Tenth U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering 1210NCE Frontiers of Earthquake Engineering IMPROVING THE SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF DIAGRID STEEL STRUCTURES USING FRICTION MASS DAMPER Garlan Ramadhan1 and André R. Barbosa2 ABSTRACT The steel diagrid structural system is a recent load bearing and lateral resisting structural system for tall building structures that is relatively unexplored in the western United States. One possible reason for the little use of diagrid systems in earthquake prone regions is the lack of guidelines and application examples illustrating the design and analysis of these structures. In this work, a prototype building with 72 stories is used as an example for which the design and analysis of the diagrid system is performed. Friction mass dampers are provided at the top of the building to mitigate the possible large displacement and base shear demands that these structures may undergo under seismic events. Using a nonlinear finite element model of the mass damper, which is connected to a linear model of the building structure, the effectiveness of the friction mass damper system is studied. The mass damper system consists of an additional concrete tank containing sand or water. The tank is placed in between the building reinforce concrete structural core and the exterior steel diagrid system. This mass damper is connected to the structure using friction pendulum system (FPS) isolators, which are chosen due to their ability to undergo large deformations. Parametric studies are carried out to optimize the mass damper design. Optimization of the seismic performance is assessed in terms of minimization of displacements, base shear, and floor accelerations.

One day after being sworn into office with a massive majority, Premier Gordon Campbell announced a 25 percent personal income tax cut, potentially relinquishing one billion dollars in tax revenue. Seven weeks later, Campbell and his Finance Minister followed up with another billion dollars in business and corporate tax cuts.

Marji San Francisco, California May 2019 Copyright by Laura I Marji 2019 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read Multiple Tuned Mass Damper in Tall Buildings by Laura Magi, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Science in Structural/Earthquake Engineering at San Francisco State University. Jenna Wong? Ph.D. Assistant Professor Cheng Chen, Ph.D. Associate Professor MULTIPLE TUNED MASS DAMPER IN TALL BUILDINGS Laura Maiji San Francisco, California 2019 Tall structures are subject to dynamic excitations from wind and seismic loads. In this study, the efficiency of utilizing MTMDs in a 20 story height building are tested with special attention given to the seismic response due to the distribution of TMDs across a given story and through the elevation. The story displacements, shear force, and acceleration results showed that TMDs can dramatically dissipate energy in structures when they are used in groups with various distribution. The study indicates that, firstly, whatever the amount of total TMD mass increases, the reduction in structural dynamic response also increases. Secondly, the vertical distribution of MTMD is more effective in controlling the performance of structures than horizontal distribution, especially under ground motions with short wavelength. And lastly, the most optimum distribution of TMDs is on the floor plan and through the elevation of the model at the same time in order to have the most controlled behavior.

  • Helen and Ted Hughes, Irwin Elman Named Korczak Honourees
For Immediate Release July 4, 2019 HELEN AND TED HUGHES, IRWIN ELMAN NAMED KORCZAK HONOUREES VICTORIA – Three Canadians who have dedicated their lives to public service with a focus on children and youth were honoured recently by the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada during a ceremony at Government House. Helen and Ted Hughes of Victoria jointly received the Janusz Korczak Medal for Children’s Rights Advocacy while former Ontario Child and Youth Advocate Irwin Elman received the Korczak Statuette in Recognition of Caring for Children. The awards were presented by B.C. Representative for Children and Youth Jennifer Charlesworth and Korczak Association President Jerry Nussbaum during the ceremony hosted by Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin. Janusz Korczak was a Polish-Jewish author and pediatrician, best known for his selfless heroism in 1942 when, as an orphanage director in Warsaw, he refused offers of freedom and accompanied the children in his care to a Nazi extermination camp. In the spirit of Korczak, who is widely recognized as the father of the international child rights movement, the awards honour outstanding contributions to the promotion of the rights of children in ways that encourage love for children, listening to children, fostering healthy children’s lives, and building capacities in children. Helen Hughes was an elected councilor on city councils in both Saskatoon and Victoria. She spent decades supporting community and philanthropic organizations that benefit children, youth, families and Indigenous people. After moving with Ted to Victoria in 1980, she worked with both the Ombudsman’s Office and then the B.C. Council of Human Rights.

  • Seismic Performance of Diagrid Steel Structures Using Single and Double Friction Mass Dampers
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Garlan Ramadhan for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering presented on December 13, 2013 Title: Seismic Performance of Diagrid Steel Structures Using Single and Double Friction Mass Dampers Abstract approved: André R. Barbosa The steel diagrid structural system is a recent load bearing and lateral resisting structural system for tall building structures that is relatively unexplored in the western United States. One possible reason for the little use of diagrid systems in earthquake prone regions is the lack of guidelines and application examples illustrating the design and analysis of these structures. In this work, a prototype building with 72 stories is used as an example for which the design and analysis of the diagrid system is performed. To mitigate the possible large displacement and base shear demands that these structures may undergo under seismic events, two new design solutions consisting of one or two friction tuned mass damper (TMD) units are explored. In the first solution, a TMD is placed on the top four stories of the building and is tuned to reduce the contribution of the fundamental mode of vibration of the structure. The second solution uses a double TMD system, in which a second TMD unit – tuned to the second period of the structure – is added at mid-height of the building. Using a nonlinear finite element model of the tuned mass damper, the effectiveness of the friction mass damper design is studied. The mass damper system consists of a concrete tank containing sand or water. The tank is placed in between the building reinforce concrete structural core and the exterior steel diagrid system.
