Though we might not be on Broadway, theater in the Greater Capital District is alive and well. As I welcome you all to 42nd Street, our last show of the season, I write this letter with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It is hard to believe that we are completing our 92nd season, but I am thrilled with all that we have achieved this year and look forward to what season 93 has in store. A wonderful line up of shows, multiple sold out runs, great reviews, major renovations… these are just a few of the outstanding things that we have achieved this season, and I know we will continue this momentum into the future. As this will be my final President’s letter, I would be remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to highlight some of the wonderful things, we as an organization, have completed during my time as President, and thank my team that has made it possible. We’ve completed major renovations around our campus including replacing the roofs on both buildings, overhauling the backstage area and updating the connector hallway between the theater from the box office. We’ve made improvements to our courtyard and outdoor spaces and will continue to do so as the weather improves this spring. We are in the process of installing new floors in the education building to ensure the safety of our casts as they rehearse and our patrons for opening night parties and other functions. In the near future, the Board of Directors will be embarking on a campaign to replace our HVAC equipment as well as make improvements to our sound equipment. Our goal is to improve our sound to make each production more enjoyable for you as you return to SLOC. In addition to these physical renovations, we have developed a new website, expanded our digital media footprint, and welcomed a new marketing team. This has helped us grow our membership base, expand our volunteer database and enjoy record numbers of season subscribers. Many of our shows over the last two years have sold out and we continue to welcome new and returning audience members to our theater. Next season we are excited to announce that we are adding a Saturday matinee to the second weekend of all our main stage shows, due to the demands set by our growing audiences! Despite all these positive changes, there is still much more we need to achieve, and I know that the future leadership of this organization will make it a top priority to complete these goals. I want to thank everyone on my leadership team who has accomplished so much over the past two years. They have worked to build and grow their departments and their hard work shows! I can’t wait to see what happens next. As I finish my term as President, I am not saying goodbye. I will still be a part of the Board of Directors and will be on the production staff of several shows next season in addition to directing the season closer, Bright Star. I will continue to be at the theater watching new shows and seeing us grow and expand. I hope you share my sense of pride, as you are all a part of something alive and well, a part of the magic of the Capital District theater scene. Thank you and enjoy the show! Michael Camelo, President, Schenectady Light Opera Company 7 8 A Letter From The Director Welcome to the final production of the 2018-2019 season! This musical has been on my Director’s “bucket list” for several years and I am thrilled to be returning to SLOC to direct this show. The musical is based on the 1932 Bradford Ropes novel and the 1933 film of the same name. The film was choreographed by Busby Berkeley and starred Warner Baxter (Julian), Bebe Daniels (Dorothy), Dick Powell (Billy) and Ginger Rogers (Annie) and featured the film debut of Ruby Keeler in the role of Peggy Sawyer. An interesting anecdote about the original novel: the author depicted Julian and Billy as lovers. Same-sex relationships would not have gained approval from the Motion Picture Production Code’s censorship guidelines of that era, so the film substituted a relationship between Billy and Peggy. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture in 1933. The musical version of 42nd Street is relatively new, with the first production debuting on Broadway in 1980. This was a huge gamble for the Broadway producer David Merrick, as only one other show had made the transfer from original movie musical to the stage – Gigi. This backstage musical features the technique of a show-within-a-show and was choreographed by the legendary Gower Champion. The Opening Night of the show was tragically overshadowed by Champion’s death; he died hours before the show’s debut.

  • 42Nd St Synopsis Characters
42nd St Synopsis One of showbusiness's most classic and beloved tales, 42nd Street tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, a talented young performer with stars in her eyes who gets her big break on Broadway. Peggy arrives in New York City from her hometown of Allentown, Pennsylvania, armed with her tap shoes, her lucky yellow scarf and big dreams. Peggy’s talent catches the eye of legendary Broadway director Julian Marsh, who gives her a spot in the chorus of Pretty Lady, his newest show. Pretty Lady stars Dorothy Brock, the classic Broadway diva, who takes an instant dislike to the new girl in the cast. When Dorothy is injured during the show’s previews, Pretty Lady looks like it will have to close, unless a new girl talented enough to lead the show can be found — someone like Peggy Sawyer! Characters Age requirements are approximate, however the dance ensemble must look young. PEGGY SAWYER A young, starry-eyed, naïve, and humble chorus girl who assumes the Lead role in Pretty Lady when Dorothy breaks her ankle. She is the triple threat in the show - must sing, act, and dance (tap) very well. Alto-mezzo soprano: should belt and be able to easily transition to head voice. Age: 17-25 (must look young - character is referred to as ‘21’) DOROTHY BROCK A past-her-prime and well-known, Broadway diva. She is supposed to be the female lead in Pretty Lady because she is dating Abner who is paying for the show. While very selfish and mean to everyone at first, she comes to understand what’s really important in life after breaking her ankle and therefore unable to perform.
