Lord Viruscide 2018 Cheers Motherfucker “THE RED BEAR HAS AWOKEN - THE WORLD WILL FEEL HIS MIGHT.” Go Code for Soviet Forces in Eastern Europe to begin the Third World War. For decades the world had stood on the brink of a nuclear holocaust, a cataclysm of fire that threatened to doom the planet first by atomic flames, and then by the drawn out agony of nuclear winter. On August 4th 1985, these fears were alleviated, if only to replaced by a reality too dreadful for many NATO commanders to completmate. Operation Красная Заря (Red Dawn) the long anticipated, feared, and seemingly impossible Soviet Invasion of Europe. At just after 0500 hours Zulu time 56 combat divisions with over 13,000 tanks began their assault on NATO Positions guided and aided by advanced operations units that had slipped the wire on D-1. The Third World War had begun. August 4th brought other shocks. For years, the Western Powers had arrogantly assumed that they were unbeatable, that their technologies made them a match for Soviet fury. In this they were wrong as the Soviet unleashed its hordes of advanced tanks, APCs, Helicopters, artillery, and airplanes that they had jealously guarded safe from prying eyes. The Western Powers had underestimated the Soviet Union mostly out of a naivety that a war in the conventional sense would run the risk of triggering a nuclear war. However with the removal of American bases in Turkey, and their Pershing Missiles from West Germany the Soviet Union judged 1985 the year that it would bring down the whole of Europe, two initial strikes would plunge deep into the heart of the Capitalists of West Germany, then France, Holland, and Denmark would follow. The West’s naivety had run deep; many assumed that the Soviets were weak because of their poor showing in Afghanistan, forgetting that the land had earned the name ‘The Grave of Empires’ for a reason. More assumed that Soviet tanks were aging piles of scrap metal to fall like wheat before the scythe of their Leopards and Abrams. Again they were wrong, judging the performance of the equipment of Soviet Shock Armies by that of export grade tanks was comparable to judging a child with a box of crayons to a great master. They assumed that their air forces would come out ‘Top Gun’ against the Red Airforce and enjoy the same kind of air supremacy that their forefathers had enjoyed against the hated Fascists. This belief was again challenged against wave upon wave of MiGs. The Western Powers would pay for their arrogance dearly. Lord Viruscide 2018 Author’s Notes: Like many people and to the surprise of no one who has listened to me on Panzerfunk, I found the release of Battlefront's “RED THUNDER – Soviets in World War III” to be mildly disappointing at best and actually insulting at worst now with the release of “Stripes” and what has been teased at time of writing of “Free Nations”. There is simply no variety in the Warsaw Pact's forces. You'll take your spam and damn well like it Comradski. That at least is the attitude of Battlefront at present. So I was mad as hell and I wasn't going to take it anymore! Hence now, Team Tankie. Broadly there is a split in units, Northern armies expected to fight the British forces here labelled as “Shock Armies” are broadly FV but terrible in assault. I believe this should accurate represent their greater emphasis on tank-to-tank training that they received. Red Banner units are back with a vengeance. What always bothered me is that despite being ostensibly orientated to take the fight directly to the Capitalists in the Fulda Gap, Red Banner units suffered from a piss poor assault rating, this has been updated. Tanks have been a sore point, lots of circle jerking about invincible NATO tanks and superior products of the Motherland. The thing that sticks right in my craw is that the standard T-72A model as represented in Team Yankee, protected by composite armour has the same armour value as the Chieftain, an all steel tank from the late fifties. This has been fixed for free. Deal with it. Furthermore the lack of the historically represented ERA. Where possible pre-existing Battlefront rules have been drafted in, the aim was at least for me, to buff the Soviets to a historical standard without going completely overboard. So, you can now outfit your T-72As with ERA, Shock Armies, being better equipped receive ERA instead of BDD armour, and you can pay for Kontakt-5 ERA. Kontakt-5 was debated for a time, the initial draft just improved their armour across the board, this was abandoned as it made Soviet tanks beefier than NATO tanks quickly. Instead I have settled on representing it via a Ward Save. It's also pretty expensive on a per tank basis rather than a company basis. Although one tank mark gets it for free. The T-80U. Part of the disconnect between Battlefront, their fans and Reality is that Battlefront is prepared to go to the hilt for certain items outside of their timeframe, but deny anything that could be introduced in a few months of war build up. Typically this seems to affect NATO less than the Warsaw Pact, see the Sgt “FUCKING” York debacle, the new Canadian AA/AT vehicle and the fact that the 29 T-80Us ready in 1985 are not included in Red Thunder. Now they are in Team Tankie, good luck affording their services Comrade. 'Afghansty' got a really shitty rap from first their own Pamphlet and then Red Thunder. Out of all of the units represented in Team Yankee's timeframe, they are the only units to have seen active combat within the last ten-five years that was not a bunch of Argentines. Now they're mean as hell in assault, but their morale is in the toilet because they already got shot at for the Worker's Paradise. Veteran Hinds might be the most expensive things since Leopard 2s but I hope they're worth it. Division Recce Battalion is an odd formation, it's more of a 'Micro-Formation' it's designed to represent the extreme effort fellow Discord member Chrono informed me and then showed me in various documents the Soviets put into recon. Yeah, it's a tactical nuclear strike motherfuckaaaaas. The Havoc and the Hokum were both scheduled to enter service shortly after Team Yankee's timeframe of 1985. The fall of the Soviet Union led both of them to be released in the 2000s instead. Here we have assumed that similarly to ERA, T-80s and Krasnopol that the Soviets have made an effort to rush them into service since they were planning to go to war, and made the first strike. Sources are largely declassified CIA Documents, Ospreys and Official USA Army training manuals. Cheers. Every contingency, every counterattack, and every eventuality is planned for. While the Capitalists squabble amongst themselves, the Warsaw Pact’s unity shall crush them!
