7 THE ARCHER - 08717 334465 APRIL 2009 Local hero returns with hit film By James Luxford One of the most acclaimed British films of 2009 had an early showing at the Phoenix Cinema. Tom Hooper brought his new movie The Damned United, to the Phoenix, taking part in an exclusive Q&A after the screening. Hooper was brought up in Finchley, and directed many of the UK’s most memorable TV series, including Cold Feet, Prime Suspect and episodes of EastEnders, before going to Holly- wood and winning award after award for his work on the Tom Hanks-produced US mini-series John Adams. He has also worked with Helen Mirren on Elizabeth I, and the Golden Globe-winning Longford. DICKENS on SCREEN, BFI Southbank's Unprecedented
PRESS RELEASE 12/08 DICKENS ON SCREEN AT BFI SOUTHBANK IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2012 DICKENS ON SCREEN, BFI Southbank’s unprecedented retrospective of film and TV adaptations, moves into February and March and continues to explore how the work of one of Britain’s best loved storytellers has been adapted and interpreted for the big and small screens – offering the largest retrospective of Dickens on film and television ever staged. February 7 marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth and BFI Southbank will host a celebratory evening in partnership with Film London and The British Council featuring the world premiere of Chris Newby’s Dickens in London, the innovative and highly distinctive adaptation of five radio plays by Michael Eaton that incorporates animation, puppetry and contemporary footage, and a Neil Brand score. The day will also feature three newly commissioned short films inspired by the man himself. Further highlights in February include a special presentation of Christine Edzard’s epic film version of Little Dorrit (1988) that will reunite some of the cast and crew members including Derek Jacobi, a complete screening of the rarely seen 1960 BBC production of Barnaby Rudge, as well as day long screenings of the definitive productions of Hard Times (1977) and Martin Chuzzlewit (1994). In addition, there will be the unique opportunity to experience all eight hours of the RSC’s extraordinary 1982 production of Nicholas Nickleby, including a panel discussion with directors Trevor Nunn and John Caird, actor David Threlfall and its adaptor, David Edgar. Saving some of the best for last, the season concludes in March with a beautiful new restoration of the very rare Nordisk version of Our Mutual Friend (1921) and a two-part programme of vintage, American TV adaptations of Dickens - most of which have never been screened in this country before and feature legendary Hollywood stars. -
Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. My comment at the me was rather along Page 6: For Sale - new items… and the lines of “yes, it’s lovely, but she’d never let me hang it any- my book! where”. Well, a few short years on, I had taken the plunge and bought it online (there’s a link on my website) without even informing my wife; I even got lucky because they had quoted me an out-of-date shipping cost of just £5 which they duly honoured. The canvas itself is about 30” x 26” and it now hangs proudly on my staircase - one can admire it directly ahead whilst walk- ing down the stairs. The view is a composite one. For those who are unfamiliar with the layout of our ground, you can effec- vely draw a horizontal line across the top of the three stands shown bordering the pitch; the huge stand shown at the far end is purely an enormous enlargement of the stand shown directly below it and the trusses and blue rooves adjacent are merely alternave views of the stands at the side of the ground. -
Sherborne School and the Oscars
‘And the Academy Award goes to…’ Sherborne School and the Oscars Sherborne School is currently making its presence felt on the big screen. Not only has the School recently provided the set for two new films, The Imitation Game (2014) and Far from the Madding Crowd (2015), but two Old Shirburnian actors can currently be seen in two hugely successful films, Hugh Bonneville (d 1977-1981) in Paddington (2014) and Charlie Cox (c 1996-2001) in The Theory of Everything (2014). And, of course, Benedict Cumberbatch, himself the son of an Old Shirburnian, is portraying Old Shirburnian Alan Turing (h 1926-1931) in The Imitation Game (2014). The 87th Academy Award nominations for the 2015 Oscars see The Imitation Game (2014) with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, and The Theory of Everything (2014) with one nomination for Best Picture. But we will have to wait until 22 February 2015 to find out who will win a coveted Oscar. Jeremy Irons (b 1962-1966) is the only Old Shirburnian to date known to have won an Oscar. This was for his portrayal of Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune (1990) in which he starred alongside Glenn Close. However, with a number of new films in the pipe line - La Corrispondenza (2015), High-Rise (2015), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Race (2016) – he will no doubt be adding a few more awards to his mantelpiece in the future. It was while he was at Sherborne that Irons first took to the stage, appearing as Mr Puff in the 1966 production of The Critic. -
