  • Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally Active and Alert, Sporting Dogs Make Likeable, Well-Rounded Companions
Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally active and alert, Sporting dogs make likeable, well-rounded companions. Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise. The breeds of the AKC Sporting Group were all developed to assist hunters of feathered game. These “sporting dogs” (also referred to as gundogs or bird dogs) are subdivided by function—that is, how they hunt. They are spaniels, pointers, setters, retrievers, and the European utility breeds. Of these, spaniels are generally considered the oldest. Early authorities divided the spaniels not by breed but by type: either water spaniels or land spaniels. The land spaniels came to be subdivided by size. The larger types were the “springing spaniel” and the “field spaniel,” and the smaller, which specialized on flushing woodcock, was known as a “cocking spaniel.” ~~How many breeds are in this group? 31~~ 1. American Water Spaniel a. Country of origin: USA (lake country of the upper Midwest) b. Original purpose: retrieve from skiff or canoes and work ground c. Other Names: N/A d. Very Brief History: European immigrants who settled near the great lakes depended on the region’s plentiful waterfowl for sustenance. The Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly-Coated Retriever, and the now extinct English Water Spaniel have been mentioned in histories as possible component breeds. e. Coat color/type: solid liver, brown or dark chocolate. A little white on toes and chest is permissible.

  • Futurity and Maturity Program Breeder and Owner Handbook
Futurity and Maturity Program Breeder and Owner Handbook 1 Weimaraner Club of America Rules, approved December, 2011. Revised May 12, 2021 Greetings, We hope you find the Weimaraner Club of America (WCA) Futurity and Maturity Program rewarding whether you are: An experienced breeder, A first time breeder, Just considering breeding, A new owner or A long time Weimaraner owner And, whether you are interested in field, bench or both. The Futurity and Maturity program is designed to encourage and reward the breeding of Weimaraners who most closely conform to the approved AKC breed standard and its intent. Such recognition is important to the breed for continued breed improvement. The program began in 1956 with a Field Futurity followed by a Bench Futurity program beginning in 1957. (Field events recognize dogs based on their ability to find, point and retrieve game, while bench events recognize dogs on their conformation.) The programs, with their rich history, were combined in 1985. In 2011 the WCA Board of Directors appointed a committee of knowledgeable and committed Weimaraner breeders and owners to take a critical look at the program and recommend changes needed to take the program into the future. This program is the result of the hard work of that dedicated committee. The program not only rewards the efforts of the breeder but also the owners who are responsible for fulfilling their Weimaraners’ unique potential. Recognition is also given to the sire for his genetic contribution to the breeding. The Futurity and Maturity program provides the breeder with the opportunity to nominate their litter which is a statement of faith for their breeding program.

Guidelines: Brittany Presentation Approved by the American Brittany Club 1. Introduction - Welcome the participants & introduce yourself. “Hello. Welcome to this presentation on the Brittany. This is a parent club approved presentation. My name is Diana Kubitz and I am the Judge’s Education Coordinator for the American Brittany Club. I am a breeder, owner and handler with 40 years at the “game” in show, field trial and hunt test arenas. GIVE FURTHER HISTORICAL INFO HERE …………. 2. Pass out attendance sheets & ask everyone to list their name, address, phone and e-mail. (Send this back to Diana Kubitz for her records and so she can submit to the AKC.) PLEASE REMIND ME TO PASS OUT CERTIFICATES AT THE END OF THE PRESENTATION. 3. Materials - Pass out the breed information packet, and tell them there will be plenty of time for them to review the information later. Telling them about the packet using the items below is optional: Point out that we do have an illustrated standard & it is included in the packet. Point out that the standard is also included as well as a guide to the process for judging a Brittany with comments by Dorothy Macdonald. Point out to them we have provided a grooming guide so they know that grooming outside the limits of this guide is really not what the breeders intend to have occur with the breed. Page 1 of 21 State that the other articles address topics of concern to breeders & are of importance for judges to understand. 4. Optional Point #4 - At this point, I usually pass out a photo of a quail, a chukar and a pheasant.
