Tv Medical Dramas: Health Care As Soap Opera
TV MEDICAL DRAMAS: HEALTH CARE AS SOAP OPERA LESLEY HENDERSON ‘Medicine is drama, doctors are human, and patients are trouble or troubled’.1 he medical drama occupies an extraordinary position in contemporary Ttelevision. The format attracts multiple awards (ER became the most nominated series in TV history, earning 122 Emmy nominations and 22 Awards) and breaks new ground in television aesthetics (St Elsewhere popularised pedeconferencing – the ‘walk and talk’ tracking shot to signify the supposedly frenetic pace of hospital life). The genre is economically important, too, as medical dramas consistently attract large audiences with ‘gold dust’ demographics for advertisers – the notoriously elusive 18-49 years. These programmes deliver high drama but also convey important messages about health and illness, often highlighting political issues which are neglected in television news and documentary formats. Thus the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan – underreported by the US news media – was brought to ER viewers through characters Dr John Carter and Dr Gregory Pratt, who were depicted working in a refugee camp trying to protect their patients from the Janjaweed militia (series 12, 2006). As these fictional scenes were being transmitted to global audiences, George Clooney – formerly ER’s Dr Doug Ross – spoke out at public rallies to stimulate support for American intervention in Darfur, thus blurring the lines between drama and the material world still further.2 Shows such as House MD are dissected in meticulous detail by fans and medical professionals on websites filled with endless analysis of the plausibility of plot and procedure.3 The medical drama is a commercial product that not only reflects our socio-cultural and economic environment but also illuminates wider changes in broadcasting culture. -

The Directors UK TV Fiction Committee Member Biographies September 2018
The Directors UK TV Fiction Committee Member biographies September 2018 Bill Anderson After combining TV writing commissions with two years as a roustabout on the Fulmar Alpha North Sea oil-rig, I left Aberdeen and took the NFTS directing course. Credits include workplace dramas The Mill, Mr Selfridge and Dockers (BAFTA and RTS nominated, written by sixteen striking Liverpool dockers, Irvine Welsh and Jimmy McGovern, executive produced by the striking Liverpool port stewards); historical epics Sword of Honour with Daniel Craig and Boudica with Alex Kingston; and politically dystopian Fields of Gold and Last Rights. Helming the pilot of Lewis brought on a rash of detectives: DCI Banks, Taggart, George Gently, and Case Histories. Guardians, which I also wrote, was nominated for RTS best single drama and the Prix Italia. Most recently I’ve served time on Doctor Who. I’m a passionate natural beekeeper with six Warré hives on my London roof, and I write the regular beekeeping column for The Idler magazine. Otto Bathurst After becoming an editor, I switched into production and moved up through the ranks of assistant director and then made a short film, which toured the international festival circuit picking up a bunch of awards. From this, my directing career was launched. I have directed a number critically acclaimed TV shows. These include; the HBO co-production Five Days — nominated for BAFTA, Golden Globe and RTS awards; Criminal Justice, which won the BAFTA for Best Drama Serial, the Prix Italia for Best Drama and the Broadcast Award for Best Mini Series of the year; a single film, Margot; the provocative cult drama, Black Mirror, which won the International Emmy and the comedy award at the Rose d’Or Television Festival. -
The Nation's Health TV Season at BFI Southbank in May 2011
PRESS RELEASE MARCH 2011 11/28 The Nation’s Health TV Season at BFI Southbank in May 2011. In an era when the National Health Service is facing impending and major reform, BFI Southbank mounts a season investigating television’s love affair with the NHS across drama, comedy and documentary from the 1950’s to today and asks what this tells us about our relationship with the venerable institution. In addition to screenings of NHS based dramas including GF Newman’s’ The Nation’s Health (1983), comedies like Only When I Laugh (1979) and documentaries such as Jimmy’s (1979, highlights of the season are set to include a special discussion with Casualty creators Paul Unwin, Jeremy Brock and John Yorke (BBC Controller, Drama Production and New Talent) who will be examining both the programme’s enduring appeal and the changes it has undergone. Creator of Cardiac Arrest and Bodies, Dr. Jed Mercurio, will also take to the BFI Southbank stage to discuss the immense significance of both of his celebrated productions. Television was quick to see the potential in the heightened emotions surrounding illness, death and the romantic attraction of doctors and nurses, all neatly contained in the one set – your average NHS hospital ward. From ATV's Emergency Ward 10 dating from the 1950's to the BBC's current series Holby City these basic tenets of the hospital drama remain the same. A gift to writers and producers but also an historical document of the way we perceive our NHS and the immense changes in our relationship with it through the decades. -
