Vincent Dureil is a master farmer and winemaker, basically a workaholic, and he produces wines of absolute grace. Wines that are texturally lucious but never flabby. Wines that are crisp but never jarring. People often debate what is a wine’s biggest marker. The grape, the vineyard from which it came, or the wine- maker’s hand? Vincent’s focus is everywhere, so in this case the answer is all of the above. • Champagne Lilbert-Fils Cramant
Champagne Lilbert-Fils Cramant The written record has the Lilbert family cultivating vines around its hilltop village of Cramant in 1746, and it’s probably a fair bet that they were there sometime before that (the oldest part of their 23-foot-deep cellar dates from 1712). The record further shows that as early as 1907 the family bottled its own wine for commercial sale. Despite such longevity, the house of Lilbert is tiny: it farms a mere 3.5 hectares of vines (this figure translates into 8.6 acres, and unfortunately our old back label erroneously states 9.4 acres). Bertrand Lilbert and his father Georges make only grand cru blanc de blancs from 100% Chardonnay. Their annual production averages 2,300 twelve-pack cases. To put this in perspective, the house of Moët & Chandon pumps out 25 million cases each year. Unlike Moët, the Lilberts make all of their wine from their own vineyards, which break down into 15 parcels in the grand cru villages of Oiry (10% of their total plantation), Chouilly (30%), and Cramant (60%) on the Côte des Blancs. The vine age average is 45 years old. Note that Cramant should not be confused with crémant. Crémant once used to be a term reserved for a style of Champagne with less pressure--and indeed the village of Cramant has a tradition of making wine in such a style, so much so that Lilbert's Perle was once labeled as Crémant de Cramant. But those days are gone and now crémant legally refers to all méthode Champenoise wine made within France but outside of the Champagne appellation." The Côte des Blancs is a ridge that begins just outside of Epernay and runs north-south.

Grower Champagne Club MARCH 2021 CHARDONNAY: AVIZE TO AMBONNAY, CARBONATE TO CLAY GROWER CHAMPAGNE NO. 1 R.H. Coutier Blanc de blancs Brut Chardonnay Ambonnay, Champagne, France NV RE-ORDER: $49 GROWER: The Coutier story spans an incredible 400 years in the Montagne de Reims, starting way back in 1619 in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. This area is certainly regarded as Pinot country, with south-facing slopes and a slightly warmer microclimate suitable to ripen the finicky Pinot it has long been a red-zone. But in 1948 Henri Coutier was the first vigneron in Ambonnay to plant Chardonnay in the village, an iconoclastic move at the time that is now roundly respected thanks to the bombastic wines the family has turned out in the decades since. Nowadays, fifth generation winemaker Antoine Coutier leads the 22 acre estate, about one-third of which is Chardonnay. The vines are spread over 40 different plots, each one representing the intriguing subtle differences in the mix of clay and limestone soils. The family farms without ever using herbicides and using only organic fertilizers. The Coutier house style is based in the richness of Ambonnay’s ripe fruit but also aims to preserve all the terroir minerality and freshness of their Grand Cru sites. The wines are mostly fermented and aged in stainless steel with little barrel aging ever, and only about two-thirds go through malolactic fermentation in order to balance opulence with verve in their blends. TASTING NOTES: This has so very much succulent juicy decadence, and yet that refined pointedness that makes champagne the very pinnacle of unparalleled hedonistic delight.

  • Champagne Delamotte Blanc De Blancs 2008 | VQ9UGE
Champagne Delamotte Blanc de Blancs 2008 Selected for its richness and cellaring potential, Delamotte Blanc de Blancs vintage comes from a long line of great wines, offering gourmets greatest champagne pairings. THE VINTAGE Yes, the winter was mild, spring was cold and rainy and early June was glacial, then flowering began and the future was decided. There were worries about coulure and millerandage, dreaded afflictions of the vine. The winemakers waited…and June finally turned into summer: the grapes looked to be well-developed, and a harvest date could be forecast. A superb August sealed the deal. The Chardonnay flourished, gaining in ripeness until mid-September when the harvest started in the Côte des Blancs, ensuring that 2008 would be an exceptional year. And the long wait began. TERROIR From Cramant to Le Mesnil-sur-Oger through Avize and Oger but also Chouilly and Oiry : all are found in the Côte des Blancs. Its location is one of Delamotte’s richest assets. The chalky soil, the flora and the sloping vineyards give the grapes their exceptional character, delivering delicate, consistent champagnes. Championing this exceptional terroir, drawing the best from it while maintaining absolute respect for the vines and the environment – that’s what Delamotte is all about. VINIFICATION Each village has its own style. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (20%): acidity, purity and chalky minerality. Avize (20%): balance and structure. Oger (20%), warmth, body and generosity. Cramant: smoky minerality. Chouilly: robustness and length. And finally, Oiry: acidity and roundness. To reprise the musical analogy, each territory has its own score and, when they are all played together to create Delamotte Blanc de Blancs 2008, each one can be heard in its own right.

Champagne Marc Hébrart Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru NV A very elegant Champagne that has a fine mousse, with Awards a lovely, fine and biscuity character. 92 Pts, Robert Parker, 2019 Producer Note Marc Hébrart and his wife started making Champagne in 1963, adding plots little by little due to the high price of land in Champagne. In 1997, Marc retired and his son Jean-Paul became director. Their estate now covers 15.5 hectares, over 68 plots spread across the Marne's two river banks. In the Côtes des Blancs, Hébrart’s Grand Cru terroirs of Avize, Oiry and Chouilly produce fine, ripe and mineral Chardonnays. The Premier Cru terroirs of Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Bisseuil and Avenay-Val-d'Or in the Vallée de la Marne and Montagne de Reims produce juicy and structured Pinot Noirs. This diversity and estate supply enables Jean-Paul to create very precise cuvées and to control the quality from the vineyard to the winemaking. In the vineyard, natural methods are used to cultivate the vines. In 2014, Hébrart was quoted as being among the 100 Best Wine Producers in the World by Wine&Spirits Magazine. Vineyard This Chardonnay comes from the Grand Cru terroirs of Chouilly and Oiry and the Premier Cru terroir of Mareuil sur Aÿ. The vines, which have an average age of 40 years, are grown on low cretaceous chalk slopes, ideal for Chardonnay planting. For a number of years, Marc Hébrart has applied sustainable viticultural practices to his vines and makes his wines in small batches in order to preserve the personality of each parcel and terroir.
