Farewell to Chris Luckin, , Chris Luckin officially Headteacher of Steyning Primary School As most parents with children at Steyning CE Primary School will already know retires at the end of March this year after more than 14 years as our Headteacher. Chris began his professional teaching career in 1972 and has been a full time Headteacher since 1985. As far as Steyning is concerned, this has been an eventful period for the school which was completely rebuilt some 4 years after Chris joined us and provides the wonderful environment that our children and grandchildren are able to enjoy today. Besides the addition of a dedicated Nurture Group classroom in 2014, following a generous grant from the Wilson Memorial Trust, Chris’ final legacy to the school will be the newly refurbished library currently under construction and paid for from the funds raised by the Friends of Steyning Primary School.

Immediately after the Easter holidays, Sue Harrison, currently Headteacher at English Martyrs Primary School in Worthing will take up the reins. Sue, like Chris, joins us with a wealth of previous experience and we very much look forward to welcoming her to the school during the summer term.

In closing, the Governors and staff would like to express their sincere thanks for all that Chris has done for the children of Steyning and wish him all the very best in his well-deserved retirement. Chris plans to continue to live in Steyning so will become an even more familiar face around the town over the months to come.

YS 4 Your Steyning April 2016 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk LOCAL NEWS Steyning Festival News Steyning Festival Yarn Bomb competition sponsored by Knitting for All. The Yarn Bomb is back! We tried this out in 2014 and it proved very popular so we are going to have another go. In case this is new to you, yarn bombing or guerrilla knitting is a type of street art that employs colourful displays of knitted, crochet or woven yarn or fibre. Yarn bombing can happen anywhere form lamp-posts to bicycles, trees to statues. The more colourful the better, this form of cosy art is designed to make us all smile and is just perfect for decorating the town during the festival. How to Yarn Bomb and enter the competition Choose somewhere to put your yarn bomb – a lamppost, a railing, a bench seat or a tree. Anything that you think would be cheered by your creation. Your own street, the High Street and Church Street are all good places and this years festival is centred around the Big Top Marquee in Cuthmans field so the more yarn we can get around there the better. Download a PDF with more information about this competition from the Steyning Festival website or contact: [email protected].

Getting older does however bring with it the benefit of a lifetime's experience and it can also have its funny side. We would really like you to share your thoughts on this. So put your observations (funny or otherwise) onto paper or your computer or iPad, and send them to us. Visit the Steyning Festival website to download the competition details. Come to the Dingemans Centre on Tuesday 24th May to hear some of the fabulous stories!

Within a few months most of the line had been taken up and demolition of the station buildings had begun. It was not what had been hoped for when the opening of the first passenger service on the line had been celebrated on a summer's day in 1861. Vast and enthusiastic crowds gathered to see the first train, bedecked with flags, draw into the station - a strange and unique experience for many. The town band led a procession to the White Horse where a dinner for 75 people toasted success to the London and South Coast Railway and to the people who had built the line, with "champagne of the finest vintage".

The part played by the station in Steyning life was demonstrated time and again during its 105 year existence. In 1901, for instance, William Blaber, who had been besieged for 118 days at Ladysmith (during the Boer War), arrived back in Steyning. With less than two hours notice of his arrival some two hundred people converged on the station together with the band. The moment Blaber descended Fixing a wreath to the last train to leave Steyning station from the train he was cheered continuously and carried shoulder high to the Norfolk Arms where the band played It was on 6th March 1966 that the last train pulled out of "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem - though "it was Steyning station on its way back to Shoreham and Brighton noticed by many that he looked fatigued and worn, which at 11.05 that Sunday night. Leave your comments on our Blog here: Clean Eating www.yoursteyning.co.uk/blog/clean-eating So, what do you make of this ‘clean eating’ business?

For many years I've been really interested in nutrition and Despite all initial concerns I have found this surprisingly I've seen first-hand what effect it has on my body and the easy. I have largely ignored the cookbooks telling me how children's behavior. But, that said, I'm starting to find all the to make our normal meals in a healthier way. Instead continual talk of nutribullets and juicing exhausting! I want I've focused on making sure that I have one fruit and veg to eat well but I don't want to have to invest in a whole packed smoothie every day. This means that I'm getting all new set of kit to do it. We've already got so many gizmos of my five a-day and plenty of vitamins in one hit. and gadgets in our kitchen that it resembles Tim Peake's bedroom on the International Space Station. I don't want to I can report a HUGE change; I've suddenly got masses of have to add to the collection in order to be healthy! energy! I think the simple approach is the way forward. Give it a try and let me know how you get on, I might even write I have been reading lots of blogs about clean eating, and my own healthy eating cook book! we've got various (unused) cookbooks but I just can't get my head around using chia seeds and tamari to make a 'chocolate' treat and, frankly, all the time they don't sell these things at the Co-op there's NO chance.

Some 'healthy' cooks advocate cutting out everything besides a basic set of fruit and vegetables (and quinoa of course) but this seems just too extreme. And, my husband will never go for it.

To add insult to injury, it turns out that in order to eat healthily, you need a lot of spare time. Cooking from scratch and hunting down fancy ingredients takes more hours than I can spare each day. But, I do really want to do my best to eat well.

I got some advice from a good friend. She said: "Why bother with all these superfoods and ingredients you can't pronounce? Just cut out the rubbish and do more exercise!" It's common sense, but her version of clean living is really effective and you don't have to max out your Amex in Curry's kitchen section to get started.

So, a few weeks back I decided to attempt to overcome all these problems and give it a go. For a good few weeks I've done it my way: clean eating from Monday to Thursday and then 'anything goes' from Friday through until Sunday night. There was no way I was cutting out my Friday night gin and tonic, or the glass (bottle) of red wine my body craves at the weekend.
