This thesis explores how Sarah created herself as the author Hesba Stretton: choosing a pseudonym and subject areas that both revealed and concealed who she was; using the popularity of her works to negotiate with publishers for a living wage for herself and her sister; and parlaying her authorial fame to argue and organize for reform on social issues important to her. Utilizing the insights of feminist literary scholar Carolyn Heilbrun, Smith/Stetton’s life is reconstructed to consider the unique opportunities, decisions, contributions and consternations of her life. Her logbooks, travel diaries, short stories, novels and articles, as well as the public record of her involvement in social issues of the day, are the primary sources used for this biographical interpretation of her life. Feminist scholarship, historical and literary, is utilized to give context and critical consideration to Hesba Stretton’s life and work. Finally, in keeping with Heilbrun’s precept that biographies are fictions—constructions of the biographer of a story she needs to tell—brief self-reflective pieces are included. In each chapter the reader sees an aspect of Heilbrun’s theory explored, a time of Hesba Stretton’s life examined, and a connection to the biographer’s life elaborated. i Acknowledgements This thesis has been a long time in the making, not only because I am a ‘mature’ student but because it has been written while working full-time. On an August day in 2007 the shimmering heat of the prairie summer drove me to seek shelter. The few trees near the beach at Last Mountain Lake Bible Camp offered little protection from the blistering press of the sun’s rays. The aged beach house in which I was staying seemed stifling. Looking for an avenue of relief I made my way to the old quonset hut that housed the Methodist camp’s perennial garage sale. I entered the dim light of the building and took a shallow breath of the motionless air. Looking around I could see the detritus of the many households that had been offered for fundraising purposes. What could I purchase that would not simply add to the clutter of my own home? Always hopeful of an unexpected find, I headed to the books. Most were the usual summer reading fare—tattered mysteries and romances—but on the top shelves were some truly old books. I reached for the smallest one, a pale blue hardback entitled Under the Old Roof. The author named on the cover was Hesba Stretton and the publisher was listed as The Religious Tract Society; I had heard of neither. No publication date was given. Wondering how much I really wanted to read a story written for religious purposes many decades ago, I was about to put it back. Instead I turned one more page and came across the prefatory note. In it someone, presumably the author, had written, “This story was intended to illustrate the great injustice suffered by women prior to the passing of the Married Women’s Property Acts.”1 Immediately my perspective on the author and the book changed.     THE SPIRITUAL IMPACT OF THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY. A Preliminary Survey of the History of the Religious Tract Society, Founded in London, 1799, and of its Spiritual Impact. Introduction. Good quality literature has always been an important feature in the strength and propagation of heart-felt Christianity since the invention of printing in Europe, and there have been certain special times when literature has played an outstanding role in the life of the Church. For example, the impact of Martin Luther in Germany was greatly increased by the spread of his various writings, and especially by his translation of the New Testament in the vernacular. Professor Lindsay says that the “Reformation movement may almost be said to have created the German book trade.” 1 The number of books which were published in Germany before 1518 was very few, and they were not of any great importance. From 1518 to 1521 there was a sudden increase which was created by Luther almost alone, mainly in the form of sermons, tracts and controversial writings. After that he had many disciples, who also wrote and published, and the total figures increased steeply. Luther’s translation of the New Testament appeared in September, 1522. The translation had been completed in only eleven weeks. Other translations had previously been made by other people, all based upon Saint Jerome’s Latin Vulgate. But in 1516, Erasmus had published a Greek New Testament, and Luther used this, translating it into the official German of the Saxon chancery, rather than into his own colloquial Saxon dialect. In this way “he helped create a standard German for all Germany.” Five thousand copies were sold in two months, and two hundred thousand copies in twelve years.

Forgeries of bills of exchange, wills, parish registers or other documents were depicted in at least one hundred novels between 1846 and 1879. Many of these portrayals were inspired by celebrated real-life forgery cases. Forgeries are fictions, and Victorian fiction’s representations of forgery were often self- reflexive. Chapter one establishes the historical, legal and literary contexts for forgery in the Victorian period. Chapter two demonstrates how real-life forgers prompted Victorian fiction to explore its ambivalences about various conceptions of realist representation. Chapter three shows how real-life forgers enabled Victorian fiction to develop the genre of sensationalism. Chapter four investigates how real-life forgers influenced fiction’s questioning of its epistemological status in Victorian culture.

An expanding population and growing manufacturing drove development on any available space. Yet this same period saw the origins of a movement that would lead to the preservation and creation of green open spaces across the country. Beginning in 1865, social reforming groups sought to stop the sale and development of open spaces near metropolitan centres. Over the next thirty years, new national organisations worked to protect and develop a variety of open spaces around the country. In the process, participants challenged traditional land ownership, class obligations and gender roles. There has been very little scholarship examining the work of the open space organisations; nor has there been any previous analysis of the specific membership demographics of these important groups. This thesis documents and examines the four organisations that formed the heart of the open space movement (the Commons Preservation Society, the Kyrle Society, the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association and the National Trust). It demonstrates connections between philanthropy, gender and space that have not been explored previously.

In the nineteenth century, much of this debate was centred around teaching Christian religious practices, and connecting these practices back to moral lessons or social concerns. This thesis traces the changes in the way in which religious teachings are presented in children’s literature throughout the nineteenth century. I argue that the instructional elements of children’s literature do not become less significant over the period, but rather become implicit rather than explicit, and thus invite the implied child reader to make connections and judgements for him- or herself rather than merely accepting what the narrator is saying.
