HMNZS NGAPONA HISTORY One of the prime objects of the Ngapona Assn is to "encourage an interest in the history of Ngapona and maintain a permanent record". We held a meeting last Friday and have formed a History Team. One of the first jobs for the team is to muster all available photographic material and sort into cronological order. We will then record, digitise and store the photographs. The vision of the final product is that there will be a photo album containing the ship's company photographs on an annual basis. Within the album for that year will be other photographs pertaining to events that have occurred, the people concerned, and any other photos that have historical significance.

    “Soldier an' Sailor too ” October 1664 E. J.Sparrow 1 PREFACE On the occasion of the Royal Marines 350 th Birthday perhaps it is worth listing some of their achievements. This booklet takes the form of a day by day diary covering the variety of tasks they have undertaken. A few dates are chosen to show the diversity of the tasks undertaken and the variety of locations where marines have served. Over the course of time they have acquired a remarkable reputation. Their loyalty to the Sovereign is only surpassed by that to their mates. They have fought all over the Globe from Murmansk in the Arctic in 1919 to the Antarctic in more recent years. They fought in desert, jungle and in snow. At sea they have fought in every sort of vessel from battleship to canoe on the surface and also operated below the waves. They have flown in action both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. They rode into battle on horses and camels plus used reindeer and mules as pack animals. When tragedy strikes be it earthquake, deadly diseases like Ebola, volcano, flooding or fire they have appeared to help with the relief. The Government has used them to cover for striking firemen or control displaced Scottish crofters. The UN has used their services in Peace keeping roles. Several British regiments from the Grenadier Guards to some of the Light Infantry are proud to have served as marines and old enemies like the US and Dutch marines are now the firmest of friends. The Royal Marines have a saying that at the end of their life they cross the harbour bar.

  • The British Destroyer
    THE BRITISH DESTROYER A HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION During the 20th Century, the British destroyer was the workhorse of the fleet, generally fast and suitable for a variety of roles. The first destroyers were strictly Torpedo Boat Destroyers (TBDs); that is, they were designed to destroy German Torpedo1 Boats. The type developed into a Torpedo Boat itself, with the dual role of attacking the enemy with torpedoes and of beating back similar attacks made by enemy destroyers. With the introduction of submarine warfare, the destroyer also took on the role of screening the fleet against submarine attack and, from 1917, convoy escort as well as some being fitted as minelayers. Destroyer became the common name used from 1925. The earliest were ‘small ships’ indeed and the first British TBD was HMS Havock, launched in 1893. From 1950 new destroyers were more akin to the ‘light cruisers’ of old. Since 1960 new destroyers would be hardly recognisable to destroyermen of the Second World War and some were almost the size of ‘heavy cruisers’. The latest type of destroyer in the Royal Navy is a large ship indeed: the Daring class (Type 45) is 7,350 tonnes and 500 feet in length, comparable to a Leander class cruiser of the 1930s but, with a complement of 190, just over one-third of the cruiser’s 550 men!     H050.1 Naval Action in the Korean War, 25 June to 1 September 1950 Sam Cox, Director of Naval History, 20 June 2020 North Korean Offensive – 25 June 1950. At 0400 on Sunday morning 25 June 1950, an armored brigade and six divisions of 89,000 soldiers of th the North Korean People’s Army (NKPA) in four main avenues of attack poured crossed the 38 ​ Parallel ​ marking the boundary between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea.) Spearheaded by about 200 Soviet-supplied T-34 tanks and 120 fighter and ground attack aircraft along with heavy artillery and with the advantage of tactical surprise, the North Koreans quickly routed the 38,000 Republic of Korea (ROK) troops in the forward area, who had no tanks, no anti-tank weapons, no air support, not much training, and no warning. The armored rd th brigade and two NKPA infantry divisions (the 3 ​ and 4 D​ ivisions,) with two divisions in reserve, headed ​ ​ th th st directly toward the ROK capital of Seoul, only 30 miles south of the 38 ​ Parallel. The 6 ​ and 1 ​ NKPA ​ th ​ ​ Infantry Divisions attacked further west before funneling into Seoul, while the 7 ​ Infantry Division th ​ attacked through the central mountains and the 5 ​ Infantry Division attacked southward on the highway ​ along the ROK east coast on the Sea of Japan (East Sea to the Koreans.) Although there had been strategic intelligence warning that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Korea in 1948 would risk a Communist North Korean attempt to reunify Korea by force, and there had been extensive warning of the North Korean build-up of strength and capability along the border, the exact timing of the attack still came as a surprise.
