Steers to £1300 Heifers to £1160

Friday saw a further strong trade with a very decent top of £1300 given for a single Simmental steer (22m) from Robert & Janet Legg of Exeter whilst a pair of similar, slightly younger sorts off the same farm sold well at £1250 apiece. Other forward Simmental bullocks ran to £1250 (25m) for Cyril Emmett of Aylesbeare and £1240 (24m) for John & Helen Keep of also Limousin steers (20m) from Brian Vallance, rose to £1290 and £1250 and Blue’s (30m) made £1260, again for Cyril Emmett. Several quality Charolais cattle on offer, headed by Phillip Vennelle, Brixham with a cracking trio (18m) reaching £1220 a head, Michael Vooght of seeing his best (at only 14m) to £1190 and an eye catching bunch from Michael Tooze, Broadsands hitting £1185. A pen of three rangy Fleckvieh steers (25m) saw £1100 for Robert Shilston of whilst a group of five Angus steers (20m) looked as dear as anything sold on the day at £1085 a life for John Hampton of Lustleigh. The better of a couple of bunches of Charolais (22m) from Phillip Vennelle topped the heifer section, making £1160 apiece with his other lot seeing £1110, these were closely followed by Hereford females (29m) from Cyril Emmett at £1095 and £1020. Steven North of Morchard Bishop sold his best, a Simmental heifer (19m) for £1055, also a Limousin heifer (21m) again looked good money at £1020 for John Hampton. Classy Blonde females (20m) fetched £900 for Clifford Squire of Coryton. A small entry forward for our monthly beef suckler sale still produced some excellent results with a young Limousin cow with her Heifers calf (4m) fetching £1300 for RT Chisholm, Way Village with a Devon sold with her Limousin x bull calf at foot realised £1240 for Curtis Bowden of Avonwick and a Hereford with Charolais steer (7m) running beside her was sold for £1110 for Robert & Janet Phipps of Exbourne.

45 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935

A smaller entry this week met a strong trade throughout. Steers from MJ Rowswell of Musbury topped at £775 for Limousin crosses (9m) with others realising £760, Trevor & Martine Snell of Sidmouth showed their usual quality sorts with the best hitting £770 for Charolais cross steers (9m), with Angus steers from the same vendor realising £745 (10m). Guy Sellick of attained £650 for the best of his run (11m). British Shorthorns from Vooght Bros of Luton, hit £535, whilst young (6m) Simmental cross steers from Graham Winzer & family of Loddiswell achieved £430 for a bunch of five. Heifers from Trevor & Martine Snell topped at £650 for Simmental crosses (10m), whilst Charolais crosses from the same vendor attained £590.

An improved entry saw a much stronger trade Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE particularly for the better sorts! Top of the day was British Blue 16 388 289 11 325 245 £395 for a Charolais bull from Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of . A good run of British Blue bulls Limousin 7 385 278 7 182 129 from Paul Brimacombe & family of Yeoford sold to Charolais 1 395 395 1 262 262 £388, £365 (x2) & £355 with others to £345 for South Devon Messrs Roberts & Phillips of Dulverton. Limousin bulls 2 375 360 2 225 163 sold to £385 for Messrs Higgin of Totnes, £352 for Devon 3 95 69 2 125 108 Messrs L & M Coles of Sidbury and £295 for Alf Harris Aberdeen Angus 13 310 166 8 160 117 & Son of Tiverton. South Devon bulls to £375 & £345 for Charles Mudge of . Aberdeen Angus Hereford 3 145 128 bulls to £310 for Derek Burrough of . Holstein / Friesian 5 85 51 Heifer calves topped at £325 for a smart British Blue from Messrs RH & MJ Hurford with others to £285, £282 & £270 for Paul Brimacombe & family and £285 for Messrs L & M Coles. Charolais heifers to £262 for Mr C Alford of . Only a small handful of Friesians with the best to £85 for Steve Loud of Colyton.

Another similar entry saw a much improved, flying trade and many more could have been sold to advantage! Top of the day was £1950 for a super non-pedigree heifer from David & Sherrie Turner of Torrington. Other heifers sold to £1720 for a smart Montbeliarde heifer from Ken & Cathie Cottey of Whimple who sold another Monty at £1420 and a British Friesian at £1550. Norwegian Red heifers sold at £1580 for Messrs JJ Palfrey & Co of Dartmouth. Cows were an excellent trade and a cracking British Friesian second calver by Lakemead Rancher sold well at £1750 for Richard & Heather Gibson of Tiverton. An Ayrshire cross second calver sold exceptionally well at £1600 for Messrs Crudge & Shere of Chard who also sold a two fifth calvers at £1350 & £1300.

38 ORPHAN LAMBS

A large line-up of 38 orphan lambs rose to £28 (x2) for Keith & Christine Morish of Cheriton Bishop, £26 for Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick, £24 (x6) for DJ & SL Kittow of Tiverton and no less 12 lambs sold at £22 for five separate vendors. Average up £7 to £19.16.

1588 STORE HOGGS

A pleasing entry of store hoggs sold in front of a strong crowd of buyers representing some of the largest hogg finishers in the country, with hoggs going to Cheshire, the Midlands, South Wales, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire, many of whom were having hoggs out of Exeter for the first time. Best forward hoggs rose to £91.50, £87 & £78 for a mixture of Texel, Dorset & Suffolk cross mules from Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton, £85 & £84.50 for smart coated Charollais sired hoggs from Dennis Tapp of Rackenford, £85 & £78.50 for strong shorn Suffolk crosses from Derek Reddaway of Harberton and £84 for Berrichon crosses from Mark Blake of Plymouth. More forward sorts at £82.50 & £80.50 for Bradley Bowden of , £81 for Keith Rowell of Crockernwell and £80.50 for both Jeff Harvey of Bovey Tracey and WR Uren of Blackawton. Plenty of others £75 to £79.50, whilst mediums ranged from £64 to £74 and smalls traded from £45 to £62 depending on breeding. Hill hoggs in demand too with the vast majority in the £40’s & £50’s and very few less than that. Overall average was up £3.80 on last week to £64.50.

34 GRAZING & BREEDING EWES

Grazers sold to £75 & £73 for Suffolk crosses from Ed Brook of Doddiscombleigh and £72 for Dorset’s from Jack Frankum of Whitestone. Others £44 to £65.

167 EWES & 226 LAMBS (393 LIVES)

A big show of couples for the last week of January sold to a larger crowd of buyers who were slightly keener than recently seen, in line with the slight improvement in the weather, at least for a few hours! Doubles to £185 for FM Dorset’s from Oryn Easterbrook of who also had singles with the same comments at £132 (x2) & £128. More doubles at £172 for FM Lleyn’s from Chris & Alison Crudge of Tiverton who had FM/BM singles at £130 and further doubles at £170 for Steve Parish of . Next up at £168 & £162 was Derek Cole of who sold nice singles at £140 (x2), £132 (x2) & £128 and closely followed by David & Adrian Cole of Bradninch with singles at £138 & £134. A large number of second quality sorts on offer trading from £28 to £45 per life.

265 PIGS – 10.15AM Auctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133

Another really good entry of pigs saw the ‘store pigs’ lead the day with plenty of buyers keen to purchase.

81 CULL SOWS A large entry of quality sows saw a full compliment of buyers competing but very much to a limited price. Some wonderful sows on offer topped at £100 both for Richard Dunning of Drewsteignton and Andrew Freemantle of Kennford. Chris Down of Budleigh saw the best of his twenty-five at £87, a price matched by Nigel Tope of Blackawton twice. Medium weight sows (200- 225kg) from Timmy Stockwell topped at £80 with others from WA Thomas of St Just, west Cornwall hitting £76.

119 PRIME PIGS Good numbers and to be quite honest, compared to some other markets, a ‘good trade.’ Topping the day was a very smart run of forty from SG Jose & Son of Launceston which topped at £95 (x12) with others in from Messrs Bridgman of at £88. A lorry-load of heavyweight native pigs from Chyvarloe Farms near Helston sold to a top of £85 with regular supporter Colin Gibbins of Feniton at £84. It was pleasing to see six abattoirs and independent butchers competing well with an overall average on the day of a respectable £85.90.

65 STORE PIGS

Something for everyone on Friday with new buyers out in force pushing the top end to a very positive trade. Top call of the day was £50 for the best of a smart run from Messrs Wakeham & Turner of with others at £44 and £43 from the same farm. Messr Chyvarloe Farms made the 170 mile round trip with twenty-four white weaners (5-6 weeks) and topped at £43 with others at £41, £40 and £32. Younger stores went off to their new home in south east Cornwall at £30 (x6) for Messrs Vallis & Son of Bradnich with very little less than £25.
