ABSTRACT The aim of the present paper is to revise the distribution range of the invasive freshwater fish species, topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck and Schlegel, 1846) in Turkey, based on the literature review. After the first report of the species from the Meriç River in Thrace (European part of Turkey) in 1982, it has spread across the country mainly through human-mediated accidental introductions. The species has now been reported from 66 water bodies in total. Besides the introduction pathways, we also present chronological distribution pattern of the species. This information is useful especially for conservation endemic ichthyofauna due to the negative impact of Pseudorasbora parva, particularly through introducing an emerging infectious eukaryotic intracellular pathogen on the fungal-animal boundary, Sphaerothecum destruens Arkush et al., 2003.

This research was conducted within the frame- work of a multi-disciplinary bi-lateral project sup- ported by the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) and the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature-Japan (RIHN). A total of 8 subgroups conducted their research independently but in coordination of the ”Impact of Climate Change on Agricultural Production in Arid Areas” ICCAP. For several reasons, the Sey- han River Basin was selected as the pilot research area for the project. The water resources of the basin were studied by the International Research Center For Karst Water Resources (UKAM) of the Hacettepe University (Ankara) in cooperation with the DSI, University of Cukurova in Adana and Mustafa Kemal University in Antakya. The Seyhan River Basin, located at a semi-arid part of Turkey-having significant water and land resources potential- was selected as a pilot study area, to inspect the vulnerable components of wa- ter resources (surface water and groundwater) sys- tems, and define and quantify their vulnerabil- ity to climate change. The Seyhan River Basin (SRB), one of the major water resources basins in Turkey is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Figure 1.1 Geographical location and division of geographical region of Turkey (Figure 1.1).

Chapter 7 Orontes River Basin INVENTORY OF SHARED WATER RESOURCES IN WESTERN ASIA CHAPTER 7 - ORONTES RIVER BASIN Orontes River Basin EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Also known as the Assi River, the Orontes is the only perennial river in Western Asia that flows north and drains west into the Mediterranean Sea. Its flow regime shows typical winter peak flows due to increased precipitation, and summer low flows maintained exclusively by groundwater discharge. The river is mainly used for irrigation purposes with several agricultural projects planned in the three riparian countries. Water quality at the headwaters is generally good, but deteriorates in the middle and lower reaches of the river due to agricultural, urban and industrial activities. There is no basin-wide agreement between the three riparians, but there are several bilateral agreements in place on issues such as water allocation (Lebanon-Syria) and the joint The Dardara Falls on the Orontes in Lebanon, 2009. Peasnall and Guillermo Algaze* INTRODUCTION Since 2002, the DiyarbakÕr Small Streams Archaeological Survey Project has worked to record archaeological sites in the piedmont region of the Upper Tigris Drainage Area just east of the city of DiyarbakÕr, north of the Tigris River, and west of the city of Batman and the Batman River (Peasnall 2003) (Fig. 1). The project is ongoing, and to date 108 sites have been recorded within the survey area. Unquestionably, one of the most important of these is the ancient settlement of Pir Hüseyin, situated some 25 km east of DiyarbakÕr on a high terrace overlooking the floodplain of the Ambar Çay, a minor perennial tributary of the Tigris. Pir Hüseyin has long been a focus of scholarly attention as the putative location where a justly famous stele of the Akkadian king Naram Sin was unearthed sometime in the last decade of the 19th century (below). Surprisingly, however, the mound had never been systematically surveyed, mapped, and collected until members of the DiyarbakÕr Small Streams Archaeological Survey Project did so in 2004.1 What follows is a report on that work focusing on the setting of the site, its nature, chronology, and significance. RESEARCH BACKGROUND In 1892, Natik Effendi, a lawyer from DiyarbakÕr whose work often took him to villages in the vicinity of that city, visited the house of a local landowner and noticed a broken stone stele that had been incorporated into the retaining wall of a well.
