Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed in the owner(s) of the Intellectual Property Rights. i Abstract The Western image of Turks is identified with two distinctive stereotypes: ‘Terrible Turk’ and ‘Lustful Turk.’ These stereotypical images are deeply rooted in the history of the Ottoman Empire and its encounters with Christian Europe. Because of their fear of being dominated by Islam, European Christians defined the Turks as the wicked ‘Other’ against their perfect ‘Self.’ Since the beginning of Crusades, the Western image of Turks is associated with cruelty, barbarity, murderousness, immorality, and sexual perversion. These characteristics still appear in cinematic representations of Turks. In Western films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Midnight Express, the portrayals of Turks echo the stereotypes of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ This thesis argues that these stereotypes have transformed into a myth and continued to exist uniformly in Western contemporary cinema. The thesis attempts to ascertain the uniformity and consistency of the cinematic image of Turks and determine the associations between this image and the myths of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ To achieve this goal, this thesis examines the trajectory of the Turkish image in Western discourse between the 11th and 21st centuries. -

Giving the Devil His Due: The meE rgence of the Fallen Hero in English Literature Abstract In 1637, John Milton wrote Paradise Lost, which presented the story of Satan’s fall from heaven. From this text, a humanized Satan was born who, despite his evil vices, consisted of heroic traits which future authors loved. Milton’s Satan became the model for future Romantic Authors including Lord George Byron. By examining specific influences in the late 1700’s, one can understand how the Prince of Darkness evolved into a tragic hero. The main aim of Socialist Realist literature was to portray reality through the lens of the undoubted victory of communism. Mikhail Bulgakov considered writers' freedom to be more important than the goals ofSocialist Realism. This thesis explores how Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita subverts the main ideas of Socialist Realism. The second chapter examines the genesis and the main principles of Socialist Realism. -

He is considered to be the founder of progressive romanticism in 20th century Azerbaijan literature . Huseyn Javid was born on October 24, 1882 in Nakhchivan. He got his primary education in mollakhana – religious school and continued in Tarbiyya a school of M.T.Sidgi and wrote poems under the pseudonym Gulchin by his inspiration. 3 Huseyn Javid's family. His wife Mishkinaz khanum, son Artoghrol Javid and daughter Turan Javid Javid lived in Tabriz and Urmiya in 1898- 1903, studied in the Talibiyya Madrasah (religious high school) in Tabriz. In 1906- 1909 he continued his education in Istanbul University, got inspired by poems of the poets such as Rezа Тоfig and Тоfig Fikrat. -

Tracing Aylisli’s development as a Soviet writer of Azerbaijani “village prose,” I follow the displacements of the village enacted in his recent works. These displacements reflect Aylisli’s response to the violent events associated with the end of the Soviet Union in the South Caucasus. While carrying on the traditions of “village prose” in a way, Aylisli stands against the chauvinistic forces that conscripted many of its leading figures in Russia. The Embodiment of Huseyn Javid's Creativity in Music

Along with lyrical poems, ghazals, lyrical-epic poems, dramas also play an important role in Huseyn Javid’s creativity. His “Mother”, “Maral”, “Sheikh Sanan”, “Khayyam”, “Topal Teymur”, “Siyavush” etc. dramas reflects poet’s lyrical and philosophical thoughts. Music have a special place in the dramas of Huseyn Javid. When writing his works, Huseyn Javid also thought about their musical accompaniment. In the comments on his works, he clearly noted the use of music on various instruments, folk songs, dances, mugham and characteristics of ashiq art. This kind of notes demonstrate Huseyn Javid’s sense of music, his taste, and knowledge, and become an important source of information about the place and time in which the works took place. These guidelines also play an important role in the musical arrangement of the play during the staging of these works. As a result of the fact that composers write music for performance based on these comments, music is created that deeply reveals the dramatic essence of the work. -

From the mid-nineteenth century through World War I, the Russian empire continued an era of expansion, colonizing the diverse ethnic and cultural territories of the Muslim Caucasus and Central Asia. The oil boom, the creation of an international Turkic language press, the spread of Russian language education and the construction of the Transcaspian Baku-Batumi Railroad during this period all contributed to the development of a cosmopolitan literary and artistic scene in the administrative and industrial capitals of Tbilisi and Baku. While discussions about the destiny of the Russian Empire – its relationship to the European Enlightenment, Byzantium and its own imperial acquisitions percolated in Moscow and Petersburg, debates about the role of Islam and language politics as well as Pan-Turkic, Pan-Islamic and proletarian discourses of identity dominated discussions ii among writers and thinkers in the Caucasus. -
