As followers in the Conqueror’s army the Wydeviles rose through service with the Mowbray family. The Palatinate of Cheshire serves as an example to argue a tradition of independently negotiated county level structures for taxation and law created degrees of customary autonomy reinforcing the localized rejection of a single nation state. Historiographical debates surrounding early-modern conceptions about the nature of the state are challenged to argue for provincial autonomy founded upon custom and negotiation claimed and exerted by county inhabitants to a greater extent than previously recognised. I contend that early-modern communities locally recognized the composite structure and authority of the realm under the Crown and its advisors, but rejected the corporate idea that all counties collectively form a ‘nation’ as one political body.     Economic Ethics in Late Medieval England, 1300–1500 Jennifer Hole, BA, MMEMS This Thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Humanities Discipline of History 2015 Abstract This study is an investigation of economic ethics, their impacts and the perception of them, in late medieval England. As part of this investigation, there are four main aspects to consider: the particular concepts which could be defined as economic ethics, and by whom; the social groups for which these concepts were intended; how this body of knowledge was transmitted to society at large; and the extent to which it informed responses to economic injustice. To date, the study of economic ethics in late medieval England has been focused on deceitful trade, unfair pricing, and usury, especially in relation to the regulation of merchants and traders. Here, the aim is to show that economic relations outside the marketplace and urban and international trade were also subject to criticism from the ethical point of view. For this reason, this study gives more attention to economic relationships between landowners and tenants, and the king and his subjects, and less to ethical behaviour in the marketplace and its regulation. This study aims to show that economic ethics were applied to society as a whole, and that the ideals of social harmony and the properly ordered society provided connections between many of the concepts of economic ethics. It explores notions of good lordship in relations between landowners and tenants as both a corrective to and an extension of the existing emphasis on the ideal of the common good, which was more important at the national level and in urban communities.

    SEYMOUR AND DE LA MARE -217- THE SEYMOUR FAMILY OF HATCH, SOMERSET, AND DE LA MARE FAMILY OF LITTLE HEREFORD by Paul C Reed 1 ABSTRACT This article begins the documentation of the Seymour family — ancestors of Henry VIII’s third wife — after they left Monmouthshire and settled in England. They gradually rose from relative obscurity through a series of advantageous matches to heiresses to become one of the leading families in Wiltshire (even so, it was only through the favour of Henry and his son Edward VI that they finally attained the peerage in the person of the queen’s brother, Edward Seymour, Viscount Beauchamp, Earl of Hertford, Baron Seymour and finally Duke of Somerset). Included with this article is a separate account that begins to chart out the maternal ancestry traced through the de la Mare family of Little Hereford. Monmouth, in the Marches of Wales, was a man of relatively modest means at the time he married Cecily de Beauchamp, the young widow of Sir Gilbert de Turberville, a prominent Welsh knight. Roger’s ancestors were knights, but lived in a fairly precarious region subject to raids by the native Welsh and frequent summons to military service to maintain the peace. It was then a region ruled by local custom in spite of a concerted effort to extend the king’s law.2 Cecily de Beauchamp’s father John, 2nd Lord Beauchamp of Somerset, was already dead when her first husband died so arrangements for her second marriage would have been in the hands of the king.

Much material which was unavailable to Foss might now add to, or even alter, the information he provides; and while it seems unlikely that anyone will again attempt a study of all the English judges, we can add substantially to Foss's information through works on individuals or smaller groups —patch-work, as Sayles terms it. In this paper I shall be concerned with the seventeen chief justices of the courts of king's bench and common pleas during the reign of Edward III, 1327-1377.
