  • The Role of Chinese Labour Corps in Repairing and Maintaining British
Published in Surveying and Built Environment, Vol. 21, Issue 12 (Dec. 2011), 12-20. (ISSN 1816-9554) Chinese Eyes on British Tanks: Historical Verification of a War Heritage Lee Ho Yin ______________________________________________ ABSTRACT This paper is about a British military tradition with a Chinese connection. It has taken the author several years of research to dispel the myth that has long shrouded the true origins of a regimental tradition of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment of the British Army. This tradition is a pair of eyes, known as the "Chinese Eyes," painted on the bows or turrets of British tanks from World War I to the present day. As such, the "Chinese Eyes" can be regarded as an intangible heritage expressed on the tangible hardware of the British Army. Using the research methodology for architectural conservation, the author attempts to rediscover obscured historical evidence, using it to chronologically reconstruct the events leading to the creation of this tradition. KEYWORDS Military heritage, historical research, interpretation, authenticity. Director, Architectural Conservation Programme (ACP), Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong. E-mail: [email protected] 1 INTRODUCTION: METHODOLOGY AND ORIGINS OF RESEARCH It is a little known fact that British tanks, produced in the thousands during World War I, were cared for by the skillful hands of the Chinese Labour Corps.1 Who would have thought that there is such a seemingly improbable connection between Chinese men and British war machines? More incredibly, who would have thought that a Chinese individual – an individual with an indirect link with Hong Kong – was responsible for creating a famous military tradition of British tanks – a pair of eyes, known as the "Chinese Eyes" that have been painted on British tanks since World War I.

  • TWICE a CITIZEN Celebrating a Century of Service by the Territorial Army in London
TWICE A CITIZEN Celebrating a century of service by the Territorial Army in London www.TA100.co.uk The Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Greater London Twice a Citizen “Every Territorial is twice a citizen, once when he does his ordinary job and the second time when he dons his uniform and plays his part in defence.” This booklet has been produced as a souvenir of the celebrations for the Centenary of the Territorial Field Marshal William Joseph Slim, Army in London. It should be remembered that at the time of the formation of the Rifle Volunteers 1st Viscount Slim, KG, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, GBE, DSO, MC in 1859, there was no County of London, only the City. Surrey and Kent extended to the south bank of the Thames, Middlesex lay on the north bank and Essex bordered the City on the east. Consequently, units raised in what later became the County of London bore their old county names. Readers will learn that Londoners have much to be proud of in their long history of volunteer service to the nation in its hours of need. From the Boer War in South Africa and two World Wars to the various conflicts in more recent times in The Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, London Volunteers and Territorials have stood together and fought alongside their Regular comrades. Some have won Britain’s highest award for valour - the Victoria Cross - and countless others have won gallantry awards and many have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country. This booklet may be recognised as a tribute to all London Territorials who have served in the past, to those who are currently serving and to those who will no doubt serve in the years to come.

  • BAOR July 1989
BAOR ORDER OF BATTLE JULY 1989 “But Pardon, and Gentles all, The flat unraised spirits that have dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object….” Chorus, Henry V Act 1, Prologue This document began over five years ago from my frustration in the lack of information (or just plain wrong information) regarding the British Army of The Rhine in general and the late Cold War in particular. The more I researched through books, correspondence, and through direct questions to several “Old & Bold” on Regimental Association Forums, the more I became determined to fill in this gap. The results are what you see in the following pages. Before I begin a list of acknowledgements let me recognize my two co-authors, for this is as much their work as well as mine. “PM” was instrumental in sharing his research on the support Corps, did countless hours of legwork, and never failed to dig up information on some of my arcane questions. “John” made me “THINK” British Army! He has been an inspiration; a large part of this work would have not been possible without him. He added the maps and the color formation signs, as well as reformatting the whole document. I can only humbly say that these two gentlemen deserve any and all accolades as a result of this document. Though we have put much work into this document it is far from finished. Anyone who would like to contribute information of their time in BAOR or sources please contact me at [email protected]. The document will be updated with new information periodically.
