ii Abstract Northeastern Ontario film exhibitor Leo Mascioli was described as a picture pioneer, a business visionary, “the boss of the Italians,” a strikebreaker and even an “enemy alien” by the federal government of Canada. Despite these various descriptors, his lasting legacy is as the person who brought entertainment to the region’s gold camps and built a movie theatre chain throughout the mining and resource communities of the area. The Porcupine Gold Rush—the longest sustained gold rush in North America—started in 1909, and one year later Mascioli began showing films in the back of his general store. Mascioli first came to the Porcupine Gold Camp as an agent for the mining companies in recruiting Italian labourers. He diversified his business interests by building hotels to house the workers, a general store to feed them, and finally theatres to entertain them. The Mascioli theatre chain, Northern Empire, was headquartered in Timmins and grew to include theatres from Kapuskasing to North Bay. His Italian connections, however, left him exposed to changes in world politics; he was arrested in 1940 and sent to an internment camp for enemy aliens during World War II. This dissertation examines cinema history from a local perspective. The cultural significance of the Northern Empire chain emerges from tracing its business history, from make-shift theatres to movie palaces, and the chain’s integration into the Hollywood-linked Famous Players Canadian national circuit. -

PRELIMINARY HISTORIC DISTRICT STUDY COMMITTEE REPORT GROSSE POINTE ESTATE HISTORIC DISTRICT GROSSE POINTE, MICHIGAN Adopted FEBRUARY 15, 2021 CHARGE OF THE HISTORIC DISTRICT STUDY COMMITTEE The historic district study committee was appointed by the Grosse Pointe City Council on December 14, 2020, pursuant to PA 169 of 1970 as amended. The study committee was charged with conducting an inventory, research, and preparation of a preliminary historic district study committee report for the following areas of the city: o Lakeland Ave from Maumee to Lake St. Clair o University Place from Maumee to Jefferson o Washington Road from Maumee to Jefferson o Lincoln Road from Maumee to Jefferson o Entirety of Rathbone Place o Entirety of Woodland Place o The lakefront homes and property immediately adjacent to the lakefront homes on Donovan Place, Wellington Place, Stratford Place, and Elmsleigh Place Upon completion of the report the study committee is charged with holding a public hearing and making a recommendation to city council as to whether a historic district ordinance should be adopted, and a local historic district designated. A list of study committee members and their qualifications follows. STUDY COMMITTEE MEMBERS George Bailey represents the Grosse Pointe Historical Society on the committee. He is an architect and has projects in historic districts in Detroit; Columbus, OH; and Savannah, GA. He is a history aficionado and serves on the Grosse Pointe Woods Historic Commission and Planning Commission. Kay Burt-Willson is the secretary of the Rivard Park Home Owners Association and the Vice President of Education for the Grosse Pointe Historical Society. -

In celebration of the thirty-fifth anniversary of our walking tours, the Los Angeles Conservancy is revisiting our first-ever offering: a self-guided tour from 1978 called Would You Believe L.A.? The tour map included fifty-nine different sites in the historic core of downtown, providing the basis for the Conservancy’s first three docent-led tours. These three tours still take place regularly: Pershing Square Landmarks (now Historic Downtown), Broadway Historic Theatre District (now Broadway Theatre and Commercial District), and Palaces of Finance (now Downtown Renaissance). In the years since Would You Believe L.A.? was created and the first walking tours began, downtown Los Angeles has undergone many changes. -
