It updates the previous study conducted in 2012, providing a signifcant amount of comparative data to further inform the discussion on the economic, cultural and social value of live music performance in this city. From the time, over one hundred years ago, that the city lent its name to Australia’s frst global music superstar, Dame Nellie Melba, music creation, production and presentation has been at the core of the city’s social and cultural life. Our passion for music was on display in the 1967 when an estimated 200,000 gathered at the Myer Music Bowl to send The Seekers off on their quest for world domination. It was forcefully demonstrated again in 2010 when 20,000 fans, musicians and industry workers took to the streets for the Save Live Australia’s Music (SLAM) rally when ill-considered regulations threatened the viability of our small live music venues. It has been reported1, that live music performance returns $3 in benefts – commercial, civic and individual, for every $1 invested.

Skinner, Ph.D. Mitchell B. Lerner, Ph.D. Copyright by Hye-jung Park 2019 Abstract This dissertation examines music in US-Korea relations from 1941 to 1960. Beginning during World War II, the US government disseminated Western classical and American music in Korea. After the war, the United States also gained the confidence of Koreans by supporting Korean traditional music that had been suppressed under Japanese colonial rule. Yet South Koreans were not merely passive recipients of US propaganda. As the Korean War divided Korea into North and South, South Korean officials used music to affirm the anti-Communist alliance between South Korea and the United States. American music spread rapidly in South Korea, contributing to the formation of South Korean identities different from those of the Communist North. By tracing a history of musical relations in the transitional period from the colonial era to the early Cold War, this project emphasizes that US Cold War music propaganda programs were not an entirely new initiative but built on the foundations laid in the 1940s. By demonstrating that a peripheral country used music as a tool for political negotiations with a superpower, this project also expands the horizons of scholarship on music propaganda, which has focused overwhelmingly on US and Soviet interventions in Europe.

Melbourne: RMIT University. i Foreword The music industry in Victoria has, like these industries worldwide, been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The approach taken in the state, to use lockdowns to slow and, as of December 2020, stop the spread of the virus, and the identification of live music events as prime sites for the potential spread of the disease, meant that all face-to-face music activities were halted as of mid-March. The Victorian Office for Women and the Victorian Music Development Office (VMDO) commissioned this research at the very outset of the lockdowns with a view to understanding how the pandemic was impacting people in all areas of the music sector, and to examine whether there was a differential impact for different groups, in particular men and women or gender non-conforming people. This research was funded by the Victorian Office for Women and the VMDO. The research would not have been possible without the willingness of people from all areas the music sector in Victoria to contribute their time and knowledge in filling out the survey.     IMAGES OF LIFE AND LEARNING—A POSTMODERN QUALITATIVE STUDY OF FIVE KOREAN PEOPLE’S PUBLISHED ORAL HISTORY by DAE JOONG KANG (Under the Direction of Sharan B. Merriam) ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to understand the influence of the socio-cultural-historical context on learning as it contributes to the construction of people’s lives. In particular, this study examined how the 20th century Korean socio-cultural-historical context and the lifelong learning of Korean people co-construct one another. The following research questions guided the study: (1) What are the patterns of learning activities among the people? (2) What was the socio- cultural-historical context that influenced their life and learning? (3) How did the patterns of learning activities emerge in conjunction with the socio-cultural-historical context? This study analyzed five narratives from the Korean People’s Oral History Series published by the Deep-Rooted Publishing House in Korea. The Series contains life narratives of twenty Korean people who were born between 1898 and 1926. I selected five for this study—Ki- nam (book three, Janggu drummer), Na-sop (book seven, onggi potter), So-shim (book nine, Kanggangsullae performer), Myong-hwan (book eleven, pansori drummer), and Tong-jong-wol (book fifteen, Kayageum player). I used postmodern content analysis that I developed through a critique of various content analysis methods. Postmodern content analysis is concerned with two different kinds of data—source data and assembling data. By using reading and writing as a method of inquiry, I took assembling data notes and analysis notes while I was reading the source data.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, American music has become a staple in worldwide pop culture, spreading to all four corners of the world. Indeed, the U.S. music industry has held the number one position in the ranking of the world’s top 10 largest music markets since its first record label, Columbia Records, was founded in 1887.
