nature of readability. Commonly, languages have a range of tools for detransitivisation, topicalisation, and impersonalisation, of which passivisation is one (Givón, 1981). Passives have important roles in our language, and prescribing against their use lacks a full understanding of these roles. Much of the concern around passives from writers, editors, and teachers is no more than folklore that has not clearly analysed various writing and reading problems. Many awkward sentences are not awkward because they use passives but because they are wordy, clumsy, or pretentious. Most criticisms have little basis in linguistic theory, and rarely is there more than passing mention of the important role that passives play in communication. Some uses of passives are inappropriate, being vague, ambiguous, or even deceitful. These inappropriate uses of passive voice give the construction a bad name. They have become ammunition for prescriptive grammarians to fire at all uses of passives, often with weak analysis and minimal reference to linguistic theory. ‘Avoid passives’ has become a mantra. I tentatively suggest that there is unlikely to be a cost to processing passives. Given the speed at which the brain processes clauses, any differences in readability (if they exist) must be miniscule. Consequently, I suggest that any differences are unimportant relative to the benefits that appropriately used passives bring to readability. Furthermore, appropriately used passives may actually improve readability, especially when there is greater interest in the passive subject than the active subject, and when the passive serves to connect clauses or sentences. 7 Chapter I Unstable foundations Language has grown up like any big city: room by room…house by house, street by street…and all this boxed together, tied together, smeared together. –Fritz Mauther, quoted by Simon Blackburn, (1984, pp. 7–8) 1 Introduction Voice is an ambiguous term. On one hand, voice is a writer’s persona, which is about tone, point of view, and rhetorical stance (Schriver, 1997). On the other hand, voice is a grammatical concept, a property of verbs, along with tense, aspect, mood, number, and person (although I revise this concept in section 2.3). It is voice as a grammatical concept that this thesis studies, particularly passive voice 1. The Chicago Manual of Style (2003, p. 176) states: Voice shows whether the subject acts (active voice) or is acted on (passive voice) – that is, whether the

    Morphological causatives are Voice over Voice Yining Nie New York University Abstract Causative morphology has been associated with either the introduction of an event of causation or the introduction of a causer argument. However, morphological causatives are mono-eventive, casting doubt on the notion that causatives fundamentally add a causing event. On the other hand, in some languages the causative morpheme is closer to the verb root than would be expected if the causative head is responsible for introducing the causer. Drawing on evidence primarily from Tagalog and Halkomelem, I argue that the syntactic configuration for morphological causatives involves Voice over Voice, and that languages differ in whether their ‘causative marker’ spells out the higher Voice, the lower Voice or both. Keywords: causative, Voice, argument structure, morpheme order, typology, Tagalog 1. Introduction Syntactic approaches to causatives generally fall into one of two camps. The first view builds on the discovery that causatives may semantically consist of multiple (sub)events (Jackendoff 1972, Dowty 1979, Parsons 1990, Levin & Rappaport Hovav 1994, a.o.). Consider the following English causative–anticausative pair. The anticausative in (1a) consists of an event of change of state, schematised in (1b). Michael, Chair In this dissertation a methodology for identifying and analyzing serial verb constructions (SVCs) is developed, and its application is exemplified through an analysis of SVCs in Koro, an Oceanic language of Papua New Guinea. SVCs involve two main verbs that form a single predicate and share at least one of their arguments. In addition, they have shared values for tense, aspect, and mood, and they denote a single event. The unique syntactic and semantic properties of SVCs present a number of theoretical challenges, and thus they have invited great interest from syntacticians and typologists alike. But characterizing the nature of SVCs and making generalizations about the typology of serializing languages has proven difficult. There is still debate about both the surface properties of SVCs and their underlying syntactic structure. The current work addresses some of these issues by approaching serialization from two angles: the typological and the language-specific. On the typological front, it refines the definition of ‘SVC’ and develops a principled set of cross-linguistically applicable diagnostics.

Pertain to the mechanism of valency increasing, it is found that causative construction in Sasak Kuto-Kute dialect covers two forms: morphological and lexical. Morphological causative involves the process of adding confix N -ang/in and affix -in to the non-causative base verb, whilst, the lexical causative uses the causative verb mate 'died/killed'. Furthermore, it was found that the formation of causative from intransitive verbs can be done by moving the original S to O position in the causative construction, which is morphologically marked on the verb, and also using different verbs with the same meaning to form the causative construction which is followed by the transfer of the original S to O position. For transitive verbs, the formation can be done through the use of affixes with the original A and original O both becoming O1 and O2. Last, the causative construction in the dialect semantically involves five semantic parameters, namely transparency, naturalness, intention, involvement, and control. All verbal endings and stems are analysed and given both a synchronic description and, to the maximum possible ex- tent, a diachronic explanation. First, all verbal endings are gathered and described both generally and individually. Subsequently, the verbal stems are categorised into types according to stem formant (last segment(s) before the ending) and ending allo- morphy (e.g. lenited vs. unlenited). The last sections are devoted to a detailed individ- ual treatment of all attested Lycian verbal stems. A schema is presented in which the established Lycian stem types are mapped to their original Proto-Indo-European types (section 4.6), e.g. Lyc. s-stems < PIE sḱé/ó-presents. Thereby, a comprehensive model is provided by which the Lycian finite verb may be understood in both its Anatolian and Indo-European context.     University of Idaho Writing Center Resources Active vs. Passive Voice If you’ve ever gotten feedback from a teacher or professor that told you to “stop writing in the passive voice,” only to realize that you don’t actually know what that means, or how to correct it, you’re not alone. This handout is your guide to understanding what active vs. passive voice means and why passive voice is often discouraged in academic writing. Defining “Active vs. Passive” A sentence written in the passive voice will have a subject that receives the action of the verb ​ ​ ​ ​ (i.e. the subject is acted upon), whereas a sentence written in the active voice, will have a ​ ​ subject that performs the action of the verb. ​ ​ For example, here is a sentence written in the passive voice: ​ ​ “It was mentioned earlier that stress can have negative effects on a person’s health.” The subject (“It”) is receiving the action of the verb (“mentioned”). Additionally, the sentence doesn’t tell us who it was that mentioned the information, making the sentence less clear. Also note, using a form of the verb “to be” (in this case, “was”) followed by the past tense of another verb (in this case, “mentioned”) are clear indications that a sentence has been written in the passive voice. Now, here’s the same sentence written in the active voice: ​ ​ “The researchers mentioned how stress can have negative effects on a person’s health.” In this sentence, the subject (“researchers”) is performing the action (“mentioned”). Using active voice, we find out who mentioned the information, and there is no longer the need for a “to be” verb.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 II Abstract The present thesis aims to describe some aspects of Mod Greek syntax.It contains an introduction and five chapters. The introduction states the purpose for writing this thesis and points out the fact that it is a data-oriented rather, chan a theory-^oriented work. Chapter one deals with the word order in Mod Greek. The main conclusion drawn from this chapter is that, given the re­ latively rich system of inflexions of Mod Greek,there is a freedom of word order in this language;an attempt is made to account for this phenomenon in terms of the thematic structure. of the sentence and PSP theory. The second chapter examines the clitics;special attention is paid to clitic objects and some problems concerning their syntactic relations .to the rest of the sentence are pointed out;the chapter ends with the tentative suggestion that cli­ tics might be taken care of by the morphologichi component of the grammar• Chapter three deals with complementation;this a vast area of study and-for this reason the analysis is confined to 'oti1, 'na* and'pu' complement clauses; Object Raising, Verb Raising and Extraposition are also discussed in this chapter.

    International Conference on Linguistics, Literature and Culture Difficulties in Learning and Producing Passive Voice Fitnete Martinaj Faculty of Foreign Languages, AAB College Prishtina Abstract This study examines how learners learning English produce and judge English passive voice structures. The ultimate goal of this study is to contribute to an understanding of the extent, nature and sources of learners' persistent difficulties with some syntactic properties of the language they are acquiring. It is to examine whether word order errors in the production of English passive voice by L2 learners stem from lack of knowledge or from difficulties with automatic implementation of L2 procedures. To examine whether errors in the production of English passive voice by L2 learners (in our case, English) can be attributed to transfer of L1 (in our case, Albanian) properties and vice versa, Albanian and English patterns are compared. Taken together, the facts indicate that difficulties with English passive voice structures are a consistent phenomenon in L2 acquisition, and do not follow in a direct way from properties of the L1. Furthermore, the facts show that learners' errors are associated with some syntactic configurations, suggesting that L2 learners divert similar grammatical hypotheses and make use of similar mechanisms for language acquisition. Keywords: transfer, compare, similarities, interference Introduction The English passive is an English language structure that is used in many reading passages, particularly in academic and scientific texts, when it is not necessary to be mentioned the responsibility of the doer. Therefore, it is obvious that English passive is included in English instruction in most education levels. During my teaching experiences, I have found that a large number of Albanian EFL learners, at university level, cannot use the English passive correctly, although they have been taught this structure since secondary schools.

    Making English Grammar Meaningful and Useful Mini Lesson #9 Passive Voice: It’s All About Subjects and Verbs The purpose of this lesson is to present a new way that Passive Voice can be understood and presented to English language learners. Passive Voice refers to a sentence type in which the actor, performer or executor of an action verb is not the subject of the sentence. In Passive Voice sentences, the subject is typically the recipient or receiver of the action of the verb. The following sentences illustrate Passive Voice in 3 different tenses: Simple Present Tense, Simple Past Tense and Present Continuing Tense. The assignment is given every semester. The papers were submitted for grading last week. Currently, they are being read and evaluated. Notice in these three sentences, the focus is on ‘the assignment’. Who made the assignment, who submitted the assignment, and who is scoring the assignments are not mentioned. The three following sentences provide that information: The instructor gives the assignment every year. The students submitted their papers last week. The instructor is reading and evaluating them now. These sentences focus on the doers or agents of the actions described in the sentences. They are Active Voice sentences. Frequently Passive Voice is taught by providing the learner with an Active Voice sentence and instructing the learner how to reverse the order of the subject (agent) and object (recipient) of the action in the resulting Passive Voice sentence. Such a process is cumbersome; the active voice subject becomes a prepositional phrase, and the active voice object becomes the passive voice subject.
