El Salvador El Salvador (the Republic of the Savior) is known to be the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. It borders Guatemala, Honduras, the Paciﬁc Ocean and the Gulf of Fonseca. It’s the only country in this region not on the Caribbean Sea. San Salvador, the capital city, is considered to be an important cultural and commercial center for the whole of Central America. Geography El salvador has a large presence of mountains and is also known as the “land of volcanoes.” Hence, most parts are on a fertile volcanic plateau about 2,000 ft (607m) high. Population 5,744,133 people (composed predominantly of mestizos) form the population of El Salvador. .Mestizo is a term traditionally used in Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America to mean a person of combined European and American Indian descent. Others include 12% white and 1% indigenous. More Facts The colón was the ofﬁcial currency of El Salvador from 1892 to 2001, after which it adopted the U.S Dollar. Based on the research carried out in 2010 ,El Salvador ranked 112th among human development index (and fourth in central america) and is increasing rapidly when it comes to the industrial sector. The Maritime Voyage of Jorge Juan to the Viceroyalty of Peru (1735-1746) Enrique Martínez-García — Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas* María Teresa Martínez-García — Kansas University** Translated into English (August 2012) One of the most famous scientific expeditions of the Enlightenment was carried out by a colorful group of French and Spanish scientists—including the new Spanish Navy lieutenants D. Jorge Juan y Santacilia (Novelda 1713-Madrid 1773) and D. Antonio de Ulloa y de la Torre-Giralt (Seville 1716-Isla de León 1795)—at the Royal Audience of Quito in the Viceroyalty of Peru between 1736 and 1744. There, the expedition conducted geodesic and astronomical observations to calculate a meridian arc associated with a degree in the Equator and to determine the shape of the Earth. The Royal Academy of Sciences of Paris, immersed in the debate between Cartesians (according to whom the earth was a spheroid elongated along the axis of rotation (as a "melon")) and Newtonians (for whom it was a spheroid flattened at the poles (as a "watermelon")), decided to resolve this dispute by comparing an arc measured near the Equator (in the Viceroyalty of Peru, present-day Ecuador) with another measured near the North Pole (in Lapland). The expedition to the Equator, which is the one that concerns us in this note, was led by Louis Godin (1704-1760), while Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) headed the expedition to Lapland. The knowledge of the shape and size of the Earth had great importance for the improvement of cartographic, geographic, and navigation techniques during that time.

- 1 El Salvador's Holocaust Heroes By John Lamperti1 It must be clearly established that San Salvador [sic] is the only state to overcome any hesitancy and to undertake an active rescue operation. Carl Lutz, Swiss Ambassador in Budapest, 19442 Germany invaded its wavering ally Hungary on March 19, 1944, when eleven German divisions marched into Budapest. There was no resistance, and a compliant puppet government was installed in a few days. The “final solution” for Hungarian Jews then began with shocking speed. In a few weeks yellow stars and ghettos were imposed everywhere that Jews lived in Hungary outside the capital. Deportations to Auschwitz began in mid May, and in less than a fortnight from 12,000 to 14,000 Jewish people per day were being sent away on special trains, packed horribly into freight and cattle cars. In less than two months, 445,000 human beings had been shipped to their deaths.3 George Mandel/Mantello Suddenly the transports stopped. Hungary’s strong man Miclós Horthy, who had raised few previous objections to Hitler’s plans, ordered a halt to the deportations while more than 200,000 Jews in Budapest remained largely unmolested. To many that halt seemed no less than a miracle. But what made Horthy act? The answer, surprisingly, has much to do with the small, far-off nation of El Salvador and with a man named George Mantello. Most Salvadorans have never heard his name, although he was an official of their government during the critical years of the second World War. Mantello was an unusual Salvadoran who spoke no Spanish and never set his foot on the nation's soil.
