Overview This revised and updated edition of the classic Cold War novel Team Yankee reminds us once again might have occurred had the United States and its Allies taken on the Russians in Team Yankee: World War III, had cooler geopolitical heads not prevailed. When Nazi Germany was destroyed, it was evident that Russian tank armies had become supreme in Europe, but only in counterpart to US air power. Likewise when the Russians overran Berlin they sent a signal to the Allies what their land armies could accomplish. Thankfully the tense standoff continued on either side of the Iron Curtain for nearly half a century. During those years, however, the Allies beefed up their ground capability, while the Soviets increased their air capability, even as the new jet and missile age began thanks much to captured German scientists on both sides. Team Yankee posits a conflict that never happened, but which very well might have, and for which both sides prepared for decades.

With the squadron commander’s Spartan burning furiously on the road next to the church and contact with regiment spotty due to jamming, Captain Moran realized it was up to him to decide when to break contact. They’d rehearsed doing this time and again during map exercises back in garrison. Yet even then, it had always been a tricky affair, with decisions based more on guesswork than a clear, concise assessment of the situation. Doing so under fire, with the Russians ready to pounce on them the second they realized the squadron was pulling out would be ‘interesting’. One mistake would be deadly. After a quick glance down at the map laid out on the roof of his Spartan, he decided 1 Troop would be the next to go. It was not only the most exposed, the lieutenant commanding it was, in his opinion, on the verge of cracking under the stress of probes by Russian infantry who were infesting the woods on the squadron’s left. If that troop was to stand any chance of escaping, 4 Troop’s Strikers would have to suppress the Russian tanks in the woods from its position in the village. “Right,” the 2IC murmured to himself under his breath. “Let’s see if we can make this…” The whine of incoming artillery caused the 2IC to drop down into the turret of his Scimitar, putting an end to both his mutterings and his preparations for the moment. Without turning away from the map, and motioning with his hand as he spoke, the general began to issue instructions to his operations officer. “Frank, get your plans people to work on an attack centered around the 21st Panzer Division. As soon as the French relieve it, I want the 21st to move here and attack north into the Thuringer Wald. The mission of the 21st is to breach the Soviet security screen and then cross the IZB here. The second phase of the operation will be to continue the attack north across the Saale River towards Leipzig.” The operations officer studied the map for a moment, then turned to the general. “Sir, can I plan on using the 25th Armored Division? Also, how far do you want us to plan ater we reach Leipzig?” “Use everything we’ve got. For planning purposes you will consider our axis of advance from where we are to Leipzig, Berlin, and finally the Baltic coast. I intend to go for broke. • Imagining the Third World War
206 Imagining the Third World War Discussions about NATO’s conventional defence in the 1970s Benedict von Bremen During the 1970s, military planners east and west of the “Iron Curtain” continued to prepare for a potential “hot” conflict between the two opposing military alliances, the Warsaw Treaty Organization and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Then-divided Germany – called the Central Region by NATO – would have been the main battleground of such a conflict. But how would that Third World War, and especially its conventional side, be fought? In NATO’s realm, this question not only occupied the thinking of military headquarters and national defence ministries, but also that of other military “experts.” The resulting often international textual discourse ranged from military doctrine to news- paper articles to future histories, that mirrored not only the change of strategy from “massive retaliation” to “flexible response” but also intra- alliance issues such as equitable sharing of the military burden and the influence of latest weapons technology on strategy and tactics. And while World War III between the Warsaw Pact and the Atlantic Alliance never materialized, both sides spent billions on materiel and stationed millions of soldiers in preparations for a war that never happened and that continues to stimulate imaginations of war up to this day. It is a sunny and quiet morning somewhere along the border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. All of a sudden, delta-winged MiG-21 fighter jets thunder overhead from east to west. Then, a platoon of Soviet T-62 tanks rumbles through an opening in the East German border defences and enters West German territory, followed by BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles.

Lord Viruscide 2018 Cheers Motherfucker “THE RED BEAR HAS AWOKEN - THE WORLD WILL FEEL HIS MIGHT.” Go Code for Soviet Forces in Eastern Europe to begin the Third World War. For decades the world had stood on the brink of a nuclear holocaust, a cataclysm of fire that threatened to doom the planet first by atomic flames, and then by the drawn out agony of nuclear winter. On August 4th 1985, these fears were alleviated, if only to replaced by a reality too dreadful for many NATO commanders to completmate. Operation Красная Заря (Red Dawn) the long anticipated, feared, and seemingly impossible Soviet Invasion of Europe. At just after 0500 hours Zulu time 56 combat divisions with over 13,000 tanks began their assault on NATO Positions guided and aided by advanced operations units that had slipped the wire on D-1. The Third World War had begun. August 4th brought other shocks. For years, the Western Powers had arrogantly assumed that they were unbeatable, that their technologies made them a match for Soviet fury. In this they were wrong as the Soviet unleashed its hordes of advanced tanks, APCs, Helicopters, artillery, and airplanes that they had jealously guarded safe from prying eyes. The Western Powers had underestimated the Soviet Union mostly out of a naivety that a war in the conventional sense would run the risk of triggering a nuclear war. However with the removal of American bases in Turkey, and their Pershing Missiles from West Germany the Soviet Union judged 1985 the year that it would bring down the whole of Europe, two initial strikes would plunge deep into the heart of the Capitalists of West Germany, then France, Holland, and Denmark would follow.
