Newsletter #32: 1 st July 2018 Another highlight from my collection CONTENTS ALI WHITE HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FC CANVAS Page 1: Collecon Highlight - Ali White HTFC Canvas Page 2: Latest Acquisions - Terri- er money-box, Tschu He li sck- er, Sobhi ‘PRIZM’ card, 2004 FDC, Edito Lampo ‘double’ card and an- other Mooy poster Page 3: Aucon Watch - Len Bu’s kit bag Page 3: I Wish That I Owned This… - ‘Cyrillic’ Panini ‘PRIZM’ card of Mooy Page 4: Other Football Cards - Pluck ‘Famous Football Teams’ (1922) Page 5: Recommended Read - ‘The Damned United’ by David Peace I clearly recall walking past the AC Gallery in Huddersfield with a (2006) friend several years ago and nocing this canvas - among others - in the front window. My comment at the me was rather along Page 6: For Sale - new items… and the lines of “yes, it’s lovely, but she’d never let me hang it any- my book! where”. Well, a few short years on, I had taken the plunge and bought it online (there’s a link on my website) without even informing my wife; I even got lucky because they had quoted me an out-of-date shipping cost of just £5 which they duly honoured. The canvas itself is about 30” x 26” and it now hangs proudly on my staircase - one can admire it directly ahead whilst walk- ing down the stairs. The view is a composite one. For those who are unfamiliar with the layout of our ground, you can effec- vely draw a horizontal line across the top of the three stands shown bordering the pitch; the huge stand shown at the far end is purely an enormous enlargement of the stand shown directly below it and the trusses and blue rooves adjacent are merely alternave views of the stands at the side of the ground. All in all it is a very ‘ busy’ print and is a magnificent sight. And because it is a print composed of photographic elements you might even be able to recognise certain people within it. I know for a fact that the drummer at boom le has been idenfied by his father who subsequently bought one of these as a gi for him. And the cost? I think that I paid around the £120 that is being asked now. Well worth it! hps://huddersfieldtowncollecon.wordpress.com/ 1 Latest acquisitions Lots of cards and sckers are expected over the coming months with Town having been pro- moted to The Greedy League but, for now, here’s a selecon of what else has recently fallen into my lap. Well! Where to start? So many new items fell into my lap this me I don’t know if I’ll have enough room to cover them all properly. First up is the ceramic ‘Terrier’ money-box which I got from eBay ; the vendor had it it up for £22 but I made an offer and got it for just £20 (plus p&p) which was prey good because he had a second one which fetched FORTY pounds a couple of weeks later. Next is the foreign ‘double’ card here of Ray Wilson and Contreras of Chile. I already have a couple of singles of this card but was pleased to get this rare example at the more than reasonable price of £20.00. I have a small collecon of First Day Covers too and had thought that I already own all of the ones featuring Town but it would seem that I didn’t; this one from the 2004 Play- Offs came up on eBay and I snatched it for just £1.49 - bar- gain! Aaron Mooy connues to appear on sckers due to his World Cup appearance for Australia and this one bizarre ‘art’ scker from Tschu He li of Switzerland once again came from eBay and this me very cheaply indeed - only £1.00 and 75p postage from Germany! Finally, just two days before the World Cup commenced, Town announced that upon its conclusion they would be signing Ramadan Sobhi from Stoke City so the chase was on to find cards of him. This Panini ‘PRIZM’ card is from the same series as the many Mooy cards and is a limited edion ‘Blue’ num- bered #088/199. I’m going to be a long me collecng these, I think... MAGAZINE POSTERS/ARTICLES You would be forgiven for thinking that the sum- mer closed season would have yielded no more Town posters, but this one of Aaron Mooy surfaced in mid-June. It’s clearly not a Town-specific one but I will add it to my collecon anyway in just the same way as I am collecng the WC cards of Mooy, Jørgensen, Lössl and now, Sobhi. hps://huddersfieldtowncollecon.wordpress.com/ 2 Auction Watch Somemes I noce some really interesng aucon items related to Town and I bring them to your aenon here; occasionally you might be lucky enough to sll have me to bid on them! Beware, though, as there will be Buyer’s Premiums to pay on them, somemes as high as 20%! Not a lot to report this me, I’m afraid. As menoned elsewhere, a second ce- ramic ‘ Terrier’ ceramic money-box fetched £42 on eBay , but that’s about it. If, however, you fancy a bit of a gamble, there is an item on eBay which might just ckle your fancy Shown right is a kit bag complete with boots, training ‘spikes’ and Topical Times card of ex- Town player Len Bu. He le Town mov- ing to Blackburn and later York, Mans- field and laerly Mossley where he was a player-manager. Originally priced at £400, the collecon can now be yours for just £325.00. The aucon runs unl the 12th July and is aucon #163094054624. Please let me know if you buy these. I wish that I owned this There are many collectables out there that I know feature Town or individual players, as well as many football items in general. As part of an on-going series, I present for you here one of the items that I would love to add to my collecon. 2018 PANINI ‘PRIZM’ FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA, ‘Cyrillic’ parallel card You are probably aware that there is a multude of cards out there right now celebrang the 2018 World Cup and the players involved. Panini - and dealers/collectors in parcular - are cash- ing in big style with the myriad ‘ parallel’ versions of cards such as the one shown here. This set has a ‘ base’ of 300 cards of individ- ual players but then there are twenty-two ‘parallel’ cards of each player, every one slightly different from the previous ones. They are all prismac , meaning that if you catch them in a certain light they exhibit all kinds of amazing colours and paerns. I have to admit that they are very nice indeed, but the price for each card escalates exorbitantly as the level of card increases. This card, a ‘Cyrillic’ card, so-called because the player’s name is wrien in Russian Cyrillic text, is really hard to find and sold on eBay on June 21st for £51.00! As far as I am aware, the text on the re- verse is standard English, but I can’t be sure and I doubt that I’ll ever find out. This card is obviously symptomac of the way that card col- lecng is going and it looks as though it’s going to become even more expensive in the future. hps://huddersfieldtowncollecon.wordpress.com/ 3 Other football cards As I know that there are several subscribers to this newsleer who are neither HTAFC fans nor collectors I try to include other football cards or items that I have which will throw the spotlight on other collectable items and/or teams. Here’s another ... “PLUCK” ’Famous Football Teams’ (1922) Now here’s a lovely set of cards that isn’t too difficult to collect; twenty-seven in all, with Scosh variants if you want them. I got lucky - I managed to pick up eleven of them for just £5.00. Individually these cards are catalogued at £4.00 (but can be had for as lile as £2.50) so that was quite a bar- gain. The problem for me now is to pick up the missing sixteen cards at reasonable (Yorkshireman!) prices. Each card shows a photographic team line-up on the front and the reverse features the names of the players together with the card number and details of which card to expect next week. There are some great teams included here, but it is a sad indicaon of just how far some teams have fallen in the intervening period; Bury, Crewe Alexandra, Lincoln City and Oldham Athlec, for example, are now plying their trade in the boom division of the English League system whilst Clapton Orient (now Leyton Orient) and Darlington have fallen even further. Bury F.C., you may be aware, were even Cup win- ners in 1900 and 1903 - yes, that’s more than the majority of current Premier League teams! There were two issues of this set, one in England and Wales and a slightly different one in Scotland. Re- placement cards were issued in Scotland with the backs of the preceding cards altered accordingly. For the record, here are the teams in the English issue together with their Scosh counterparts: The Arsenal; Cardiff City; Toenham Hotspur; Burnley; Aston Villa; Glasgow Rangers; West Bromwich Albion; Black- burn Rovers; Chelsea (Hibernian); Stoke; Barnsley; Manchester United (Falkirk); Crewe Alexandra; Old- ham Athlec; Manchester City (Celc); Lincoln City; Darlington; Everton (Raith Rovers); Hull City; Swansea Town; Middlesbrough (Aberdeen); Sunderland; Leicester City; Bury (Albion Rovers); Walsall; Huddersfield Town; Clapton Orient (Third Lanark).
