    The Maritime Voyage of Jorge Juan to the Viceroyalty of Peru (1735-1746) Enrique Martínez-García — Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas* María Teresa Martínez-García — Kansas University** Translated into English (August 2012) One of the most famous scientific expeditions of the Enlightenment was carried out by a colorful group of French and Spanish scientists—including the new Spanish Navy lieutenants D. Jorge Juan y Santacilia (Novelda 1713-Madrid 1773) and D. Antonio de Ulloa y de la Torre-Giralt (Seville 1716-Isla de León 1795)—at the Royal Audience of Quito in the Viceroyalty of Peru between 1736 and 1744. There, the expedition conducted geodesic and astronomical observations to calculate a meridian arc associated with a degree in the Equator and to determine the shape of the Earth. The Royal Academy of Sciences of Paris, immersed in the debate between Cartesians (according to whom the earth was a spheroid elongated along the axis of rotation (as a "melon")) and Newtonians (for whom it was a spheroid flattened at the poles (as a "watermelon")), decided to resolve this dispute by comparing an arc measured near the Equator (in the Viceroyalty of Peru, present-day Ecuador) with another measured near the North Pole (in Lapland). The expedition to the Equator, which is the one that concerns us in this note, was led by Louis Godin (1704-1760), while Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) headed the expedition to Lapland. The knowledge of the shape and size of the Earth had great importance for the improvement of cartographic, geographic, and navigation techniques during that time.

Carl Lutz, Swiss Ambassador in Budapest, 19442 Germany invaded its wavering ally Hungary on March 19, 1944, when eleven German divisions marched into Budapest. There was no resistance, and a compliant puppet government was installed in a few days. The “final solution” for Hungarian Jews then began with shocking speed. In a few weeks yellow stars and ghettos were imposed everywhere that Jews lived in Hungary outside the capital. Deportations to Auschwitz began in mid May, and in less than a fortnight from 12,000 to 14,000 Jewish people per day were being sent away on special trains, packed horribly into freight and cattle cars. In less than two months, 445,000 human beings had been shipped to their deaths.3 George Mandel/Mantello Suddenly the transports stopped. Hungary’s strong man Miclós Horthy, who had raised few previous objections to Hitler’s plans, ordered a halt to the deportations while more than 200,000 Jews in Budapest remained largely unmolested. To many that halt seemed no less than a miracle. But what made Horthy act? The answer, surprisingly, has much to do with the small, far-off nation of El Salvador and with a man named George Mantello. Most Salvadorans have never heard his name, although he was an official of their government during the critical years of the second World War. Mantello was an unusual Salvadoran who spoke no Spanish and never set his foot on the nation's soil.

FRANCIS* . HE CASE of Don Antonio Jose Martinez, parish priest of T Taos at the time of the American invasion, is still very much alive in New Mexico. The powerful personality of the old New Mexican padre, who died in 1867, has all the reality of a political myth. He has been cast in the role of the great yet enigmatic antagonist of Jean Baptiste Lamy, first Cath­ olic bishop of Santa Fe, another New Mexican legend made famous through Willa Cather's fictionalized history Death Comes to the Archbishop. In fact there are few books on nineteenth-century New Mexico-fiction, popularization or scholarly history-which would omit mentioning the two entirely. The story of their dramatic fight not only strikes the imagination, it also offers a key to the understanding of the Spanish-American minority in the Upper Rio Grande region.
