  • Dialect and Local Media: Reproducing the Multi- Dialectal Hierarchical Space in Limburg (The Netherlands)
Dialect and local media: Reproducing the multi- dialectal hierarchical space in Limburg (the Netherlands) Leonie Cornips i, ii , Vincent de Rooij iii , Irene Stengs i ii and Lotte Thissen i Meertens Institute/The Royal Academy of Art and Sciences, Amsterdam; ii Maastricht University; iii University of Amsterdam The Netherlands 1 INTRODUCTION This chapter aims at contributing to an understanding of processes of language standardization by looking at a multidialectal public live performance, broadcast by local media in the Dutch province of Limburg. We will focus on this live perfor- mance, which involves a reading-aloud event of extracts from the fantasy book series Harry Potter . For this event, extracts were translated in written form into various Limburgian dialects. These translations obeyed the normative dialect or- thography acknowledged by the most important main actors in Limburg (see later). 2 The imposition of a normative spelling for dialects evidences processes of codifica- tion and implementation, two major stages in language standardization (cf. Deumert 2004, Haugen 2003, Milroy 2001). These ongoing processes in Limburg result in the standardization of multiple dialects that differ maximally from each other, espe- cially at the level of the lexicon. These processes also anchor the multiple dialects to place. Language standardization involves concern with form and function, and is based on as well as framed by ‘discursive projects’: Standardization is concerned with linguistic forms (corpus planning, i.e. selec- tion and codification) as well as the social and communicative functions of lan- guage (status planning, i.e. implementation and elaboration). In addition, stand- ard languages are also discursive projects, and standardization processes are typ- ically accompanied by the development of specific discourse practices.

  • Transformations of Trade Unionism Work Around the Globe: Historical Comparisons and Connections
Transformations of Trade Unionism Work Around the Globe: Historical Comparisons and Connections Open Access Book Series of the International Institute of Social History (IISH) Most human beings work, and growing numbers are exposed to labour markets. These markets are increasingly globally competitive and cause both capital and labour to move around the world. In search of the cheapest labour, industries and service-based enterprises move from West to East and South, but also, for example, westwards from China’s east coast. People move from areas with few employment opportunities to urban and industrial hubs, both between and within continents. However, labour relations have been shifting already for centuries, labour migrations go back far in time, and changing labour relations cannot be comprehended without history. Therefore, understanding these developments and their consequences in the world of work and labour relations requires sound historical research, based on the experiences of diffferent groups of workers in diffferent parts of the world at diffferent moments in time, throughout human history. The research and publications department of the International Institute of Social History (IISH) has taken on a leading role in research and publishing on the global history of labour relations. In the context of Global Labour History, three central research questions have been defijined: (1) What labour relations have emerged in parallel with the rise and advance of market economies? (2) How can their incidence (and consequently the transition from one labour relation to another) be explained, and are these worldwide transitions interlinked? (3) What are the social, economic, political, and cultural consequences of their changing incidence, and how do they relate to forms of individual and collective agency among workers? These three questions are interconnected in time, but also in space.

  • Holocene Alluvial Sediment Deposition in Contrasting Environments in Northwestern Europe
298 Sediment Dynamics in Changing Environments (Proceedings of a symposium held in Christchurch, New Zealand, December 2008). IAHS Publ. 325, 2008. Holocene alluvial sediment deposition in contrasting environments in northwestern Europe B. NOTEBAERT & G. VERSTRAETEN Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, K.U. Leuven, Celestijnenlaan 200E, B-3001 Leuven, Belgium [email protected] Abstract The total mass of Holocene alluvial sediment storage was estimated for three Belgian catchments (Dijle, Gulp and Amblève), with areas ranging between 47 and 1070 km2. The Dijle and Gulp catchments have comparable, rather intensive, land-use histories, while the land use in the Amblève catchment is less intensive and developed more recently. Topography is more pronounced in the Amblève catchment and more gentle in the Dijle catchment. In total, 1070 hand augerings were made to study fluvial deposition at 96 cross-sections across the flood plain. Average flood-plain deposition masses for the different catchments were calculated at different spatial scales. The results show that alluvial sediment storage is much higher for the Dijle catchment (464 103 Mg/km2 catchment area) compared to the Gulp (128 103 Mg/km2) and Amblève catchment (33 103 Mg/km2). Comparison with other data from West European catchments shows that alluvial sediment storage is much larger for the Dijle catchment, while that for the Amblève is very low. These differences between catchments can be attributed to their land-use history. Land use plays a role in both the soil erosion rates and in the sediment transport towards the fluvial system. Radiocarbon dating results for the Dijle flood plain indicate that major changes in land use are responsible for changing flood plain sedimentation.

  • Discharge, Distance to the Source, and Floodplain Geometry
Sediment and the Environment (Proceedings of the Baltimore Symposium, May 1989) IAHS Publ. no. 184, 1989. Metal dispersal in the fluvial system of the River Geul: The role of discharge, distance to the source, and floodplain geometry H. Leenaers Department of Geography, State University of Utrecht P.O. Box 80. 115, 3508 TC Utrecht, The Netherlands M. C. Rang Department of Works, Province of Limburg P. O. Box 5700, 6202 MA Maastricht, The Netherlands ABSTRACT Due tö mining activities in the past, the floodplain soils of the river Geul are severely polluted with heavy metals, especially lead, zinc and cadmium. In the present situation, two active sources of heavy metals are recognized. Older floodplain sediments, which have been contaminated by the disposal of solid waste, are reworked and continue to function as a major source of heavy metals during floods. Erosion and leaching of spoil heaps that are still present along the channel and on the river banks are additional sources of heavy metals. As a result of an increased activity of these sources during flood events, for at-a-station measurements only a weak nega tive relation was found between river discharge and metal concentra tions of suspended sediments. However, downstream observations rêveal an exponential decay of metal concentrations that is due to dilution with relatively clean bed, bank and hillslppe material. Moreover, differences in geochemical mobility and specific density may cause ; metal-specific decay rates during low flow conditions. During flood events suspended sediments are deposited in the floodplain area. Local floodplain characteristics such as inundation frequency and geomorphology reflect a spatial pattern of soil pollution that con sists of local deviations from the general, exponential decay pat tern.
