Singh Division of Fruits and Horticultural Technology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi-110 012, India Received 21 September 2006; received in revised form 2 January 2007; accepted 7 January 2007 Available online 17 January 2007 Abstract Biotechnology can complement conventional breeding and expedite the mango improvement programmes. Studies involving in vitro culture and selection, micropropagation, embryo rescue, genetic transformation, marker-assisted characterization and DNA fingerprinting, etc. are underway at different centers worldwide. In vitro culture and somatic embryogenesis of several different genotypes have been achieved. The nucellus excised from immature fruitlets is the appropriate explant for induction of em- bryogenic cultures. High frequency somatic embryogenesis has been achieved in some genotypes; however, some abnormalities can occur during somatic embryo germination. Embryo rescue from young and dropped fruitlets can improve the hybridization success in a limited flowering season. Protocols for protoplast culture and regeneration have also been developed. In vitro selections for antibiotic tolerance and fungal toxin resistance have been very promising for germplasm screening. Genetic transformation using Agrobacterium tumefaciens has been reported. Genes that are involved with fruit ripening have been cloned and there have been attempts to deliver these genes into plants. DNA fingerprinting and studies on genetic diversity of mango cultivars and Mangifera species are also being conducted at several research stations. The purpose of this review is to focus upon contemporary information on biotechnological advances made in mango. It also describes some ways of overcoming the problems encountered during in vitro propagation of mango. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The first discovery of this phenomenon is credited to Leuwen hock as early as 1719 in Citrus seeds. In apomixes, seeds are formed but the embryos develop without fertilization. The genotype of the embryo and resulting plant will be the same as the seed parent. Definition: “The process of development of diploid embryos without fertilization.” Or “Apomixis is a form of asexual reproduction that occurs via seeds, in which embryos develop without fertilization.” Or “Apomixis is a type of reproduction in which sexual organs of related structures take part but seeds are formed without union of gametes.” In some species of plants, an embryo develops from the diploid cells of the seed and not as a result of fertilization between ovule and pollen. This type of reproduction is known as apomixis and the seedlings produced in this manner are known as apomicts. Apomictic seedlings are identical to mother plant and similar to plants raised by other vegetative means, because such plants have the same genetic make-up as that of the mother plant. Such seedlings are completely free from viruses. In apomictic species, sexual reproduction is either suppressed or absent. When sexual reproduction also occurs, the apomixes is termed as facultative apomixis. But when sexual reproduction is absent, it is referred to as obligate apomixis.

Accordingly plant density studies in mango was laid out in the year 1992 with spacing of 5 X 5 m, 5 X 10 m and 10 X 10 m, , in randomized block design at Ganeshkhind, Pune. The growth, yield and quality parameters were recorded for three years and pooled data (2010 -2012) was analyzed statistically. The results were signiicant and the yield and monetary returns were 125 per cent more over conventional spacing. The recommendation of planting of mango cv Kesar at spacing of 5 X 5 m with light pruning (15 – 20 cm terminal shoot) after harvest of fruits every year is recommended for higher fruit yield and monetary returns in mango growing area of Maharashtra. A sample of 60 mango farmers was taken purposively from various villages in taluka Tando Adam district Sanghar Sindh Pakistan. The objective was to work out benefit cost ratio and net present worth of growing mango orchard. The mango growers in study area on average per farm spent a sum of Rs. 38000.00. This included Rs. 6000.00 for loading, Rs. 16000.00 for transportation and Rs. 6000.00 of unloading respectively in the study area. The mango grower in the study area on average per acre spent a total cost of production of Rs. 203762.00 this included Rs.80000.00, Rs.28847.00, Rs.56915.00 and Rs.38000.00 on fixed cost, labour costs, Capital Inputs and marketing costs respectively in the study area.

PRITHWI GHOSH, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY, NARAJOLE RAJ COLLEGE Polyembryony [Introduction; Classification; Causes and applications] As per the name Polyembryony – it refers to the development of many embryos. • Occurrence of more than one embryo in a seed is called polyembryony. • When two or more than two embryos develop from a single fertilized egg, then this phenomenon is known as Polyembryony. • In the case of humans, it results in forming two identical twins. This phenomenon is found both in plants and animals. • The best example of Polyembryony in the animal kingdom is the nine-banded armadillo. It is a medium-sized mammal found in certain parts of America and this wild species gives birth to identical quadruplets. Polyembryony in Plants • The production of two or more than two embryos from a single seed or fertilized egg is termed as Polyembryony. • In plants, this phenomenon is caused either due to the fertilization of one or more than one embryonic sac or due to the origination of embryos outside of the embryonic sac. • This natural phenomenon was first discovered in the year 1719 by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in Citrus plant seeds.
