El Salvador El Salvador (the Republic of the Savior) is known to be the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. It borders Guatemala, Honduras, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Fonseca. It’s the only country in this region not on the Caribbean Sea. San Salvador, the capital city, is considered to be an important cultural and commercial center for the whole of Central America. Geography El salvador has a large presence of mountains and is also known as the “land of volcanoes.” Hence, most parts are on a fertile volcanic plateau about 2,000 ft (607m) high. Population 5,744,133 people (composed predominantly of mestizos) form the population of El Salvador. .Mestizo is a term traditionally used in Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America to mean a person of combined European and American Indian descent. Others include 12% white and 1% indigenous. More Facts The colón was the official currency of El Salvador from 1892 to 2001, after which it adopted the U.S Dollar. Based on the research carried out in 2010 ,El Salvador ranked 112th among human development index (and fourth in central america) and is increasing rapidly when it comes to the industrial sector.
