Ocampo105 Recensiones115 COLABORAN EN ESTE NÚMERO Miguel Ángel Larrio es arqueólogo, licenciado en la especialidad de Prehistoria de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Ha realizado numerosas excavaciones, tanto en España como en el extranjero, y ha sido becario colaborador del Departamento de Prehistoria de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. En la actualidad realiza su investigación sobre el comercio púnico en el Mediterráneo occidental. Carlos Martínez-Valverde es contralmirante de la Armada. Prolífico autor, sus apor taciones a la Historia Marítima española, tanto en la Revista General de Marina como en la REVISTA DE HISTORIA NAVAL, son sobradamente conocidas. Ha presentado, asi mismo, trabajos, tanto de temas históricos como de actualidad, en diversas publicacio nes de índole especializada, colaborando también en la elaboración de la Enciclopedia General del Mar. No es posible dejar de mencionar también su faceta como ameno conferenciante. José Luis Infiesta Pérez ha venido firmando sus trabajos con el seudónimo de «Alcofar Nassaesx’. Publicista naval e investigador tenaz, se ha dedicado al estudio de la guerra civil española, 1936-1939, especialmente en sus aspectos menos conocidos, aquellos en los que intervinieron personas y fuerzas extranjeras. Ha publicado nume rosos librps y artículos sobre la materia y colabora con asiduidad con la revista Historia y Vida, entre otras publicaciones. Juan M. Blas y Osorio es capitán de navío del Cuerpo General de la Armada, Jefe del Departamento de Cultura del Instituto de Historia y Cultura Naval hasta 1987. Especialista en Electricidad y Comunicaciones, tuvo diversos mandos en la mar y en tierra. Licenciado en Derecho por la Universidad Complutense, colabora en distintas publicaciones sobre temas navales. Jorge Ortiz Sotelo es capitán de fragata de la Marina peruana. Pertenece al Instituto de Estudios Histórico-Marítimos del Perú, es secretario permanente de los simposios de Historia Marítima y Naval Iberoamericana y miembro fundador de «Talassia» (Asociación Iberoamericana de Historia Naval). Dirige la revista Derroteros del Mar del Sur y es autor de numerosas publicaciones histórico-navales y activo conferen ciante en diversos foros de España y de América. Francisco Javier Díaz González es profesor de Historia del Derecho en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. Ha desempeñado el profesorado en el área de su especialidad, realizado programas de investigación e impartido un curso sobre «Especialización de fuentes y patrimonio documental» organizado por el Fondo Social Europeo y la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, en 1995. Asistente, conferenciante y ponente en diversos actos culturales y congresos, principalmente en el área del cono cimiento de la Historia del Derecho y de las Instituciones. Tiene en prensa la publica ción del artículo «Las Reales Chancillerías en la época del conde-duque de Olivares» en el Anuario de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Alcalá. NOTA EDITORIAL Acorde con los objetivos de la REVISTA, que son esencialmente destacar los valores de la historiografía naval en sus variadas facetas y encuadres, nuestro número 53 se mueve en este marco, en un intento de cubrir los amplios flancos de la investigación y el ensayo. De aquí las diferentes ópticas con las que se encaran los trabajos de fondo: Un, grupo de ánforas del Museo Naval de Madrid, del arqueólogo Miguel Angel Larrio; Don Pacual Cervera en Filipinas. Valor disciplina y lealtad, del contralmirante Martínez- Valverde; Las peripecias del mercante inglés Lake Lugano durante la guerra civil espa ñola, del investigador José Luis Infiesta; Notas para la salida de S. M. Alfonso XIII de España, del capitán de navío Blas y Osorio; Identidad Nacional: crio llos al servicio de la Armada peruana durante la emancipación, del historia dor peruano Jorge Ortiz Sotelo, y Don Fadrique de Toledo, capitán general de la Armada del mar océano, del historiador español Francisco J. Díaz González, Todos abordan desde distintas perspectivas aspectos sustanciales de diferentes temáticas. Las secciones fijas de «La historia vivida», «La Historia Marítima en el mundo» y las «Noticias Generales» cumplen también sus objetivos propuestos, imponiendo la necesaria continuidad a unos espacios tradicionales cuya habi tualidad es su mejor pasavante, mientras que el «Documento» y las «Recensiones» personalizan las constantes de un molde definidor en una impronta continuada. En este año de 1996, casi vísperas del recuerdo centenario de aconteci mientos que dejaron honda huella en la historia patria, la REVISTA DE HISTORIA NAVAL sigue, en aras de su propia identidad, dispuesta a prestar atención pre ferente a todo esfuerzo tendente a revitalizar su configuración formativa al mejor servicio de la historiografía del mar. UN GRUPO DE ÁNFORAS DEL MUSEO NAVAL DE MADRID (*) Miguel Ángel LARRIO Arqueólogo Nos ocupamos en esta nota de tres ánforas procedentes de nuestro litoral, que conserva en exposición el Museo Naval de Madrid (1). Se trata de unos ejemplares aislados que carecen completamente de contexto arqueológico al ser extraídos del litoral sin una excavación sistemática. (1) Dentro de los materiales arqueológicos expuestos en el Museo habría que incluir un ánfo ra púnica del tipo Mañá D, de la que tuvimos ocasión expresa de ocuparnos en un artículo anterior (cfr. LuRIo, M. A.: «Un ánfora púnica inédita del tipo Mañá D del Museo Naval (Madrid)», en Revista de Historia Naval, 46, Madrid, 1994, pp. 5 3-62), al tratarse de un ejemplar con especial• interés y por pertenecer a otro ámbito cultural que las ánforas que nos ocupan en la presente nota. Año 1996 7 MIGUEL ÁNGEL LARRIO Dimensiones: Altura, 75 cm; cuello, 14 cm; asas, 15 cm; pivote, 12 cm. Procedencia: Desconocida. Descripción: Se trata de un ánfora con el cuello fracturado, pero conser vando en algunas partes el arranque del labio, por lo que su cuello debió de ser poco desarrollado. Sus asas, que se unen al cuello muy cerca del labio median te una curva brusca, son aplastadas, rectas y surcadas en su sentido longitudi nal por una ranura no muy pronunciada. La panza es ovoide y remata en su parte inferior en un pivote bien resaltado y de aspecto macizo. Su pasta es de tacto duro, de color amarillento pálido y el engobe rojizo- amarillento. Dimensiones: Altura, 55 cm; anchura máxima, 35 cm; longitud del pivote, 10,5 cm. Procedencia: Desconocida. Descripción: Este ánfora conserva tan sólo el cuerpo y el pivote, ya que ha perdido el cuello y las asas (conserva únicamente el arranque de éstas). Es un claro ejemplo de ánfora reutilizada, pues se observa que la zona del hombro, donde arrancarían el cuello y las asas, ha sido perfectamente limada, no con servando rebaba que indique una fractura brusca o poco cuidada. El cuerpo se asemeja a la forma de una peonza, disminuyendo progresivamente su anchura conforme desciende hacia el pivote. Este es largo y macizo.

    THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR - NAVAL BATTLE OF SANTIAGO DE CUBA BY: FRANCIS T, SIGISMONTI On February 18, 1898 the USS Maine was torpedoed and sunk with a loss of over two hundred men. Realizing war was imminent the American Fleet had started prep- arations for a conflict as early as January. After the sinking of the Maine, the fleet was ordered to Key West, Florida under the command of Admiral William T. Sampson. Two months later, April twenty-second, President McKinley or- dered a blockade of all major Cuban ports which two days later the Spanish answered with a declaration of war. We reciprocated the next day. The prime objective of the Navy was the Spanish Fleet under Ad- miral Pascual Cervera y Topete. This Spanish Fleet prevented any sort of force from crossing the ninety mile span from Florida to Cuba to engage the Spanish land forces then occupying the area known as the Province of Cienfuegos which included Havana. Another reason for the United States’ concern over Cervera’s fleet was the fact that the entire east coast of the United States was open to attack. In this case they were mistaken as the south- ern portion was closely guarded by the Flying Squadron under Com- modore Schley and the northern portion was too far to travel with- out a suitable means of refueling. An attack on New York City for instance would have been suicide as all their coal would have been expended just getting there. Soon after the blockade was set up in Havana harbor, Commodore Schley met Admiral Sampson to discuss such matters as the disper- sion of ships, blockade procedures and the necessary communications with the Cuban insurgents.

    The USB Maine Conspiracy Kenneth C. Wenzer ur interpretation and understanding Oof the explosion of the USB Maine in 1898 has long centered on the cause—either by an external mine or internal spontaneous coal combustion—but not on how that determination was made at the time. A fuller review of the evidence, and across a wider range of records, compels us to take a new tack and explore the motivations and actions behind the official determination of the source of detonation. How did the investigations proceed, and were they fair and exhaustive? If not, did the key participants have ulterior motives behind their actions and decisions? This article claims that Capt. Charles D. Sigsbee, Consul Charles D. Sigsbee was captain of the USB Maine. General Fitzhugh Lee, President William McKinley, and the U.S. naval officer corps concluded, after hurried and flawed investigations, that an external explosion from a mine was the source of ignition, and that they colluded in a conspiracy to cover up the true cause of that sad event. Careful review of the primary documents supports this interpretation of the participants’ unethical motivations. This research entailed using various kinds of official naval and federal correspondence, private collections, newspapers, and articles written by the major participants, among other sources of contemporary information. The key repositories for these materials are the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC. Su padre, de Medina Sidonia, pose- ía tierras de labor, cortijos propios y era un prospero comerciante en vinos, su madre era oriunda de Villamartín, emparentada con los Topete de profesión marinos de Morón de la Frontera. De hecho un tío suyo por rama materna, el almirante Juan Bautista Topete y Carballo fue el que en el puerto de Cádiz a bordo de la fragata Zaragoza proclamó la revolución de "la Gloriosa". En 1852, con trece años Pascual Cervera Topete ingresa en el Colegio Naval militar de San Fernan- do, obteniendo la carta-orden de guardiamarina en 1855. Después de 15 travesías en diferentes buques de la Armada, en cuatro años de guardiamarina con destinos en Cuba y en la campaña de África entre otros, a los veintiún años le conceden los galones de Alférez de navío, incluso con unos meses de adelanto. A continuación es destinado a Filipinas en 1860, donde participa en la campaña de Mindanao y el asalto a las costas de Pagalugan, que le vale el ascenso a Teniente de navío.
