Although the Socialist Party increased their representation by two compared with 1984, their support was less than that achieved i11 the 1987 general election. The new grouping led by Valery Giscard d'Estaing emerged with the largest number of votes while the Centre Party led by Simone Veil, whicl1 in 1984 stood as part of a single list, lost support. The Communist decline continues as they are overtaken by the Greens and the National Front vote holds.
