  • Purebred Dog Breeds Into the Twenty-First Century: Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs
Purebred Dog Breeds into the Twenty-First Century: Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs BY JEFFREY BRAGG WHAT IS A CANINE BREED? What is a breed? To put the question more precisely, what are the necessary conditions that enable us to say with conviction, "this group of animals constitutes a distinct breed?" In the cynological world, three separate approaches combine to constitute canine breeds. Dogs are distinguished first by ancestry , all of the individuals descending from a particular founder group (and only from that group) being designated as a breed. Next they are distinguished by purpose or utility, some breeds existing for the purpose of hunting particular kinds of game, others for the performance of particular tasks in cooperation with their human masters, while yet others owe their existence simply to humankind's desire for animal companionship. Finally dogs are distinguished by typology , breed standards (whether written or unwritten) being used to describe and to recognize dogs of specific size, physical build, general appearance, shape of head, style of ears and tail, etc., which are said to be of the same breed owing to their similarity in the foregoing respects. The preceding statements are both obvious and known to all breeders and fanciers of the canine species. Nevertheless a correct and full understanding of these simple truisms is vital to the proper functioning of the entire canine fancy and to the health and well being of the animals which are the object of that fancy. It is my purpose in this brief to elucidate the interrelationship of the above three approaches, to demonstrate how distortions and misunderstandings of that interrelationship now threaten the health of all of our dogs and the very existence of the various canine breeds, and to propose reforms which will restore both balanced breed identity and genetic health to CKC breeds.

  • Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally Active and Alert, Sporting Dogs Make Likeable, Well-Rounded Companions
Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally active and alert, Sporting dogs make likeable, well-rounded companions. Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise. The breeds of the AKC Sporting Group were all developed to assist hunters of feathered game. These “sporting dogs” (also referred to as gundogs or bird dogs) are subdivided by function—that is, how they hunt. They are spaniels, pointers, setters, retrievers, and the European utility breeds. Of these, spaniels are generally considered the oldest. Early authorities divided the spaniels not by breed but by type: either water spaniels or land spaniels. The land spaniels came to be subdivided by size. The larger types were the “springing spaniel” and the “field spaniel,” and the smaller, which specialized on flushing woodcock, was known as a “cocking spaniel.” ~~How many breeds are in this group? 31~~ 1. American Water Spaniel a. Country of origin: USA (lake country of the upper Midwest) b. Original purpose: retrieve from skiff or canoes and work ground c. Other Names: N/A d. Very Brief History: European immigrants who settled near the great lakes depended on the region’s plentiful waterfowl for sustenance. The Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly-Coated Retriever, and the now extinct English Water Spaniel have been mentioned in histories as possible component breeds. e. Coat color/type: solid liver, brown or dark chocolate. A little white on toes and chest is permissible.

Square, height being the same as the length of body. Strong, vigorous, energetic, and quick of movement; ruggedness without clumsiness is a characteristic of the breed. The tail is no more than four inches in length. SIZE: Ideally should measure 17 ½ to 20 ½ inches; Oversized or undersized animals are penalized to the extent of deviation from standard. Quality is not to be sacrificed in favor of size. Weight should weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. COAT: The coat is wavy or flat and dense. Feathering of moderate appearance is found on both the front and rear legs. The thighs are well-feathered, but not profusely (too little is preferable to too much), halfway to the hock. The ears carry little fringe. Dogs with long or profuse feathering or furnishings shall be so severely penalized as to effectively eliminate them. The skin is fine and fairly loose, but so loose as to form pouches is undesirable. Serious faults: Curly coat; Silky coat texture; Long or profuse feathering. COLOR: Orange and white, liver and white, and black and white in clear or roan patterns. Some ticking is desirable. Tri-colors are allowed but not desirable, and should be faulted to their degree of variance. A tri-color us a liver and white dog with classic orange markings on eyebrows, muzzle, and cheeks, inside the ears and under the tail; freckles on the lower legs are orange.
