Sendo o Ovelheiro Gaúcho uma raça bastante comum no Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) e no Uruguai, e com a cinofilia cada dia mais presente no meio acadêmico, devemos conhecer as características clínicas e genéticas que a raça pode ter herdado na sua formação. Uma das mais conhecidas é a sensibilidade específica a determinadas drogas, sabidamente presente em algumas raças que compartilham a mesma ancestralidade, como os Collies, associada ao gene mutante de resistência a múltiplas drogas conhecido como MDR1, cuja mutação causa aumento na suscetibilidade aos efeitos neurotóxicos de determinadas drogas.
