In the first session, Lotusland Research Associate Rose Thomas will discuss the history of the estate, dating back to the 1880s, and the life and work of Madame Ganna Walska. Next, Paul Mills, Curator of the Living Collection, will present a talk on the history of the collections, the importance of botanic ® gardens in plant conservation, and how the collections are curated. He will also discuss different threat levels to the plants as well as Lotusland’s collaborations with other botanic gardens worldwide. In the second session, Plant Health Care Manager Corey Welles will address the subject of Green Garden Strategies, including a discussion of the soil foodweb and how to garden sustainably. And in conclusion, Lotusland docents will lead a one-hour tour of the Gardens. Three docents who are also VISTAS members—Pat Sheppard, Michael DeRousse, and Sandy DeRousse—will be available to tailor tours to our participants’ physical abilities. She is uniquely qualified to present the history of the estate and the creation of the gardens. Paul Mills has spent more than twenty years on the curatorial staff of Lotusland and has made presentations on the importance of biodiversity and plant conservation at international conferences. Paul has travelled extensively in Latin America, including the Galapagos and Cuba, and recently spent time in South Africa studying its native plants. Corey Welles, Plant Health Care Manager, was involved in the early 1990s transition of Lotusland from conventional chemical-based methods of gardening to Green Garden Strategies. He has presented talks on creating sustainable methods to botanical gardens throughout the United States. Docents Pat Sheppard, Michael DeRousse, and Sandy DeRousse completed ten-week training courses and have led tours of Lotusland for many years for a wide variety of participants.
