During the First World War the Clyde, and its surrounding area, became an epicentre of ship building and munitions factories. In parallel with these progressions, the area also became the centre of Glasgow’s Labour movement. Male workers on the Clyde were increasingly involved in political activity, such as strikes, rallies and trade unionism. Until recently the role of women within this period of history has been somewhat overlooked.

  • Bairns Not Bombs: the Scottish Peace Movement and the British Nuclear State
This is a peer-reviewed, accepted author manuscript of the following chapter: Eschle, C. (2016). Bairns not bombs: the Scottish peace movement and the British nuclear state. In A. Futter (Ed.), The United Kingdom and the Future of Nuclear Weapons (Weapons of Mass Destruction). Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.. Chapter 10. ‘Bairns not Bombs’: The Scottish Peace Movement and the UK Nuclear Weapons State Catherine Eschle Introduction Mobilisation against nuclear weapons in Scotland is surprisingly under-researched. While historians, sociologists and the like have agreed that peace movements are “best studied within their national framework”, given their intimate interrelation with a national politics of defence,1 these scholars have also tended to assume that nation and state in the UK are coterminous and homogenous. For example, as Christopher Hill points out, studies of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) have failed markedly to pay attention to … the complexities of ‘the nation’ and of territorial politics within the UK and within anti-nuclear organising; instead ‘the nation’ tends to be based on and extrapolated from the politics of a group of intellectuals associated with the New Statesman in London.2 For Hill, this does a disservice to the vibrant localism of CND in England in the 1960s and 80s,3 as well as seriously misrepresenting the trajectory and significance of anti-nuclear activism in Wales and Scotland.4 In that light, this chapter offers a preliminary account of anti-nuclear/peace campaigning5 in Scotland and its

THE LABOUR LEFT PATRICK SEYD Ph. D. DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL THEORY AND INSTITUTIONS Vol-- SUBMITTED JUNE 1986 -252- CHAPTER SIX DEMOCRACY IN THE PARTY(2): The Rank and File Mobilising Committee and electing the Party leadership Two days after the decision, at the 1979 Party conference to introduce reselection CLPD issued a newsletter to conference delegates entitled 'The Fight for Democracy Must Go On' in which it stated that "the rank and file must organise to defend, secure and advance the gains already achieved".(1) It's first object was to defend the new reselection procedures from a Right wing counter attack but it also intended to advance the constitutional reforms by removing the PLP's sole right to elect the Party Leader and by establishing the NEC's right to have final responsibility for the Party's election manifesto. We have already examined in the previous chapter the campaign to introduce automatic reselection procedures and we now consider the campaign to advance the Party reforms in these other areas. This campaign to further extend the accountability of the parliamentarians to the Party activists resulted in a single, organised Labour Left grouping which brought together as an alliance a wide range of groups which had previously developed their own strategies and had sometimes been in open conflict. -253- The Rank and File Mobilising Committee In May 1980 the Rank and File Mobilising Committee (hereafter RFMC) was established to defend the constitutional reforms agreed by the 1979 Party conference and to campaign for additional Party reforms. The Left feared that the Party leadership, in alliance with certain trade union leaders, and encouraged by the majority of political commentators, would deflect and defeat the demands for constitutional reform.
