Dissertation Advisor: Ian Jared Miller Sakura Marcelle Christmas The Cartographic Steppe: Mapping Environment and Ethnicity in Japan’s Imperial Borderlands ABSTRACT This dissertation traces one of the origins of the autonomous region system in the People’s Republic of China to the Japanese imperial project by focusing on Inner Mongolia in the 1930s. Here, Japanese technocrats demarcated the borderlands through categories of ethnicity and livelihood. At the center of this endeavor was the perceived problem of nomadic decline: the loss of the region’s deep history of transhumance to Chinese agricultural expansion and capitalist extraction. -

1 Field fungal diversity in freshly harvested japonica rice 2 3 4 5 ABSTRACT 6 Rice is a major food crop in China and Japonica rice production in Heilongjiang 7 Province ranks No.1 in total annual rice production in the country. Rice is prone to 8 invasion by fungi and mycotoxins produced by the fungi are proven to be serious 9 threats to human health. The objective of the present study was to investigate fungal 10 diversity of freshly harvested rice in the four main cultivation regions of Heilongjiang 11 Province in order to find the abundance difference of dominant fungi among the four 12 regions. Through high throughput sequencing we detected Ascomycota accounts for 13 absolute dominant phylum; Dothideomycetes, Sordariomycetes, Tremellomycetes, 14 Microbotryomycetes, and Eurotiomycetes were dominant classes; Capnodiales, 15 Hypocreales, and Pleosporales were the main orders; Cladosporiaceae, Pleosporaceae, 16 Nectriaceae, Clavicipitaceae, Tremellaceae, Phaeosphaeriaceae, 17 Trimorphomycetaceae, Sporidiobolaceae, Bionectriaceae, and Trichocomaceae were 18 major family; Cladosporium, Epicoccum, Fusarium, and Alternaria were the most 19 abundant phylotypes at genus level; Epicoccum_nigrum, Gibberella_zeae, and 20 Fusarium_proliferatum were the dominant fungal species. Great fungal diversity was 21 observed in the rice samples harvested in the four major Japonica rice-growing regions 22 in Heilongjiang province. However, no significant difference in diversity was observed 23 among the four regions, likely due to the relatively close geographical proximity 24 leading to very similar climatic conditions. Since some of the fungal species produce 25 mycotoxins, it is necessary to take precautions to ensure the rice is stored under safe 26 conditions to prevent the production of mycotoxins. -

Printed in Sweden by ESSELTE AB STOCKHOLM Foreword Forest Economy in the U.S.S.R. is a special study of the forestry sector of the Soviet economy. As such it makes a further contribution to the studies undertaken in recent years to elucidate the means and ends in Soviet planning; also it attempts to assess the competitive potentialities of the U.S.S.R. in international trade. Soviet studies now command a very great interest and are being undertaken at some twenty universities and research institutes mainly in the United States, the United Kingdoin and the German Federal Republic. However, it would seem that the study of the development of the forestry sector has riot received the detailed attention given to other fields. In any case, there have not been any analytical studies published to date elucidating fully the connection between forestry and the forest industries and the integration of both in the economy as a whole. Studies of specific sections have appeared from time to time, but I have no knowledge of any previous study which gives a complete picture of the Soviet forest economy and which could faci- litate the marketing policies of the western world, being undertaken at any university or college. -

Life-history traits and intra-cohort divergence of clearhead icefish (Protosalanx chinensis), indicating cannibalism increased fitness Fujiang Tang1, Wei Liu1, Jilong Wang1 and James Henne2 1 Heilongjiang River Fisheries Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Harbin, China 2 United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Bears Bluff National Fish Hatchery, Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina ABSTRACT Cannibalism is considered one of the causes of intra-cohort size divergence in fish and is usually believed to result in increased fitness in terms of survival and reproduction, but direct evidence of this is lacking. Population demographics of the clearhead icefish (Protosalanx chinensis) from Lake Xingkai (Khanka) were investigated for one year. Size-frequencies exhibited a bimodal distribution from July through January, where the population diverged into an upper and a lower modal group based on size. Stomach content analysis confirmed the occurrence of cannibalism, where fish belonging to the larger, upper modal group preyed upon those of the smaller, lower modal group. We found P. chinensis does not spawn until all of the oocytes have reached maturity and then a single spawning event occurs although the oocytes may develope asynchronously in the ovary. Upper modal group females matured slightly earlier than those of the lower modal group, and reproductive investment was considerably greater in the upper modal group than the lower modal group. The lower modal males made up the majority of the population after the spawning period, which meant they may have few opportunities to participate in reproduction. Therefore, piscivory and cannibalism of P. chinensis appears to have increased fitness of the fish belonging to the upper modal group and greatly reduced the fitness of those belonging to the lower modal group.
