While the following abstract summarizes my project’s scholarly contribution, research questions, methods and conclusions, the final project is archived in the Department of History at California State University, Northridge. Mythology has been used for millennia as a means of storytelling. Whether it was for entertainment or for educational purposes, mythology has permeated civilization. Joseph Campbell conducted extensive research into the longevity of mythology and its v universality, but why is it still so prevalent today in popular culture? Hercules is one of the most recognizable mythological figures, at least in western societies, and he still has a strong presence in popular culture today. By peering into some uses of Hercules in popular culture from Victorian England’s Punch Magazine and modern popular culture such as the video game God of War III and the Disney film Hercules, it is possible to identify and analyze the methods used to adapt this character. -

Provost’s Message As the Interim Provosts, we are delighted to welcome you to Otis. You are joining a community of talented and dedicated artists, designers, scholars, and educators whose mission is to prepare “diverse students of art and design to enrich our world through their creativity, their skills, and their vision.” Our first-year Foundation program will teach you the critical core fundamental skills to your major; start- ing in the sophomore year, each of the studio majors will sequentially advance you through a curriculum grounded in academic excellence, advancing your work and professional preparation. The liberal studies program will complement and extend your studio experience, preparing you to better deal with the tumult of an increasingly complex and constantly changing world whose challenges demand self-reflection and creativity. Our graduate programs advance those practices through rigorous, practice-based studies with distinguished faculty. Undergraduates will participate in our Integrated Learning program, collaboratively learning in interdisci- plinary teams in projects that bridge the gap between school and community, neighborhoods and genera- tions, cultures and histories. The Sustainability Minor launches this year with an Integrated Learning course that introduces you to the current sustainability perspectives and challenges of the 21st century. Our Interdisciplinary Concentrations allow you to compose a concentration outside of your major, and our minors are defined course sequences that you may study alongside your major. Andrea Bowers the New Woman's Survival Guide
Andrea Bowers The New Woman’s Survival Guide October 29th – December 17th, 2011 Opening reception: Saturday, October 29th, 6 – 8pm The Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to present Andrea Bowers’ second exhibition at the gallery entitled,The New Woman’s Survival Guide. Consisting of drawings layered over wallpaper made up of hand-bills and protest signs collected by the artist, the show contrasts previous tropes of feminism with current ones. Three walls in the gallery will be covered completely with recent feminist activist signs – paired with brightly colored “wall paper” which grounds contemporary activist rhetoric to a more traditional idea of the feminine in the form of floral or glittered wallpaper patterns. And upon this will be layered starkly captured graphite drawings. Drawing inspiration from a feminist handbook published and circulated in the ‘60’s, Andrea Bowers has made 10 drawings based directly on “ads” placed within. The graphics are stark, and sometimes hilarious, one featuring a group of women dancing in a circle hands entwined, emulating the Matisse painting Dance. In the famous painting the genitalia of the female dancers is avoided, but in the ‘60’s version it is drawn in darkly, intentionally eliciting the viewers gaze, with the banner stasting above: . In another drawing, Andrea has used a photo of a group of women gazing with wonder at another’s genitalia, her legs spread in the air – apparently at a party at which women would gather to explore the taboo and never-spoken about parts of their own and other’s bodies. In contrast to these drawings are three works, which are photo-realist drawings of pictures that the artist took while at recent feminist marches and rallies. -

In celebration of the thirty-fifth anniversary of our walking tours, the Los Angeles Conservancy is revisiting our first-ever offering: a self-guided tour from 1978 called Would You Believe L.A.? The tour map included fifty-nine different sites in the historic core of downtown, providing the basis for the Conservancy’s first three docent-led tours. These three tours still take place regularly: Pershing Square Landmarks (now Historic Downtown), Broadway Historic Theatre District (now Broadway Theatre and Commercial District), and Palaces of Finance (now Downtown Renaissance). In the years since Would You Believe L.A.? was created and the first walking tours began, downtown Los Angeles has undergone many changes. -

A City of [ PART 1 OF 2 ] Theatres By Marc Wanamaker n Noted theatre historian Marc Wanamaker is Hynda’s guest columnist this month. Part two continues next month. t is not generally known, but Los Angeles was one of the largest Itheatre towns in the United States dating back to the 19th cen- tury. Beginning with legitimate stages and later cinema theatres, Los Angeles boasted more than several thousand theatres sprawl- ing throughout the entire Los Angeles area by the 1920s. Every main street in every town had a theatre on it, and by the time movies came to Los Angeles there were even more built that were bigger and better. Los Angeles had a grand legitimate theatre history since the mid-19th century as described by famed stage and film actor Hobart Bosworth, who worked in several of the downtown theatres in the 1880s and 1890s. Bosworth described the theatre world of Los Angeles as “surprisingly robust and patronized by thousands of residents who were knowledgeable about the plays and players.” Los Angeles had its first semi-permanent stage, an open-air cov- ered platform with a proscenium arch near the Plaza in 1848, but the most important theater to be built in Los Angeles was the 1,200-seat Ozro Childs Grand Opera House, built in 1884 on Main Street near First. From the mid-1880s, Los Angeles became a regular stop for touring theatrical companies, starring some of the world’s most illustrious stars including Sarah Bernhardt, Maurice Barrymore, Lillian Russell, Anna Held and Lionel Barrymore, among many others. -
